I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Goldstein family, friends and community. As volunteer and now chairman of Ensemble pour le respect de la diversité, I had the privilege of collaborating with this great leader and role model. Yoine was a human rights advocate who truly embodied these values in his career as a lawyer, as leader of the Montreal community and as a Canadian Senator. For us at Ensemble, Yoine will be remembered as a visionary who cofounded and cochaired our organization (Fondation de la Tolérance at that time). The work done in so many shools accross Québec, to build a world of diversity and social cohesion, is part of his great legacy.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I first met Yoine when he had returned to the practice of law after serving so well in the Senate. We were on opposite sides of the case, he is a litigator, I as a litigant. The circumstances don’t matter. What matters is the decency and humanity with which he treated me. A number of years later, the case having been resolved, one of my clients found himself with a very difficult bankruptcy problem. I met with Yoine with a view to briefing him on the case and referring my client to him. After I had briefed him, Yoine looked at me and said “Leslie, you are well able to handle the situation.” I looked at him and replied “True, but I am no Yoine Goldstein. My client needs Yoine Goldstein in room.” He took over the file, represented my client’s interests perfectly and achieved the desired results. Indeed, upon learning of Yoine’s passing, my client emailed me and told me how much he appreciated Yoine and how decently Yoine had treated him. As a man, Yoine was a Mensch. As a jurist, when Yoine entered a court room, it was the Judge who stood up, if not literally then certain figuratively.

Dear Elaine and Family, We were truly saddened to,learn of the recent passing of your beloved Yoine. All of us have our own particular memories of our interactions with him; however one of the best tributes ever paid to him was seen many years ago when he was a vibrant and active Senator. There was a time when the Canadian Senate had come under increased scrutiny due to the questionable actions of a few Senators. One of Canada’s major newspapers printed an editorial about the Senate entitled : “What We Need is Another Yoine”. That editorial said it all. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies during this very difficult time. Marlene and Joel King

Dear Elaine & Family. I was fortunate and privileged to enjoy an almost 50 year professional relationship with Yoine., commencing as a young Trustee and being the recipient, over decades, of his respectful mentoring. He was the undisputed "go to guy" in the Insolvency Bar, a fierce litigator for his numerous clients, whose work was held in awe by the Judiciary. He was also the consummate deal maker, bringing settlements of complex cases due to his relationships with his confrere opponents, many of whom were reticent in facing him in Court. I recall a meaningful conversation in a taxi in the mid seventies, after he had won a decisive decision against a high profile senior attorney. He talked about his humble roots, how he valued his own family and how appreciative he was of his parents. I also recall one error ( a very, very rare occurrence) in one of his interpretations in one file and his prompt acknowledgement and correction. Yoine shared his expertise in many seminars to Trustees and Confreres over decades. He was a self made Man who became a pillar to so many diverse constituents and, in particular, to his Family. I will miss his physical presence but will always remember the many exemplary memories. Howard
Frank Chalk - 9 days ago
Dear Elaine, Doron and Dahna, Like everyone else whose life Yoine touched, I will miss his warmth and wisdom very much. Yoine's deeply rooted empathy for the persecuted stranger and genuine commitment to the principle of human rights for all, combined with his admiration of General Romeo Dallaire, led him to collaborate with us at Concordia's Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (MIGS). His enthusiasm for "Mobilizing the Will to Intervene: Leadership and Action to Prevent Mass Atrocities," one of MIGS' major public policy research projects, matched our own at every step. And his vital synergy with Gen. Dallaire led them to co-found the pathbreaking All-Party Parliamentary Committee for the Prevention of Genocide, which spearheaded pressure on the Government of Canada to halt the mass atrocities committed by the Government of Sudan in Darfur. Yoine's remarkable accomplishments as a member of the Canadian Senate stand as a testament to what one highly motivated, truly decent, focused and wise person can do to repair the world while working close to the centre of political power. I know that you facilitated his work in Ottawa and that you shared his values. You helped him to advance the dream of a far better world than the one we inherited. All of us who work at MIGS send our condolences to you and your family. Yoine’s example will continue to inspire and enrich our work in every sphere. We will never forget him. Frank Chalk Co-founder and research director, MIGS

