Bobby Bornstein was well known to us at the Solutions Journalism Network. His sales discipline — it takes 100 prospects to get five interviews to get one customer — is part of our lore, and we're grateful for that. But I also know how much his sweetness and caring meant to David, and how it informs the way he engages with us all. The world was blessed to have a man like that for a while.

Dear Bornstein family, I knew Bob because he coached Garner and I in CSL little league baseball a bajillion years ago. When you write "to know Bob was to love Bob" you are so right. Even at the age of 8 or 9 or whatever it was, all of us liked Mr Bornstein so much. He was ALWAYS smiling and nothing ever fazed him. We could be down 20 runs and he was the exact same guy, cheering each of us on to do our best and just have fun with each play. He was so nice and so warm. A great coach for little kids. And an even greater example of not letting little things (like getting killed in a baseball game) bother us. He was a true mentsch: a good, warm, person. Please know this: If I can look at someone's smiling face 50 years later and still smile and feel good inside at his gentleness and kindness all these decades later, then you know your dad, father in law, papa-zaidie, and uncle/great uncle, was a TRULY special man.

I am very sorry to hear of Bobby's passing. He was a good friend of my late dad, Larry, who called him "The Fabulous Mr. B" I grew up with Garner, David and Lisa. After my bar mitzvah I invested my savings with Bobby. A number of years later I called and told him I wanted to buy a Macintosh computer with that money and the interest I accrued. I went to his downtown Investors office and he made me feel like a million bucks as he handed me that cheque. He was one classy gentleman!!

To Lisa, David and families, heartfelt condolences on your loss. I have fond memories of Bobby. His warmth, kindness, and bright smile. He and my mom Arleen were Hiawatha alumni and bonded over those summers at camp. Bobby made sure that I understood how Arleen was a great athlete, as good as the guys, he said. When they saw each other I was struck by how they both maintained their youthful energy. A special, memorable guy.

Dear Garner, David and Lisa, Memories are our way of honoring those that have left us. I have a lifetime of them of both Dad and Mom, as we grew up together. I want you to know how grateful I am to have had the privilege to experiencing your Dad. He was a wonderful mentor to me in many ways, as he was my Dad as well. But perhaps the most important things he modelled to me were his loving heart, his respect for others, his patience, his infectious love of old music, baseball and movies and his deep deep love of his family. I am so sorry for your loss, I cherish his memory, miss the twinkle in his eyes, and , long for the old days of our family. May he memory be an inspiration for generations to come. Cousin Paul

1947Dear Garner & Bornstien Family Bobby was my first counseller @ Hiawatha in 1947 when I was a 7 yr. old 1st year camper. He was a great counceller, kind gentle and caring. Always talking baseball and even as a little kid l certainly looked up to him. Here we were a bunch a 7 year olds, away from home for the very first time, scared nervous etc. but Bobby made us feel comfortable and unafraid. I remember our bunk walls being covered with pictures of ball players that he cut out of baseball magasines and when I got homer from camp that summer I decorated my bedroom walls the same way. I remember Bobby & Chooch Helfield leaving camp early Tuesday afternoons to go to Montreal to play b all for the YMHA & him coming back & telling us about game the next morning. He ways m y Hero & inspiration , & I loved playing baseball because of him. He nicknamed me "PISTOL PETE" I was at camp for 3 more years and always tried to get on his team whether it was the Twi-lite league, tribal warfare of colorwar . i still somewhere have the plaque that the councellers made for us campers to be presented at the camp end banquet. During my growing up & adult years and after I moved my family to Ottawa, I would occasionally see Bobby in CSL and we would always have a nice chat. He always had a nice smile on and always a nice word to say about everybody. I am very sorry for your loss & I have great memories about Bobby an d I hope you cherish the memories you have of him Sincerely PETER BROTMAN - TORONTO, ONT

It was noticed, and admired. May you and your family be spared any further sorrow. please accept my sincere condolences.

My deepest condolences to the Bornstein family. I have fond memories of cousin Bobby,, Dick, Charlotte and Garner in South Lancaster way back in the early to mid 1950s. Bobby, Jimmy and the gang played baseball (practicing may be a better word) on the property in a big field near Highway 2. I was a fielder mostly. Bobby was always fun and effusive, always praising Pete Rose and Al Jolson. Their house with a big picture window overlooking Lake St. Francis with Aunt Charlotte presiding always the place for lively chatter and laughter.

Lynn and Andy Nulman - 28 days ago

To the entire Bornstein family--Lynn and I send our profound condolences on Bobby's passing. Given our closeness with Garner, we spent many celebratory times with him, and no matter when, where or why, there was never a time when he did not have a smile on his face. We talked often about music; especially the old-timers we both enjoyed. His pride for his kids and grandkids overshadowed everything ; I particularly remember him beaming with pride over a watch that Garner had bought him. His spirit infused all his kids, and with that, it's comforting to know that he lives on.

Brahm Gelfand - 28 days ago

Dear Lisa and Bornstein family. 1946 was my first year at Camp Hiawatha.. I was an athlete in waiting. Waiting for someone to show me what to do do and play. There was this little guy not much bigger than me who was a terrific 2nd baseman. He I learned was the younger Bornstein boy from Patterson NJ.. Well I left Hiawatha in 48 and went to another camp and our paths did not cross for many years thereafter but when we did meet it was the warmest of reunions and this continued for many years even while he was a resident of Maimonides. He was a very special person. Kind ,generous and had an indomitable spirit . For my generation his passing while inevitable it still is associated with saddeness as another member of our regiment has left us. Left us however, with the warmest of memories for a life well lived and admired by all whom he encountered. These memories I know will help overcome the grief of the present and bring pleasant moments in the future. Heartfelt condolences Brahm

Lisa, David and Garner. I'm so sorry about the passing of your beloved dad. I have such fond memories of him - coming to your house so many times, listening to his Gershwin music playing in the background, his lovely smile, his laugh. Your dad was someone who positively influenced me in my life- both as a young teenager - seeing how he was with each of you as a father, as a young adult when he got me to see with my first real job the benefit of investing my money in my early 20s for my future. I was fortunate enough to see him with Lisa a few years ago when i was visiting Montreal. He still had that sparkle in his eye. I hope that your memories of him help provide you comfort.

Your dad had the most gentle soul, he lived with a smile, a sense of simple joy, a slow Sinatra song guiding him and those around him,, with such class and authenticity.
