Dear Eva and Family, We were saddened to learn about the loss of a very special person and long time neghbor. We go back to our high school Baron Bying days when we met on Fletcher's Field and speculated about the purpose of the world. Years later, Herbie became a neighbour when the family moved to Montreal West around the corner. Over the years when our paths crossed we often stopped to chat. Our talks were always thought provoking. His loss leaves a vacuum in our Jewish Community as well as in the National Community. May the family gather strength during this very difficult time and know of no more sorrow. Boruch Dayan Emeth.

Dear "Mrs. Marx" (Eva still seems too casual for a former student): I was so saddened to hear of the death of the wonderful and celebrated Herbert Marx, who I read about and cheered on (from a distance) not merely as a major political figure, but as the spouse of my favorite teacher. It is particularly sad that His life, for the moment, cannot be honored as it should and that, notwithstanding a wonderful family, that you cannot be embraced and consoled by a community that loved you both. My heart goes out to you and your family while also wishing you strength and fortitude. Memory is perhaps the most powerful quality of the human spirit, and I know that Herbert Marx will thrive in the personal recollections of you and your family, and in the public recollection of Canada as a whole.

Dear Eva and family. Of the many contributions that Herb made to society, what stands out most for me was his commitment to improve the plight of victims of violence and crime in Quebec. As Minister of Justice he conducted province-wide consultations and not only listened with compassion to the testimonies of victims of violence and crime and their family members, and to the recommendations of professionals, advocacy groups and community organizations but he showed he truly cared by his swift action. With the passing in 1988 of the Loi sur l’aide aux victimes d’actes criminels and under his continued leadership, Quebec recognized victims’ rights and introduced a comprehensive policy for victim assistance that included a compensation program and a multitude of programs, community supports and services. May you be comforted knowing how much his wisdom, commitment and actions have dramatically improved the lives of countless victims of violence and crime and their families.

Dear Eva and family. Eddie and I can only attest to all the wonderful words that described Herbie's lifetime achievements; however what we shall remember most about him was his wonderful sense of humour and the fact that he was "an average guy". We can still hear the echoes of his laughter as he told one of his wonderful stories, some about others, some he told on himself. Baruch Dayan ha-Emet. Sending you our most heartfelt condolences, Lydia & Eddie

I would like to express my deep condolences to Herb Marx’s family and friends. Prof. Marx hired me as a summer research assistant when he was a member of the Opposition. He was generous with his time and advice, smart, and so open-minded. I later ended up in Quebec City where he continued to show me such generosity. The qualities that marked his life and career –tolerance, open-mindedness and generosity – are sorely missing today.

Dear Eva - and the rest of the Marx family, We were devastated to hear of Herb's death. Herb was a marvel: witty, wise, and warm. He was always beaming that mischievous smile of his, which showed an appreciation for life's ironies and absurdities -- while also conveying a passionate love of life. We are most grateful for both of your friendship with Annie z"l and Marcel -- and, most particularly, for Herb's deep, enduring, loving, legendary, friendship with Marcel. Marcel relied on him as a trusted counselor, an entertaining walking partner, a rock of stability, and a fountain of wisdom. We in the next generation feel also blessed by our friendship with the both of you. We always enjoyed bumping into you at social functions - where the two of you delighted others and delighted in each other's company. And, we, too, knew we could trust Herb's insight, integrity, and intellect when we turned to him. We send you and your family love and condolences from Jerusalem - may you be spared further sorrow and comforted with the mourners of Zion. Love Linda and Gil and the kids

Dear Eva, I remember the twinkle in Herbie's eyes as he made some astute observation on the day news, when we gathered with old friends at our house, and at Schwartz' restaurant for Loy's 60th birthday; I remember Herbie honouring us by officiating at Jenni and Mike's wedding only a few years ago. If there's a heaven, perhaps he and Lloyd are greeting each other and discussing world events once again.

