I was sad to see the passing of Ben Pekeles. When I was much younger, I would hitch a ride with the Pekeles family almost every week to go skiing up north. I suppose that was the beginning of my life long passion for it and honestly I know it was due to the kindness of Ben and the whole family who took me along with them. It is very sad when somebody who impacted your life for many many years passes on but it is good to know that the memories live on forever.

Allan Becker - 14 days ago

Ben was a role model for the elusive "gentleman mench". He was a prince among men who demonstrated a warmth and compassion not seen enough in our society. His ability to exude both a dignified deportment and a humbleness at one and the same time was admirable. I respectfully echo the words of Martin Surkis whose sentiment is identical to mine. "Ben was a favorite of my late mom and she passed onto me her admiration and sincere love for him".

Irwin Zelniker - 14 days ago

Dear Renee, Ellen and Family, It is with a heavy heart that I send sincere condolences on behalf of the MEC Board. Ellen and I have known each other for about 9 or 10 years; the last 5 of which we've been MEC Board colleagues. During that time, we have shared many family stories in part because my father was also stricken by PD so I could relate to the challenges you faced as a family. We also exchanged many fun pictures and I still have some of Ben from Florida and Montreal during Ellen's many visits. I always thought the family resemblance was remarkable. You are a loving family and that will serve you well during these difficult times. May all of the fond memories provide you some joy and peace. Sincere sympathies from all of us at MEC, Judi

Dear Renee and Family, It is with great sadness that we learned of Ben's passing. We knew he had not been well lately, but his sudden (to us) death was a shock. I have wonderful memories of Ben when we were steady tennis partners in Stowe for many years. He used to come to my house to pick up my tennsi racket on Shabbat and then met me at the court. Both of you were members of our biking group, and he was always "the daddy" who rode behind every one, to make sure we were all allright and that no one stayed behind or got lost. He was always a kind, gentle person and it was always a pleasure to be in his company. I only regret that we virtually lost touch in later years. Renee, may you be comforted by knowing that Ben was agreat guy who was loved by everyone who knew him. Josie and Arthur Roskies

Martin Surkis - 15 days ago

Dearest Pekeles Family. It is with a very heavy heart to learn of Benny's passing. From early childhood Benny was a dear and beloved cousin. From the town of Ostropolia, Khmelnystskyi, Ukraine, we shared a common ancestor Abraham Dove Heller our great great grandfather (a direct descendant of Rabbi Lippman Heller "Tosefet Yom Tov 1579-1654). As early as I can remember, Benny and the Litinetsky - Pekeles families played a significant part in my life. I have vivid memories of family gatherings on Rue Esplanade at the corner of Rue Clermont and of the humble beginnings of A. Dubord et Cie located directly behind the house on Rue Clermont. Thanks to Benny, when I was about nine years old I got my first taste of delivering merchandise to their customers by riding shotgun in one of their trucks, delivering to Laurier BBQ. In 1963 I became a summer employee of A. Dubord when they were then located at at 666 Champagneur in Outremont. It was a pleasure to work for both Benny and Sam, maintaining the warm family relationship our families always had. As time past we would meet on occasion, be it a family simcha or a loss in the family. Benny and I would meet annualy at the Shaare Hashomayim as we shared a common date for both our father's Yortzeits. Benny was a favorite of my late mom and she passed onto me her her admiration and sincere love for him. He was a truly special person (a Mench) in my life. On behalf of Judy and myself, please accept our heartfelt condolences on his passing. May your many memories bring you confort and may Benny forever rest in peace. He will not be forgotten. With love, Martin and Judy Surkis
