Heard the extremely sad news while I was out of the country. Still totally shocked. It was just last year that we had a very pleasant dinner together in Ottawa. As always, we shared so much laughter together that evening. By the time I said good-bye to him, I was telling myself that I would go to see him shortly. How could I believe that good-bye is the last one? I've always been telling my students how much we the students loved him during our own graduate studies at McGill. He is a tremendous mentor for my career and life. I'll forever miss you Mark....Xuguang

Dear Mark, it is time to say good-bye. Thank you for your passion.....your passion for the science of drug discovery and the mechanisms of HIV drug resistance. Your passion for the people....all those many students who passed through your lab and of course your compassion for those populations most impacted by the scourge of HIV. The spark that you lit in Durban in 2000, truly changed the world for the better as now millions are accessing a future made possible by having access to ARVs. Mark, you were passionate about your country and the province of Quebec. You were truly a great Canadian statesman. And so Mark, it is time to say goodbye until we meet again in a better place for a wee dram of the good stuff. Much love, Matthew Steele

Susan, Jonathan, Zev, it took me 10 days to bring myself to finally write something about Mark. I am heartbroken and devastated by his passing, he was more than just a world renown scientist to me, he was a good neighbor, a man who never shied away from giving me advice, solicited or not and above all, a true mensch. Just about seven years ago, my father was diagnosed with cancer. It was Mark that didn't miss a Shabbos visit, a kind word and encouragement. Mark came by after shul, before shul, whenever he could, just to talk to my dad, just to comfort him. Last year, when my dad contracted his final illness, Mark was on the forefront, pushing my dad's doctors to come up with some way to save his life. He was a constant visitor, phone caller and advocate. His contribution to try and better my dad's condition will never be forgotten and Mark holds a special place in mine and my family's heart. Outside of health, Mark was always interested in what I was doing. He would ask me continuously to guest on my radio show (which he did once). When I ran for city council (twice), he was there, offering advice, after the final loss, his advice was "Howie, don't run again, it's obvious they don't want you." Then he winked and gave me that sly smile of his. When I heard about his tragic end, I was shell shocked. I couldn't believe it. Not Mark, not so soon after my dad... I know he touched a lot of people in his life, but I just wanted to let you know that I was one of them. My heart goes out to your family and may his memory be an everlasting blessing upon you, your families and all you do.

I was shocked and heartbroken at the sad news. Mark was bigger than life. He was the complete package - outstanding and passionate about his science, world-beating humanist who thought and acted on his beliefs no matter the politics, as well as warm, funny and engaged completely with whoever he was with. He was a wonderful human being to have known and I feel privileged that I had such an opportunity.

Dear Susan, Zev, Jonathan and families, my deepest and most heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of an extraordinary man, dear friend, and most of all your dear husband and father. I was privileged to have known Mark and to have shared many laughs and joys with him as he was always so endearing , supportive and won you over every time with his most disarming smile. His brilliance and tenacious spirit is a huge loss to all mankind, but I know for you his loss is far greater and I only pray that his adoration and commitment to his family will sustain you during this most difficult of times as no words can possibly convey the loss of such a giant of a man. May you find peace and strength in your memories as you carry on his legacy.

I always thought that the Good Lord protected persons of distinction, people who provided for the good of humanity. To take away an asset to the community, to science, to the nation is deplorable and unjust. I guess good people get a number and when it's up, you are removed no matter what performance you achieved for progress and humanity. Condolences to all who have had the pleasure of being in his company.

It is difficult for me to express the profound shock, disbelief, and sadness that I felt upon hearing of Dr. Wainberg’s death. I am a new member of his lab, but I instantly felt welcome. I have followed his work for many years. Growing up in Montreal, I would read about his fearless and passionate fight against HIV, and for the rights of the poor, the voiceless, the powerless, and the forgotten. I knew then that he was one of the greats, and he forever will be. I thought, wouldn’t it be literally wonderful if one day he would accept me into his lab so that I could fight alongside him. What an honor I now feel to have lived that dream, if only for a short time. Yet, I still learned so much from him. Working with him was better than I had dreamt. I will miss him dearly. My hope now is that the Wainberg family will find some comfort in these words that will inevitably fall short of the true measure of respect and admiration that I harbor for a person who has done so much for humanity. Thank you Dr. Mark A. Wainberg and family. My deepest condolences. Sincerely, Mark Goring.