Dear Rob, - I am deeply saddened by the passing of your wonderful father. I know how much you cherished and admired him and am so sorry for your loss. One of my fondest memories of your dad is of him coming downstairs to your family's basement with his big, endearing smile to check in on us during the early years of our annual fantasy baseball league draft. Although we eventually graduated from your basement to the luxurious board room at Richter, it is telling of how much he meant to us that, in his honor, we named our league the “Herb Marx Rotisserie League,” which lasted for 25 years. Another special memory I hold close is his visit to address the law school at Universite de Sherbrooke while I was a student there and he was Justice Minister. I remember feeling so proud that my good friend’s father, whom I had known since I was 8 years old, was such a big deal and had achieved great heights and respect in both the Francophone and Jewish communities . . . not an easy feat. I am sorry that due to the Coronavirus your dad is not receiving the sendoff he deserves and that your family, especially your mom, cannot be surrounded in-person by all of the people who care for your family and loved your dad. Please know he will be missed and that memories of him will be a blessing. We have not stopped thinking about you, your mother, your sister, Rena, and the girls, and we hope to be able to see you in person soon. Please extend them our deepest sympathies. With love, Howard, Laurie, Isabelle and Oliver Kaminsky.

I want to express my deepest condolences to the Marx family. I first met Herbert Marx (whom we always knew as “Herbie”) in the mid-1970s outside the Black Rose Books office on St-Urbain, when we moved in the same circle of civil libertarians and progressives, a circle that included the late Abe Limonchik (who later served with me on Montreal City Council) and the late Lucia Kowaluk. Over the years, he was a good friend and advisor. I will always remember that he attended my wedding in 1982. We often had discussions over the phone about tenants’ rights when he served as Minister as Justice and later he was a Superior Court judge. He was a man of tremendous wisdom, principle and compassion. I will never forget how amazingly quickly he acted on my request for a Civil Code amendment to protect tenants against being stuck with huge rent increases if they answered a landlord’s notice in the wrong language. The case that triggered our conversation involved a 30% increase based on this technicality, which was causing widespread abuse by landlords. He simply closed the loophole and made the technicality correctible instead of fatal – and amazingly, he pushed it through the bureaucracy in a matter of months. In contrast, many years later, it took about 5 years, two governments and a community campaign to get the law amended so that abused spouses and other victims of violence could break a lease on two months notice. He as a man who truly believed in the Biblical principle: “Justice, justice, shalt thou pursue”. We will all miss him.

His community commitment and political contributions were above and beyond the call of duty. JACQUES PORTAL - 9 days ago
Over 48 years ago, Herbert and I met while we both entered Law School in Montreal; his french was very rustic and a short while after we went for coffee and i went through his prepared notes and for weeks on, i coached him on the proper delivery in French for a Anglo it was a challenge, our roads crossed again at the home of Claude Ryan, before he became a candidate and a number of time and i was impressed by the welcoming of Jacques Yvan Morin toward an Anglo and a Jew, Antisemitism was rampant in Quebec. I left for the old continent and we spoke once in a while and he was a straight shooter, not a typical politician but he had something very few people practice or have he cared for people and that was his trait, he was able to extricate himself from darkness to light and always kept in mind his origin. We will meet again in the other world most likely discussing the Talmud rather than the constitution of Canada. Quebec is indebted to him for planting much good seeds in a society much closed at the time to people like him. Chief Justice Alan Gold would always have a twinkle in his eyes when we spoke of him. We are all confined and as I told him a long time ago, i will say Kadish for him and include him in my long list of Yskor, May he rest in Peace and May the Almighty comfort his family. Amen

To the family of Herbert Marx: I sadly never had the opportunity to meet your loved one personally, and while it's unusual for strangers to leave a condolence in this way, I felt compelled to leave a notice. Herbert Marx left me with the impression merely through television and his writings he was highly principled, a true blue mensch. Had I studied law, I would have been delighted to have learned from him, but to me his finest hour was when he, and Messrs. Richard French and Clifford Lincoln resigned their cabinet posts strictly on principal back in early 1989. I learned he became a judge and I'm sure he was a fair, prudent and altruistic jurist. Sadly, being of the minority population, I felt the need to leave Quebec due to the political climate and economic opportunities I found elsewhere. I'm certain you all have memories that are far more plentiful and fond than I'll ever have. השם יברך (G-d bless).

