Sometimes, in life, something happens that causes decades to evaporate and returns you to your childhood, before ever having heard of COVID-19, ever having worried about relationships or money, ever having been an adult. In an instant, you are transported back to a black-and-white world and become characters in a Mordecai Richler novel. This happened to us when we heard of Mr Marton’s death: we remembered the idyllic cocoon of Rand Avenue, the perfect next-door neighbours, and a far, far simpler life a half-century ago with family and friends. We send you our deepest sympathies.

Dear Aunt Sylvia and all my Dear Cousins: I share your grief at the passing of Uncle Lou, a man whose love and warmth and compassion had and still has a huge impact on my life. (My maternal grandfather and Lou's mother were brother and sister. and my mom, Roselle, and Lou were very close.) As a child, when my biological parents were divorcing, my visits to Lou and Sylvia's home in Montreal were a reminder to me of the love that I would want to have for myself as an adult. As an adult, visiting with them in Florida with my own children, it brought me immense joy to see them share their love with my children. I wish I could be there in person to hug you all and cry together. Instead, I send you my wishes that you may find comfort in cherished memories of happy and heathy times together. Lou's name will always be a blessing in my life as I know it will be in all of yours. PS Lou passed away on the 2nd anniversary of my mom's death: 6/23/18 and 6/23/20. And 6/23 is my Pop (Bob's) birthday. I will visit their graves today to pray some more for all of them.

Dear Auntie Sadie, Murray, Steven, Brain and family. I am so very sad to hear of Uncle Lou's passing. If there is one thing that I knew, for decades and decades, and still know, was that Uncle Lou and Auntie Sadie were partners, in the true meaning of life. As a child, visiting all of you, in Huntington, I would see, that they were almost literally joined at the hip. This was something that I always wanted to emulate, partners as the definition was meant to be. Now, this is as rare as the antiquities. Uncle Lou would always try to put Auntie Sadie on the pedestal, only to be out manoeuvred by her, doing the same. Everyday, like a ritual, they would go to work, not far from the house to Marton's Family Store, for years and years. Then for many more years drive together 1 hour from Montreal to Marton's, as the team they were, and then back 1 hour the return trip. Rarely, would anyone see Uncle Lou without Auntie Sadie. Always seems with a smile, a laugh, and a joke, which would make one believe that everything in life is really happy go lucky. No one could walk away after being with them, without a smile. Then, there was their next great chapter in life, the sports persons they were, constantly on the go, be it tennis or golf or whatever, there was always some energetic thing there were off to do. It is just with this memory do I want to remain with. My condolences to all of you and may you be spared of further sorry. Harvey Chazan