Words are inadequate to describe the profound sadness we feel at the tragic loss of Mark. I first met Mark some 35 years ago at the Montreal Children's Hospital where his infectious smile, good humor and vibrant energy illuminated the hallways. He became a leading scientific figure and worked passionately to bring cutting-edge science from the bench, not only to the bedside but to high-level policy makers. He made the world a better place. His compassion and comittment to social justice , and his deeply ethical character were an inspiration to us all. Mark's rare combination of humility, positivity and acceptance of others drew so many people into his life. Despite the numerous prestigious honors and awards he received throughout his career, whenever we would meet all he wanted to talk about was validating my work - such humility is rare. May the memory of Mark's spirit and expansive heart be a blessing to all who had the privilege to know and love him.

This is a terrible tragedy that saddens all of us. Mark was a remarkable researcher and a bold world leader in searching for successful HIV/AIDS treatments and prevention. All of the community will miss him sorely.

My condolences to the family and to the HIV community. It is always hard when someone leaves us but especially hard when it is someone we can always count on, for the truth and always advocating for those who are not heard by society. I was shocked and in disbelief when I heard on the news that he had passed tragically as I had seen him at CAHR a few days ago. As usual, always putting a smile on the face of the audience, joking about his age and not even thinking of retiring. He was one of a kind and all who knew him are sad, and those who didn't know of him, well all I could tell you is that you missed out. He has guided so many researchers through his career, and even though he is no longer with us, his genius will still be alive and continue to help people through the pearls of wisdom that he has planted in his students. As a member of the community since the 80's, I can tell you that we have had friends and foes in the research community. Some have gone from foes to friends but Wainberg has always been one of our soldiers in this battle against HIV. We have won many battles with HIV thanks to remarkable people like Mark. It's thanks to them that we are still alive and fighting to win the war. Thanks Mark, for treating me as an equal and teaching me so much, your genuine smile will always be in my head when I think of you. Jose Sousa

My heartfelt condolences to Mark’s family. Mark was beyond generous with his advice, encouragement and support on my path in HIV science and medicine, and I will be forever grateful. It is impossible to convey in words the tremendous void left by his absence. His enthusiasm could only be described as childlike and his mischievous smile and humor only added to his youthful aura. His passion for science could only be eclipsed by his kind heart and generous spirit. The magnitude and breadth of his contributions, both in science and advocacy, and his mission to make this an AIDS-free world will impel us all to keep up the struggle. Nothing would make Mark happier than knowing that his friendship and mentorship inspired others to make the world a better place.

I would like to extend my condolences to Dr. Wainberg's family. He was one of the most riveting and inspirational speakers we had as microbiology undergrads at McGill University - and one of the few who received standing ovations for many of his lectures. The tragic news of Dr Mark Wainberg’s death has greatly saddened all of us who knew him. Mark and I worked together as the Co-Chairs of the first International Microbicide Conference in Washington DC in 2000. Mark was an outstanding scientist and clinician, who in the course of his career made scientific breakthroughs while also being a vocal supporter of the human rights of those living with HIV. Mark was known and respected across the global HIV community as a warm human being with a ready smile and sense of humour - someone who it was always a pleasure to see and to talk to in the many shared meetings that we attended over the years. I was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Dr. Mark Wainberg's passing. … As our supervisor, not only is he highly demanding and strict to his student, also is very kind and generous. We all know his “barking is bigger than his bite”. I still clearly remember the financial assistance he gave to me twenty years ago when I really needed it. I also cannot forget the trust he had on me: when I was leaving his lab and went to his office to return my lab key, he said to me “Zhuo Li, you do not need to return the key, you can keep it. You are welcome to come back any time. If you do not like your job, you can come back and the key will be still useful”. What a kind and affectionate man! This key has become a very precious souvenir to me now. A gift I shall keep forever. A life is taken too soon… You will be always remembered and missed! Zhuo Li