Joel Pinsky - 10 days ago
Dear Eva, Robert and Sarah Herb and I first came to know one another in the early mid-70's when he joined my committee in Canadian Jewish Congress as a Constitutional Law expert. Our friendship developed and eventually he agreed to run as a provincial Liberal candidate for D'arcy McGee. There then followed many meetings that he, Lillian Vineberg and I shared at the Marx home in Montreal West. His nomination was not that certain. However, after a boisterous nomination meeting, "Herb Who" became our Liberal candidate and the ensuing years became a wonderful litany of Herb's various accomplishments as he continued to serve Quebec and Canada. Throughout the years and especially during the referendums, Herb was always there to provide his invaluable counsel and direction. He was a shining example of the collective Jewish contribution to Quebec society. Herb was very much his own man and will be greatly missed by all and especially by those who were privileged to have known him as a friend. May the wonderful memories he has left us all be of some consolation to you and the family as we bid him a sad but respectful adieu.

To the Marx family, losing such prominent figure in Quebec's society is fully regrettable. Honourable H. Marx, is probably recruiting candidates that passed on before him at the faculte de droit from the UofM, to start up a new faculty in the heavens and I am sure he will be well received. To his family, may his legacy bring you comfort, that this person did an amicable job here in Quebec, many thanks. A sincere dedication to a life well lived. Condolences to all concerned, may you all be blessed.

His professional and personal implication in and dedication to Quebec society are legendary and laudable, as so many others have shared with you.

Dear Eva, Robbie and Sarah, I am truly saddened to learn of Herb’s passing. You and I had spoken just a few days ago and I knew he was ailing however this still comes as a shock! What memories we have! Herb’s name first came to my attention when Claude Ryan mentioned him at a meeting at my home set up to search for a candidate for D’Arcy McGee riding. He subsequently became our riding representative, an elected MNA then Minister of Justice for the province. As president of our riding association I always looked forward to our monthly meetings with Herb when he brought us up to date with current events in Quebec City. These meetings were sprinkled with a lot of humour and good fun. Our visits to Quebec City expanded our horizons and brought us all closer to Quebec society , a society of which Herb was a great admirer. Reciprocally Herb was greatly admired by Quebec society. He was an exemplary representative of our community to Quebec. My thoughts and prayers go out to you at this time. Baruch Dayan Emet!

Dearest Eva, Robbie and Sarah, So sad to learn of Herb’s passing. I remember when we invited 20 people to our home to try and identify a representative for the National Assembly that our riding that we would be proud of. Joel Pinsky suggested that Herb Marks would be the ideal candidate. I didn’t know him and Joel suggested we meet Herb for lunch, which we did. During our discussions, it was clear that this was a brilliant person, with high ethical principles, soft spoken but passionate about justice and honesty. We could see that he was not afraid to stand up for what was right, while understanding the need for diplomacy and fairness. He was our man. He thought about our request to be our representative and looked at me and said, I’ll do it if you run my campaign. I agreed. The rest is a wonderful story of friendship with two of the finest people I knew, Eva and Herb. His humility and kindness was legendary. He adored his family and was so caring to Eva’s Mom. We’ll remember Herb as one of the most unique, accomplished individuals. Morris joins me sending our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy to you and your families. Love, Lillian

Dear Eva, Sarah, Rob & Families, We are so heart broken over the loss of your dear Herb. We pray that your wonderful memories will provide some comfort during this difficult time. We will always remember the dinners we shared in your home - Herb at the head of the table drinking great wine and joking around, smiling. Eva, your love and devotion is extraordinary.

Dear Eva, Robert and Sari, I'm so saddened to learn of Herb's passing, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm also so grateful for how wonderful a friend and mentor Herb was to me. He always seemed to have faith in me, even when I questioned my own; it pushed me to believe in myself when times were tough. Always inspiring, I'm blessed to have stood in his shadow. May his memory be a blessing.

It hurts whenever a pillar of the English & Jewish community leaves us. While having met Mr. Marx on only one occasion his stature and caring nature were immediately felt. To his family I extend my condolences on his passing. David Winikoff Washington, DC
