Dearest Iris, Joanne & all the tight knit family of my beloved friend Betty Nowa I have fought hard to try to express the love & devotion that I have felt most of my life time being her “Carola” To have been “adopted” by “the girls” Shirley & Betty is a gift that cannot be explained easily... These past few days have been a whirlwind of thoughts & memories enough to fill a book, write a sitcom, share laughter & stories that might have you all scramming for more... From early on I was lucky to be adopted by these friends, surrogate mums , never alone on holidays, wonderful times when for years my beloved mum visited Montreal ...they had so much fun.. without my knowledge they became my Cagney & Lacy two female detectives who would even travel to check out a would be suitor They were determined to be matchmakers for Carola... through tears of these past days, Betty would be finding this funny herself that I can only talk & share happiness ... During the past year with the challenges she faced she was determined to track me down find me so that we could talk about These and other mentions dear to us How she lived her wonderful life with her Syd and her girls & family Because of her friendship & love for me Betty organized where our marriage would take place ... Almost 23 years have passed since that beautiful wedding shared with family & friends from across the world! The loving Montrealers there would know how much this meant to the girls ! William Island was lit with Love!!! As life’s challenges came to darling Betty she never lost her zest for living.. What’s doing? What are you making? Designing? What movies Shall I see? “‘Always curious, always in the moment & always thanking me for our friendship , over & over telling me how she loved me.. Thank you darling Joanne for bringing her to New York, How we all embraced in the shoe department of Sax Fifth Ave a few years ago. She longed to return , Reading all The words about herself she would almost feel shy not realizing how much of an impact she created in her lifetime. & you Joanne mummy passed the torch for you were at the cemetery today and your found the strength & courage to text me Funeral starting now You see my loving friend, Carola was not left out! Fly to heaven wave, can hear you say dont worry , thank you my special angel I shall miss you but shall never forget your laughter You shall remain in my heart forever more Your loving Carola and of course Stanley & family in London Deepest Sympathy to you all x.

Dear Nowa Family, I actually met Betty at a pay phone at the JGH and she struck up a lively connversation with me instantly. When I met her and Shirley at the Adath playing Bridge, it was love at second site...her really caring about the other person, her values, her positive attitude, her zest and the sparkling eyes when she animatedly spoke all reminded me of my amazing Mom and we bonded! I can't tell you all how sad I am feeling that this vibrant human has passed away. RIP sweet Betty 😞

Betty Nowa Betty and Sid took me in as their own in 1975. We spent summers hanging out at their pool, me and Joey’s friends. I was a bad boy in my youth but they loved me and I loved them. I told them I was tired of being a salesman and they introduced me to my future partner Mr Fred Povitz. I moved to LA to start Jewelpak. Fred and I built it to be one of the packaging companies in the world. Joanne and another friend actually escorted me to California to open this business. Fred and I went on to build the largest box company in the world. Nothing like that would have happened without Betty, Joanne and Sid. Sid became somewhat of a teacher to me. An invaluable tool I used my whole life. Betty and I would laugh for hours on end. I used to make her laugh a lot. What a woman! Betty Thank you for my life! RIP Betty and Sid Ike Banoun

Janet Takefman - 23 days ago

Dear Iris and Joanne, I am gutted to learn of your mom's passing. I haven't seen her in over a year but prior, every time I ran into her it was like I was a long-lost daughter. All that you wrote in her obit and everyone's condolences are so true. She not only would light up a room but she had this innate ability to bring out the light in whomever she was interacting with. She was pure bliss and her happiness was contagious. She was always so excited to catch me up with such pride on the lives of her daughters and grandchildren. Iris I'm sure you remember how when we were only 16, and her and your dad were away one weekend, you and I in our teenage wisdom decided to take her Thunderbird out for a spin to the Julep. The fact that neither of us had a driver's license seemed unimportant. I drove because I had a learner's permit and naturally wrecked that beautiful, champagne-coloured Tbird. I thought that my life was over that day. But your mom not only calmed your dad down but also smoothed things over with my parents. She was simply amazing. In later years whenever I ran into her we would laugh about that story. Its just one of 100s of stories I hold dear to my heart with regard to your family. I will cherish her memory forever. I send you and your families my most profound condolences with love.

First of all my deep condolences to Joanne, Iris, Jeffrey and all the grandchildren, aunts, uncles and cousins. You are lucky to have one great mom in life. I was blessed to have three. My mom passed 9 years ago. I lost my other mom (Helen Levy) last summer and now Betty. It really is the end of an era where I lived, traveled, played cried and laughed with these amazings women. Betty was full of light and love. I always felt the love she had for Lorry, Joanne and myself. It was only surpassed by the ease and laughter that Betty always had. We loved her so much and we always felt that love in return. I spent my teenage years sleeping and living at Betty's house. The generosity of Syd and Betty was unparalleled. I was always treated like one of the family. Betty with her great smile, sense of elegance in the way she carried herself and took care of her family even after losing Syd. A heart that was ablaze for the ones she loved. An amazing day was hanging out at the Nowa's pool. For Betty it was the more the merrier. She loved having all her kid's friends at the house feeding them whatever they wanted. and loving them like they were her own. We even nicknamed her Hersky..too long a story but it made her laugh. Betty was our friend and confident. I have so many memories that can only be shared with Joanne and Lorry. Goodbye my final mom. I will miss you like you were my mother and will cherish the memories that we all shared with you. Gone but never forgotten our beautiful and kind Betty. You will always live on in our hearts and the hearts of anyone that ever knew you. So blessed to have been part of your life. Love always, Sheree.

