Dr. Shimshon Hamerman - 26 days ago
To the Alper family, I am saddened to learn of your father's passing. I am in Israel and I missed the funeral and will miss the entire Shiva. Your father was one of those great men of the previous generation that are simply no more. He was a man of dignity and brought class and dedictation to the synagogue's presidency. I had numerous meetings with him and I know how proud he was to have attended the Chofetz Chayim Yeshiva and how much he enjoyed quoting the Rabbinic passages which he knew by heart well into his 90s. John was a visionary and a community builder. Sarah and he were wonderful hosts for the entire community to their home Sukkah. Having survived the hell of Europe, community and continuity were important values for both of them and they practiced those values in the most tangible ways. May his memory be a blessing and may you be comforted among those who mourn for Zion and Jerusalem. Frances and Shimshon Hamerman

Mr. John Alper was a pillar of the TBDJ Shul. A steady supporter and true to the best interests of TBDJ. As a young boy, I remember that his Sukkah was a a major one when we went Sukkah hopping. He was a respected member of the Montreal community as a business man and philantropist. I witnessed first hand how much he enjoyed coming to Camp Gan Yisroel and to see with his own eyes how his financial support produced so many healthy activities for the children in the camp and made the accomodations more comfortable. Back to TBDJ, Mr. Alper was a very close friend of our father Rev. Berl Lebovics Z'L, who served as Chazan Sheini from the beginnings of the Shul. It is almost impossible to replace a man of his acomplishments. Surely the merits of his uncountable mitzvos of help to his fellow Jews all over, will bring him straight to Gan Eden. Boruch Dayan Emes.

Dear Hanna and Sheila, John’s passing truly marks the end of an era. An era of super Jews who survived the brutal days and years in Europe to come here and fashion an outstanding career while building a beautiful family. So many of us had the pleasure of his company and friendship. Listening to his countless stories interspersed with lessons from the Tanach which he quoted perfectly. He was so proud of you and even more proud of his grandchildren. May you find comfort in the many wonderful memories of your life together . Sincerely Myer

Dear Hannah, Sheila and Danny and family, It is with great sadness that I heard of the passing of your father. John Alper was a wonderful business partner of mine and Dad’s. For many years we worked together building and acquiring real estate. However John’s primary impact on my life was not his business acumen but his sweet, fun, outgoing personality. He was quite the raconteur, amusing us with many stories from his upbringing, his life in the Russian army, and of course the many fishing and hunting expeditions. Most of all, I loved John for the way he treated me. When I started working with John, I was young (under thirty) and yet he treated me with respect and as a friend, from day one. He will really be missed by me and my Dad.
