Blackie was a great band leader at Cummings for many years. He was a role model for band members, and adored by his dancing audience. His legacy is still carried on with the Heimishe Hour, as we still use « Blackie’s drums ».

Blackie always had a smile and a good word to say. The jokes were a bit dated but he always made you laugh. I remember him best from our years on Kent Ave and in later years at Cavendish Mall. Sophie and Blackie were so good to my late mother. He played at so many of our family simchas. He will be missed.

To the Blackman family. My history goes very far back with Blackie. I was recently having a conversation about him with Perry Carmen. Those were the good old days. To the Herman family There is not enough I can say about Blackie since he played at our wedding 69 years ago and then became friends years later with the shows and the choir at Cummings. Dear Herman family, Many wonderful and unforgettable memories flash before my eyes being part of the Blackie Herman Orchestra for many years.