Dr. Jeffrey Indig - 23 days ago

Betty was such a beautiful person who loved her family so much and was such a kind and generous soul. With her ever present smile and infectious laugh, she would make everyone she met feel very special and cared for.Having the charisma to light up a room and an optimistic nature, that always looked at life as if the "Glass was half full" . She had a real sense of style and sophistication about her, though she always maintained a genuine humility. Her difficult early life, growing up in the Depression, built a real strength of character in her. The wonderful married life she shared with her beloved Sydney ,z"l in which they always valued the love of family and of close friendship, but still were very concerned about the community at large. They became major philanthropists and great supporters of the State of Israel. Betty even devoted her time volunteering for years at the J.G.H. just to help others. I loved her as if she was my own Mother and she always made me feel like the son she never had.The love that she had for her family held no bounds, traveling twice across the world by herself, just to visit my wife Joanne and her grandchildren. She was courageous and extraordinary throughout her life, a true Women of Valour. Our hearts ache for her and she will always be remembered with love for her warm smile , laughter and how she made everyone feel cared for.She was a wonderful Mother,Grandmother and Great Grandmother. I would like to acknowledge my wife Joanne and her sister Iris, for their beautiful devotion and love that they gave their beloved Mother. She will be sorely missed by all who loved her and knew her. Our love for her will live on forever, and may she rest in eternal peace.

Dear Iris, Joanne and Jeff and families, Our deepest sympathies to you on the passing of dear Betty. She was a special lady: sweet, kind, caring, fun and generous. Betty was the “sister” that Shirley never had. She was her closest friend and confidante. For so many years, they shared daily lunches and outings, winters in Florida and fun adventures. We just recently laughed about their annual road trips to New York when they would get lost and call home EACH AND EVERY year for help and directions. They were a team, a “dynamic duo” ... a really great team who thrived on each other’s friendship. We hope that the wonderful memories of time spent with your dear mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother will bring a smile to your faces and help ease the pain and sadness. Fondly, Fred, Earl, Elaine, Shaun, Richard and Lauren

Daniel and I are both immensely saddened by Betty’s passing. Betty was a woman of valor and elegant grace, who cherished her family dearly. Betty had special bonds with each and every one in her family - we admired the wisdom and deep mutual respect shared between her and our Saba Yossi. We will always remember the quality time we spent with Betty on our way to Hudson to celebrate happy occasions every year. To Betty we were “The Boys” and to us no one was more warm, affectionate and caring a person. We knew Betty to be a beautiful mother, grandmother and great grandmother who at heart loved all people. We’re with all family in mourning this loss together.

Dear Joanne, Iris, and all of Betty’s family. I join you in sadness over the loss of Betty. We became close friends later in life but we shared a dear bond that we both cherished. We had many adventures together in Florida, playing bridge, dining out, laughing a lot. We relied on each other. Betty was an important part of my life. I loved her dearly, she was a wonderful person. Shirley.

I join those who mourn Betty’s passing. She not only was a neighbour, but my late brother’s friend, he having been the Nowa accountant for many years. May the Lord comfort members of Betty’s family among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may you know no further sorrow.

As a result of being the two of the youngest of the original 15 cousins, we have fond memories of the close relationship that Betty and Sid had with our late parents Max and Jean. Uncle Maxie adored his nieces and nephews, with Betty adding a special sparkle. We looked up to our glamorous, fun loving cousin who was always an upbeat addition to any family gathering. It's wonderful to see these beautiful tributes in honour of Betty. To Iris and Joanne and your entire families, we send our deepest condolences. You were wonderful, caring daughters, which is a reflection of the amazing mother you had. Treasure your memories for even though the song has ended the melody continues on. Fondly Gloria and Wally, Iona and Marvin

Dear Joanne, Jeff and family, it was with great sadness that we learned of your mother’s passing. Betty was truly a special person: warm, vibrant and fun—big energy in a small package. With her generous heart, she made us feel like we were part of the family from the moment we met her. Our only regret is that we were not able to spend more time with her, and with you all. She will be greatly missed. At this difficult time when we are forced to be apart, our whole family sends you virtual hugs and all our love. ❤️🌈❤️🌈