Dear Elaine ,Doran and Dahna, We send you our deepest sympathies on the death of Yoine. He was a devoted husband and father, loyal friend, brilliant lawyer, outstanding Senator and exemplary community leader. I met Yoine in 1947 when we started high school in the Latin Class at Baron Byng. He was an impressive student with a remarkable knowledge of art, music and generally, all cultural fields. At McGill we were both active in debating and went through law school together participating in the various activities. While in law school, at Yoine's suggestion I joined him on the teaching staff at the Temple Emanu-El, where we taught children on Sunday mornings. In the summer of 1959 I was awaiting my journey for studies in Italy when Yoine, (who was continuing his studies in Lyon) was head counsellor at Camp Hadar and asked me to be a counsellor. I accepted and spent a pleasant time in the Laurentians with a group of lively and challenging teen age boys. When we both came back from Europe to Montreal we had some spirited encounters in the courts, however throughout the years we maintained our close friendship. I am particularly grateful to Yoine for his involvement with the Alliance Israelite Universelle and his valuable and enthousiastic assistance while I was president of the Canadian Friends. We will surely always remember the great trip Yoine organised for a group of families with their children to attend the Maccabiah Games and visit Israel in the summer of 1981. It was an unforgettable experience. I recall the many occasions that we had reunions of the law class (named by the then Dean Kasirer ,"the glorious class of 1958") and the warmth of Yoine's relations with our classmates. I was privileged to have Yoine as a loyal and caring friend. Dear Elaine I am certain that you will be comforted, during this difficult period, in the knowledge that Yoine was a fine person, loving husband and father, who made an outstanding contribution in his many endeavours which will be of a lasting benefit. With affectionate best wishes, Joe and Marissa

Dear Elaine, So sad to hear of the loss of dear Yoine. There are so many fine moments when I crossed paths working on a committee with Yoine during his active Federation years. And I have warm memories of the time when my late husband , Stephen came up with the idea of The Tolerance Foundation and Yoine and Monette Malewski and Raymond Bachand jumped en board with him to create it. Yoine, like me, was not comfortable with the name, with tolerance in English meaning someone tolerating someone... in French, it has a more positive definition. We were both so happy when the present leaders changed the name to Ensemble pour Le Respect de La Diversité... and they continue to do the work the founders set out in all the schools in Quebec. Yoine touched so many people in so many different ways. He was a Mensches Mensch! His goodness poured into everything he did. Each time, over the last years that I would see him at the hospital there was never a complaint no matter what challenge he was facing.... and there were so many challenges. Elaine , you have been his angel. Morris who remembers Yoine as a kid with great fondness. That warmth and friendship continued. He joins me sending our thoughts and sympathy on the loss of such a great man.

Dear Elaine & Family: We deeply share your profound sense of loss. I reflect back on my many professional experiences with Yoine over the years, watching him up close and personal, raise his skills as a lawyer to the level of excellence so often that it became commonplace and taken for granted. Dear Family, Yoine was an amazing person. He knew so much about so many things; I was always in awe of him and his ability to use information for the better. His leadership as a Senator, in his profession and in community life was exceptional. He did so much for others and at all times you knew his family came first. He was an exceptional mentor to me in both his compassion and passion for Israel and the Jewish people and his ability to always see the person before the problem. He leaves an amazing legacy. I wish you comfort in these exceptionally difficult days.
Stanley Diamond - 11 days ago
Dear Elaine and family. I was shocked and saddened to learn of Yoine’s passing. Like so many others, I was fortunate to have reaped the rewards of his friendship, wisdom and counselling. I have known so few people who commanded the respect and affection that Yoine did, wherever he went and with whomever he dealt. While Yoine’s admirers in legal circles were legion, one of the most compelling testaments are the many opponents in cases who then become his clients the next time around. They saw the best in action and they wanted the best, Yoine. There was never a moment of doubt in anyone’s eyes when he was appointed to the Senate. At the time, it was considered wise and appropriate choice and there too he left an important mark. I was personally blessed when my friend Yoine became my company lawyer and provided the wisdom needed in turbulent times. My wife Ruth and I were doubly blessed to have Yoine play a key role in our marriage. His amazing intuition as never more evident than when, at a party we attended together, he saw me chatting with Ruth and came over and whispered in my ear, “you’re going to marry that girl!” And when our courtship hit a down patch, Yoine urged Ruth to “hang in there.” Once more, astute advice that has stood the test of time…for 54 years. May you be blessed with a lifetime of memories to sustain you at this most difficult time. I sign on behalf of Ruth, our children and grandchildren for we will all be in Yoine’s debt forever.

The death of our beloved friend marks the end of an era. Yoine was part of our lives for well over half a century. A Man of Letters; a celebrated practitioner of the Law, justice burned like an ignited flame deeply within his soul. An advocate for many, how ironic that he should be taken from us now, as humanity faces existential uncertainty brought on by a pandemic. Yoine's demise has rendered legions of individuals, who looked to him for comfort and security, far less certain and assured. His voice has been stilled. But let it be said, that the efforts he made throughout his lifetime for Tikkun Olam...the repair of a tattered world will last forever, because of his belief in the ultimate triumph of truth and righteousness. May his memory ever be for a blessing. Elaine, Doron, Dahna, Sarah and Ezra your loss is also our loss. Please accept our heartfelt expression of sympathy.
