Dear Rosalie, Laurel, Elliot and family, Our deepest sympathy on your loss. We have many wonderful memories of you and Dr. Phil when we were neighbors for a few years when we were growing up. He was funny, generous with his time, and supportive of us. Dr. Phil also was an important doctor to our Mom and other relatives, providing care, empathy and hope both inside and outside the operating room. You are in in our hearts and prayers during this difficult time.

Shirley Katz & Norman Just - 2 days ago

Dear Rosalie, We moved from Montreal over 20 years ago. While practising family medicine in Toronto I often wished I could have someone as accessible for my patients as Dr Gordon had been. He was one of the most competent, caring physicians we knew. He was a great teacher with a wonderful sense of humour. When our first child was born 38 years ago, you and Phil sent her a gift. I joked in my thank you note that it was a lovely gift but I was surprised it was not a “potty.” We could joke with Phil. I once introduced him as the speaker at a medical event. I stated that “Sometimes a sigmoidoscope is described as an instrument with an a—hole at both ends. However with Dr Gordon this was not the case at all.” Of course he laughed. Even when he journeyed as a patient he was still committed to helping as he continued to teach us with humility. What a mench. We will continue to miss him. Shirley Katz and Norman Just

Noah Kochman - 10 days ago

Dear Rosalie and family: In reading all of the comments and condolences on this page, it is easy to see that our family's connection to Dr. Gordon is only one of so many. However, for the Kochman and Moldovan families, Dr. Gordon is the man who brought hope back into our lives. His skill and confidence saved my mother's life. His wry sense of humour put all of us at ease during our visits to him. And his selflessness was most apparent on his visits to check-in on our grandfather. Thank you for sharing Dr. Gordon with us. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Rosalie, Laurel and Elliot, You and Phil have been the best back door neighbours. Phil was our inspiration protecting our quality of life in our community. We will always remember his wonderful smile and his dry sense of humour. He was a great doctor for Stephen and me. We watched the midnight oil burning in his home office when he wrote the colon-rectal textbook that is used in all medical schools. It was a thrill to see that book completed, knowing we would all be beneficiaries. It was a joy to watch the closeness you shared... which makes his loss so much greater. He was such a trouper during this last struggle and he had the best support system in you. We will all miss him greatly. XO Lillian

Dear Rosalie--l first met Phil when he took care of my mother Carol. I will never forget how he went beyond the call in ensuring her comfort and giving her hope in even the most dire of circumstances. He also took care of me for years after and did the impossible by making every visit a--believe it or not--enjoyable experience. I will miss his annual late May phone call, our tradition of going over the Just For Laughs Festival lineup to decide what shows he was going to take you to (which always included The Nasty Show!). He was a great doctor and a great man and was one of the few people on earth who could actually make me laugh.

Sending heartfelt condolences to the Gordon family on the passing of a great man, taken way too soon. In addition to his professional accomplishments and talent, he cared so much about family, took time out for people & also had the greatest sense of humour. His recent article about this journey was a true inspiration to all. I feel privileged to have collaborated on a variety of projects with Phil that centred around his love of comedy. Of course we will be forever indebted to him for Bowser & Blue's greatest hit "Working Where The Sun Don't Shine". He will be very missed. May you try & take some comfort at this very difficult time in all of your wonderful memories as well as everyone else's tributes.

Ari Gross - 11 days ago

In the early 90s Phil gave my grandfather (Bernie Gross), whose cancer was caught much, much too late, another couple of years. I don't think I ever truly thanked him for that (although I know my parents certainly did). Years later, as an adult, when I finally met Phil I was amazed by his jovial personality. Its incredible and inspiring to have known someone who was such a focused, serious live-saver while also being (to my mind) a loveable goof who lived to laugh. On that note, my thoughts turn to "The Colorectal Surgeon Song" by Bowers & Blue, commissioned by Dr. Gordon himself: "Some may think the cardiologist is their best friend But the colorectal surgeon knows… he’ll get you in the end!"