I would like to offer my condolences to the Wainberg family. The first time I met Mark was in the early days of his work at the LDI. I met with he and his staff working on guidelines for universal infection precautions for daycare centres providing services to HIV+ children in Québec. I had the good fortune to attend the conference in Durban for which I know he played a key role. It was a time of exciting protential and promise. I was present in Toronto to hear his empassioned plea for access to life saving medicines. I read the short article he coauthored which was a visionnary piece foreseeing the potential of antiviral medicine as prevention and had the good fortune many years later to play a minor role collaborating with him in a study that ultimately proved that concept to be true. He was gregarious, social, jovial and would take time to step away from his research and the spotlight to give talks to small crowds of patients, activists and students in dusty old buildings in Montréal. He made the world a better place and our lives were enriched by his presence.

Dear Susan, Zev, Jonathan and Family There are no words to describe the shock, sadness and terrible sense of loss in learning the tragic passing of Mark. Mark has influenced the lives of so many people. He was a great friend to me when I arrived in Montreal in 1975 and gave me the opportunity to work in his lab. Later, I was lucky to have him as a mentor in my PhD studies. I will always remember his enthousiasm and passion when he was lecturing to students and fellow researchers. He was a witness to my wedding and I will always cherish his signature on our Ketoubah. His legacy will live forever.

Dear Susan and family, There are no words to describe the deep sorrow we all share with you at this time. Not only was Mark a devoted family man, but he had love enough to devote his life's work to those who had few advocates to their cause. He brought them hope, life and dignity and made all of our lives richer and more meaningful. Your loss is shared by all of us world wide and we thank you for being the loving and supportive family you were, making possible his wonderful work. May we all be able to be there for you now and help you through this most terrible and sudden loss.

My sincere condolences to Susan and the entire Wainberg family. What a sudden, tragic and heart-breaking loss to family, friends, colleagues all around the world. Mark has been my mentor and friend for thirty years - as with many other students and colleagues, he was always a supportive, generous and helpful mensch. Full of practical advice - sometimes spoken with such force and volume, that you had to sit up and take notice! Usually followed by that wide smile that said - take me seriously, but not that seriously. Over the past days, I realized that I still pass Mark's practical advice on to my students and fellows. We last met in Florida when he visited my condo - we compared our real estate purchases, caught up on science and life. He was more relaxed and happy than I had seen him in a long time - he loved his research life and was passionate about advocacy. One of his comments from another time echoes in my ears today - he said "Life's not fair, John - you know that". Sadly true. Mark, we will miss your unwaivering support and friendship. You will always be with us. John Hiscott - Rome Italy

My heartfelt condolences to the Wainberg family. Mark was very dear to me and always an inspiration-- as scientist, as a mentor, as an advocate and, most of all, as a human being . Very early on in my career he showed such generosity and support and remained a cherished colleague over the years. He always had time for people no matter who they were. His humour and passion were infectious and his passing leaves a tremendous void in the HIV/AIDS research community in Montreal and globally. Mark leaves a tremendous legacy that will continue to have impact and propel us to strive for a world without AIDS.

Our deepest condolences to the Wainberg family. Mark's passing is a great loss for all of us, but he has left a legacy that will live on. When we worked together with Mark and Jerry Coovadia on the AIDS 2000 conference in Durban, little did we know how much it would change the world and it continues to do so. : As soon as I started my career in HIV in Canada, Mark was one of my most precious collaborator , an unbiased advisor who taught me how to navigate through the meanders of the politics of Canadian science , a fan and a friend for 30 years. Mark made important and seminal contributions to everything he got involved in from science to mentorship to the politics of science and the politics of patient care nationally and internationally. Mark was the most forceful advocate of HIV research in Canada. Thanks to his constant efforts several of us had constant funding and were able to contribute to science. His battles with the different levels of government were epic and always made a positive difference. Mark was an incredible and generous mentor with very successful scientists coming out of his lab. Mark was a tireless advocate of French in science. This won him the respect of all levels of the Quebec society; from broken French 25 years ago to fully fluent Francophone, this testifies to Mark’s genuine efforts to do good and be good Mark, we will dearly miss you as a friend as a colleague and as an advocate . Tu continueras a nous inspirer

