Mr. Goldberg changed my life with his friendly, approachable teaching style at Outremont High and his always positive encouragement. We shared a lot of laughs but I'll always remember that he taught me how to take good, concise quality notes, a skill which i eagerly passed on to my own dear students at Herzliah High School during my own 35 year career as their History teacher, a career that was molded by my sweet mentor, Mr. Goldberg. Teachers DO make a difference and his precious students were indeed fortunate to learn from him and to benefit from his sincere guidance and care. A job very well done, Sam.

I was also one of Sam's students at Outremont High and, more recently, one of his Thursday lunch companions. In grade 9 in 1963 he was my homeroom teacher and he also taught us history. He was responsible for peaking by lifelong interest in history and politics. I still remember his heated discussions in class with Gary W. and André R.. I offer my deepest sympathy to his family. Dear Fraide and Family: I was shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Sam. We met and "carpooled" to and from Macdonald's Teachers College some 57 years ago, and have maintained a collegial relationship throughout the ensuing years. I always admired Sam's thirst for knowledge, his eclectic expertise in a variety of intellectual areas, his political acumen, his analytical mind, his droll sense of humor and his acerbic wit. Having lunch with Sam only a week ago, only reinforced what a terrible loss for an esteemed colleague. May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life. Rest in peace, Sam.

Dear Goldberg family, My sincerest condolences on the Sam's passing. I was one of the Outremont 'gang', a former student at OHS, in the '60's. We were so appreciative of many of his qualities: teacher, friend, confidant, raconteur. He embellished our weekly lunch bunch conversations and he really added a different perspective to life in general. He will be dearly missed.

Having sent Sam a copy of my presentation at our Kamloops (BC) small Havdala for the Pittsburgh tragedy on Tuesday the 30th October, I was surprised that no reply came the next day, or Thursday or Friday...as he was always interested in my publications and presentations. Then, Saturday, came the news of his passing via a fellow classmate and long time friend at Outremont High. It was sad news and I can only hope that his passing was without pain. I last met Sam in 2013 on one of my infrequent visits to Montreal: we had a leisurely lunch, reminiscing about Outremont, my detentions, his teaching me in 3 subjects etc. But what impressed me the most was his sustained intellectual interest and strong opinions about world issues, especially development in poorer countries, which has been my prime involvement. We were planning a family visit to Montreal and certainly Sam would have been on our agenda for a fresh debate. The Jewish community, the education sector and , of course his family and friends inevitably miss a very good person. May he rest in peace and may the fallen leaves of Autumn enrich our soil and our lives. To his family, I express my sincere condolences.

Dear Marci, Randi, Fraidie and Yossi. We are sorry for your loss. Sam and I go back many years. We first were together in Mount Royal elementary school where we were in the same class with Miss Mildred Levy. We proceeded on to Baron Byng High School where we were in the same class Grades 8-11 starting with Mr Bent and ending with Mr Cameron. We met again as teachers in Outremont High where Sammy as a disciplined teacher was given the weakest class who by year end resulted in the highest marks for that grade. Sammy, upon retirement,ar took of concerts, theatre, and many a lecture and conference. He took on the role of devil's advocate asking questions of the various lecturers, many of whom were very appreciative of his challenges. Sammy and I continued to connect 2-3 times per year by phone, minimum conversation of one hour. He left the world a better place. He will be missed. Bernard Shoub