Serge & Claudine Kay - 11 days ago

Dear Rosalie, Laurel and Elliot: Words fail to express our profound sadness on hearing of the loss of your dear husband and father, Phil. Phil and I started our careers at the JGH together 45 years ago and in a department of great surgeons, he was the greatest of them all. He had a stellar career, personally founding colorectal surgery as a speciality in Canada, authoring a textbook, training two generations of colorectal surgeons and adding years to the lives of countless patients by his skilled and dedicated care. He was not only a colleague but a very good friend and above all, a mentch, who gave his all to anyone who came to him for his help. I am sorry that we are presently in Florida and unable to be with you personally to honour his memory. May you be comforted by the knowledge that he accomplished so many good deeds in his life and may his memory always be an inspiration and a blessing. Rachel and Issie

Mike Flinker - 11 days ago

On November 18,1995 Dr. Gordon operated on my late mother Florence for colon cancer. Not only did he save her life, but because of him, she was able to live another 14 productive years. During those 14 years she got to witness the birth of three more grandchildren and she had the pleasure of watching her four grandchildren grow up and mature. Dr. Gordon was not only an incredible surgeon but an amazing man. He made sure to visit my Mom twice a day while she was recuperating in the hospital from her surgery and she found those visits exceptionally motivating. For years, following every successful post cancer examination, my Mom would immediately bake mandel bread for him, which she insisted had to be delivered to his office while they were hot. As a matter of fact, one time I even had to deliver them in a wicked blizzard. When I got to the hospital I found Dr .Gordon in his office, and he asked me" what are you doing in the hospital today, it's a blizzard?" I said the other day my Mom had another successful post cancer examination and she insisted I deliver the mandel bread which she had just baked ASAP because they taste much better when they're hot. He had repeated what he had said "it's a blizzard outside" and I said I'd still rather deliver the mandel bread in a blizzard than face my Mom's wrath. For my Mom's 80th birthday she insisted that we do something special for Dr. Gordon, so my bother Howard and I, ended up purchasing a colonoscope for the JGH so that Dr. Gordon could examine more patients with the ultimate goal of saving more lives. We got a gift of an additional 14 fantastic years with our Mom because of what he accomplished and because of that brother and I will be forever indebted to Dr. Gordon. I want to express my heartfelt sympathies to the entire family. May your family be spared any further sorrow.

Cookie Fenster Stren - 12 days ago

The last line of the obituary says it all about the remarkable Dr. Phil Gordon: "Phil made a difference in the lives of so many." Not only a brilliant surgeon, but a real mensch! When my mom, Sabina Sally Fenster, who went to Dr. Gordon for check-ups for many years, was an in-patient at the JGH during the last months of her life, Dr. Gordon was a remarkable and caring advocate for her. Early every morning, he would come by her room and check in on her. He "motivated" (actually, serious convincing was generally required on this busy ward!) the nurses to be kinder and more attentive to her. I arrived at the hospital at around 6:30 am daily, for our early morning discussions of my mom's status. I cannot begin to describe the considerable physical and emotional benefits these acts of kindness had on both my mother and myself. Despite his overwhelmingly busy schedule, he made time for so many acts of kindness and caring. The compassion of this man for every human being, and his strong desire to help make everyone's life better and easier shone through in everything he did. I have tears in my eyes as I write this. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the world on the loss of this truly exemplary human being who truly did make a difference in the lives of so many. He will be missed.

I was moved to tears yesterday when I heard that my doctor, Phil Gordon had passed away. He performed 7surgeries on me,, 6 over the course of 2 years. That was 26 years ago when I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. When my husband took me to the mayo clinic for a second opinion, they asked me who my doctor was in Montreal. When I told them Phil Gordon, they wanted to know what I was doing there, that I had the best doctor in North America. The last surgery was about 8 years ago when I put a note on his desk explaining that I couldn’t take another day of suffering. He miraculously performed surgery on me 8 days later. I owe him (along with a few others) my life. I only hoped he would have the same luck I did, however it was not to be. Thank you Dr Gordon. May you Rest In Peace.

Dear Gordon family, I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Philip Gordon. He was an incredibly brilliant yet humble man....a great doctor. My late mother and uncle (Sternberg family) knew Philip and his late Mom from Saskatoon days. Whenever I had the opportunity to see Dr. Philip Gordon as a patient, I would remind him of that and he would smile and....busy as he was...take a moment to reminisce about his youth at my Uncle's in little old Saskatoon. I might add that as far as I could tell, the older folk with Saskatoon connections were so proud of Dr. Philip. I truly hope that you, his loved ones, will be comforted by the many, many wonderful memories that you hold. As for me, it was a privilege to have been a patient of his and to have had a few occasions to interact with him. May his memory be forever a comfort and an inspiration. Dr. Renee Karp