A tzadik, a mensch of the highest order, brilliant, a teacher and if truth be told, if he hadn't risen in the ranks to the most accomplished levels of science achievement, could have had another equally famous and influential career as a Catskills comedian for which I will also miss him deeply

Mark gave so much to so many. He was a brilliant scientist with acute political acumen, a warm heart and friendly and generous spirit. He was a friend to CATIE, providing pro bono expert review on numerous occasions and graciously wrote the foreword to our book " Managing Your Health" for people living with HIV. His loss will have a profound impact on the HIV community and our hearts go out to his family and close colleagues.

I was an AIDS research colleague of Mark's for many years, and have been deeply saddened by the news of his death. Mark was a much loved and widely respected member of our research community. He contributed so much as a scientist who ran an effective research program, but he was more than that - he was a true leader in the politics of the field, both within Canada and globally as a key member of the International AIDS Society. Mark always fought for social justice, human rights and the needs of those infected by HIV. He did this out of a well developed and innate sense of "what's the right thing to do". He spoke out when many were silent; was active when all too many were passive; worked tirelessly when so many others did very little. These are the hallmarks of a man who contributed so much to so many, and did so all his professional life. Mark, you will be missed but you will always be remembered.

As an active member of our community, past president of TBDJ synagogue and a volunteer in so many endeavours he will be remembered fondly, with the greatest admiration but most importantly as a regular guy who was totally involved in the conversation of the moment, interested, compassionate and encouraging the person with whom he was speaking. Dear Wainberg family, as you already know by evidence of the many condolences for Mark, that he has left a mark on many people. I remember him from his days on the second floor of the LDI prior to his lab's expansion. He was extremely generous with his time and lab to answer questions. Later as he became more successful, he never forgot a friend, and would welcome you with his trademark huge smile. He supported many researchers at the LDI, and was by definition a true mensch. May his memories provide you with some comfort during these difficult times.

Dear Susan, There is no adequate way to express our pain and sorrow at the tragic and premature loss of a dear friend and a truly exceptional person. So many messages of condolence have already been posted here and everyone shares in the intense feeling of bereavement and loss that shocks our whole community. One of Mark's many wonderful attributes was that he made each and every one of us feel special, that he cared for all of his many friends on a very personal and deep level. Mark and I shared a birthday - coming up soon - and we always tried to get together to have a l'chaim, whether it was in shul or one of our homes! We wish you, Zev , Jonathan and the grandchildren the consolation of knowing that your lives were blessed by sharing it with this truly brilliant, kind, and unique individual. Yehi Zichro Baruch.

Dear Susan, Zev and Jonathan. We are all stunned and feeling an enormous void. I honestly can't bend my mind around it, I can't imagine no longer seeing Mark in shul, discussing our mutual academic lives and hassles, sharing a scotch with him, emailing for advice etc. How much more (1,000-fold, 1,000,000-fold?) more difficult must it be for you. The beautiful toughts expressed by others on this site convey Mark's incredible qualities. I can't really add anything, except to say that our thoughts are with you. Mark's loss is much more than can be put into words. We just have to go on now with memories of him and his outstanding example to inspire us. Stan

I've been extremely shocked and very sad when learning that Mark died so suddenly. I've just seen him last week at the CAHR conference in Montreal and he was so lively as usual. Mark has been a model and mentor for me: he put his confidence in my skills when he supported me as founding member of the board of CAHR of which he was the first president. He also provided me several letters of reference during my career. We were comrades in the fight against HIV/AIDS and I will never forget him. My sincere condolences to all his family.

He remembered our names when we met, and even knew about big events in our scientific lives, like the papers we'd published. Dr. Wainberg was my supervisor for five years, and I am forever grateful for those five years under the supervision of such a great mentor and inspiration. I have never witnessed such a hardworking, successful, humble and truly genuine man. He treated everyone with such genuine compassion and showed such support for us his trainees that it was easy to fall in love with Mark Wainberg the man, and the champion of all. His scientific insight was so uncanny, that I am constantly in awe of it and I will forever be in the thrall of Dr. Wainberg the scientist and thinker.
