BARRY ROBINS - 16 days ago

Condolences to the Monk family.. Avner and I go back to Talmud Torah on St Joseph in the 50's. Avner was my alarm clock for years as his Dad would drop him off around 7.15 a.m., ring the bell, wake us up and my father would drop us off at school around 8.30. Those were the days. Later on we re-united on the hockey rink, Avy being the yappy goalie, and me being the intolerant Referee. Had great laughs during the games and he will forever be missed. Rest in peace old pal. Barry

Dear Jo-Ann, Elysa, Evan and all of the Monk and Duquette families; Cheryl and I are so very sorry to hear the news of Avner’s passing. I’ve known Avner from the Hi Georgie days close to 50 years and our friendship continued when we lived across the street from each other in Dollard as our kids were growing up. The great times and kibitzing, would be too long to list. When we moved to San Diego we remained in touch. …going so far as to meet up with you and Avner when you both travelled to Los Angeles and even to Las Vegas. You both honoured us with your attendance in helping us to celebrate Mark’s Bar Mitzvah in San Diego. Family was of utmost importance to Avner and he always talked lovingly about Jo-Ann, Elysa, Evan and all of his beloved grandchildren. Our friendship with Avner and Jo-Ann transcended time and distance. For us, as with anyone who knew Avner, these are very sad times. Our deepest condolences to all of Avner’s family.

Even though the pandemic keeps us all apart, technology is allowing us to be together to share the love and offer our condolences. May your good memories give you the strength to withstand your great loss, and may we all count our blessings to have enjoyed the company of our loved ones for so many years. I don’t write well enough to convey the deep sadness I feel. Perhaps it would be easier to impart my feelings if I was family or a close friend but I was neither. I was one of many agents that represented Libra across North America, having covered Atlantic Canada for him for 15 years until he was forced to close the company, but living in Montreal gave me ample opportunity to drop in on Avner, and I did often. I knew that I would enjoy the visit and Avner would always make me feel good when I left. He joked, bantered, complained (though always with that smile) and we shared stories of our respective families. He was quick to show me pictures of his grandchildren and it was obvious how proud he was of them. With so many years in the Maritimes behind me, I can honestly say, having dealt with so many manufacturers, that Avner was the nicest guy I ever worked for. My deepest condolences to the families.

My deepest sympathies to the family. Avner was one of the fun cousins at our family get-togethers when we were young. His mother Eva was my favourite aunt and I loved going over to the house. But my best memory was when I was a student nurse at the Jewish General doing my obstetrical rotation the night the Elyssa was born. The families were all in the waiting room and I was observing in the delivery room. After she was born, the nurse handed me the tiny package. I was thrilled to share that experience with the family, particularly Avner and my aunt and uncle who were over the moon with joy and excitement. I have never forgotten it. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Jo-Ann, Elyssa and Philippe, Evan & Sabrina and families. They say you never know what you have until it’s gone. I know I had my beautiful cuzzie. The Monk family at one time was very large but in my eyes Avner was my cousin. We worked together at Hi Georgie/Primrose sportswear for over 10 years where we both got our initial training for what would be the rest of our careers. We laughed and cried together and shared our everyday occurrences. Life took us on new paths however we always checked in on each other. Avner never ever forgot my birthday, and I would always remind him that he was 10 years older than me. His children were always his pride and joy and his eyes would sparkle when he talked about them. When Jo-Ann became part of his life you could hear the love and joy in his voice, his life became complete and so calming, something I sensed immediately. They were 2 peas in a pod, working, traveling, enjoying life. To my dear cuzzie, I will miss you. Rest In Peace until we meet again. Brenda, Danny, Goldie, Lisa & Sam, & Richard.

To the Family of Avner. My heart is broken. Our parents were best friends and when their wives died “Uncle Mack” and my father John travelled together for years. Avner was like an older brother, I grew up visiting their home, and as a child dancing in their living room on New Years Eve. Avner and I resumed our friendship these past few years, sharing pictures from our shared past and joking. I am so very sad for you loss. Indeed I remember him always smiling and so happy and proud of his children. His memory will always be a blessing for you . Rest In Peace Avner and know that you were loved.

Avner and all family, My Condolences.. Avner I met you so many times in our travels, at so many accounts. Always you were so interested in talking about everything that was relevant. Meeting up with you was a bright spot in a very stressful industry. My god Avner I never imagined this would be a mode of farewell. You were a very talented goalie, which I did see first hand. But it was your level headed Hello and and Hand Shake and conversations that always kept me glued to " Hey.. There's Avner, I have to stop, wait, detour, and talk to him.. never leaving without saying .. What a good guy you are. Thank you for those moments.. See you I hope on the other side. Rest in Peace.

Dear Elysa, Evan, and families. I’m so saddened by the news of the passing of your dad. He fought a long battle with such bravery and courage. While the pain must run deep, I know you will both find strength from the love that surrounds you. I have many fond memories of both your parents while growing up. Although I am STILL scarred from when your mom, against my knowledge, snipped my rat tail that I was sporting proudly at age 9 or 10 as we ate lunch in your kitchen (man she hated my rat tail), they were both great people, and my thoughts and prayers are with you all!!
