I just watched a wonderful ceremony of the life of Victor David that was 101 years in the making. He was eulogized showing his accomplishments and humanity. Jackie, your stories about Victor and Ruth’s relationship to your parents were touching and poignant. I am a newcomer to Victor’s long life but got to know him on a hiking trip we took to Nova Scotia when he was a spry 93 years old. I learned about the Holocaust from his harrowing personal account of his tribulations. I learned and saw how he was able to handle situations that required a battery of life skills. When I tried to stop Victor from walking on slippery rocks on the trail, Victor followed his own course (of course). When I mistakenly passed a Canadian border checkpoint, Victor charmed the Mounties that caught us, but when the Mounties discovered the beer that Victor loaded in the car’s trunk, I also needed to perform a sobriety test. When a guy in a hotel room above us made so much noise Victor couldn’t sleep. With Victor leading, we went to his room. Victor knocked on his door so ferociously, the guy was afraid to answer the door but wise enough to quiet down. When Italian tourists got lost, my legally blind new friend showed them the way speaking in fluent Italian. Victor, the people you touched and I will truly remember and miss you. And one last bit of advice – When you get to your new neighborhood, take some time to look around before you shake up the place.

I am grateful for having a remarkable journey of over 40 years as a close friend as a son to Victor and Ruth David. I would like to thank my family Pia,Dev,Shakti Sumbly,friends Alex Arabian,Max Polster,Sandra Prenski,Henry Waksman,his wife for being always there for him. Dear Family Members, Dear Hanna, We offer our deep condolences on the loss of a special man. We were fortunate know him for many years. Victor was intelligent, interesting, kind, generous and had a wry sense of humour. He survived the tragedy of the Holocaust and all the losses that entailed, and lived a good and successful life. May your memories of him be passed on for generations. The Montreal Holocaust Museum will certainly share his story. Hanna, I am glad you were there to hold his hand. I know he appreciated your presence, respect and caring.