Dearest Joanne, Jeff and family, We were all so saddened to hear of the passing of your dear mother. Betty was a very loving and caring person who left a lasting memory in everyone who had the honor of knowing her. Betty was always surrounded by her loving family and her good friends. She had a special kind of wisdom, empathy and optimism that brought sunshine into the hearts of those who sought a moment of comfort or encouragement. For Betty, family was always at the forefront. She was loved and admired not only by her children and grandchildren but also by extended family members who loved her like their own mother or grandmother. Betty was also blessed with the special relationship that she had with Joanne, her loving daughter, and Jeff, her loving son. For years, Joanne was there for her mother from the early morning phone call throughout the entire day, attending to all of her needs. Jeff took special pleasure in running errands and preparing all of the special things that brought happiness to Betty's life. This special relationship of unrelenting love, devotion and respect bestowed by Joanne and Jeff was without a doubt the primary factor which brought much happiness to Betty's life and enabled her to enjoy a happy, healthy and long life. Joanne and Jeff, you should find solace in the fact that you both have fulfilled the commandment "Honor thy father and thy mother". Please accept our deepest condolences and may you never know of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family at this very sad time. All our love, Tova and Avi Dror (Indig) Galit and Evyatar Halevi and family Eyal and Adi Dror Maayan and Ofir Herman and family Betty's "children" and "grandchildren" in Israel

Dear Cousins, Andy, described your mother perfectly. Sunshine and sweetness. Betty was warm and vivacious and had the most memorable laugh and the sweetest voice. I have countless wonderful memories of her from my childhood and vacations in Florida with my grandparents which I will always hold dear. I used to get a kick out of listening to her and my grandmothers phone calls. They were quite the red headed duo. She had a beautiful friendship with my grandmother and they taught us the importance of family and staying close to your cousin's. When I would see her at the mall with my kids her face would light up and she was always so excited to see me. I am so sorry for your loss. She loved her girls and grandchildren so much! I love you Betty and I will miss you very much! You were a very special cousin. BDH

Dear Iris, Joanne & Jeff and Grandchildren, More beautiful and accurate words enveloping the essence of Betty and her relationship with her family and all the many lives she touched could not have been spoken. Touching tributes being written and submitted by friends and family echo these sentiments. Betty was both fun and very funny. Warm and embracing to all lucky enough to be welcomed into her wide sphere. Her love for her Syd, her girls and her grandchildren was infinite. Betty’s youthful zest for life will live on in her indomitable spirit. I’ll miss her as I do Syd, both wonderful and magnetic personalities who drew so many people close in their lifetimes and whose memories will continue to bring smiles and kind thoughts and words always. Love Dougie and Cynthia.

Dear Cousins: Since the early morning, when I heard of Betty’s Passing, I have reflected on the years when we were young Girls and our family gatherings. Clearly, Syd and Betty were the ultimate gracious hosts and there was always excitement to be Invited to your home. Our grandmothers, being sisters, Brought up our mothers to be close as well. They were attractive, Red haired , fun-loving “gals” and ultimately maintained their close relationship after marrying, our parents taking trips together And settling in same area in Florida. Betty was everyone’s favourite Relative and for me she was more akin to an aunt, not a cousin. Even while suffering with her own pain from a fall, she would Call me several times a week after Isidore died, leaving a Sweet message “Just checking on you, Lana, hope you are ok!” That was your mother, caring, loving and considerate; worrying About others, It’s very comforting for me that we are carrying On our mothers’ legacy of family and always stay in touch with One another. I loved your Mom very much! Rest In Peace, Sweet lady! Lana xo

Lynn and Andy Nulman - 24 days ago

In the more than 50 years that I've been fortunate enough to know Betty, I never, ever, ever ever, ever, ever saw her without a beaming smile on her face. She was warmth personified, and was always most kind to myself (from childhood to my current grey-haired status), to Lynn, to my entire family, but most notably, to my parents. Even after they passed, I got a call every year from Betty on their "in memoriam" dates, when we would share memories and stories. She also called every Jewish holiday to catch up with Lynn and family news, and made sure to make herself known to our daughter-in-law Michelle...the same way she did with Lynn some 35 years previous. In recent years, she would always make me laugh by exclaiming "Well look who's here! My favourite cousin!" every time we met. She was sunshine and sweetness who was deservedly showered with love and respect from family and friends. Lynn and I will miss her presence.

Lorry Levy and David Silver - 24 days ago

Circa 1969; Joanne: Hi Mom, I’m home. Lorry and Sheree are with me. Betty: Where were you girls? Joanne: Out Betty: Oy! It’s after midnight Joey! What were you doing? Joanne: Just groovin’. Betty: Lorry, Sheree…..SO WHAT’S GONNA’ BE? Want something to eat, girls? Betty Nowa was one of a kind. She created an inviting sense of warmth in her home for her husband, Syd, their 2 daughters and ALL of their friends. This included pool parties that never required an invitation, “socials” in the basement blaring music of the 60’s and 70’s, and just plain “hanging out” with friends and very often with Betty. She loved to be with the “kids”. Her generosity knew no limits. Her kind heart was evident the moment she caught your eye. Betty’s smile and laugh were contagious. She was sweet and funny and brave….having to struggle through health issues in the last few years, she persevered with the amazing care that Iris and Joanne made certain that she had. I will miss her terribly. My memories of Betty will always make me smile and looking at the loving faces of her family, will warm my heart to know that she lives on in all of them. So that’s the answer, Betty….you asked, “What’s gonna’ be?”…..your children, your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren will carry on your legacy of love and kindness….that’s what’s gonna’ be. Through my fountain of tears, I say, “Rest in peace, Betty”.
