Dear Ala and your loved ones, I was in shock when I read about your tragic news. I remember like yesterday that Wagar High School was about to open and my dad,z"l, told me that Mr. Tolchinsky`s daughter would be a teacher there. I asked what your name was; he said, in his European style, that it was a "funny" name. When I came home after my first day, I asked if that funny name was Gamulka and, of course, it was. You were my teacher and then, tutor. I became your babysitter for Jonah and then, Danny and Beth. You both came to our wedding. We connected again at CVE. Larry, z"l, was the same - soft-spoken, gentle with a beautiful smile. His presence will be missed by all, who had the good fortune to know him. May you be blessed with many happy memories of times past. BDE.

Dear Gamulka Family. I have known Larry almost from the day he arrived in Canada. He was in my class at Baron Byng, and lived in the same part of Montreal ,Hutchison and St, Viateur, as my family. He was the gentlest of souls, and always had that smile on his face. No one would ever guess the difficulties he had gone through as a child. He was a true friend, and even though my visits with him were years apart we picked up our conversation immediately . We even managed to get together after he moved to Toronto. The wonderful tributes one sees in the condolences confirm what a unique, kind ,Mentch Larry was, and how many lives he impacted on. We have all lost so much by his passing, but you his family, whom he loved so much ,have lost the most. May all the great memories you have sustain you at this most difficult time. TNTBH.

Dear Gamulka Family, My sincere condolences on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather. He will always be known to me as Mr. Gamulka. I never got to hear the words "You are so lucky to have him as a teacher!", but I was fortunate to know him through my father (Aaron) at Beth Zion. Mr. Gamulka was my science teacher in West Hill High School. He was kind, encouraging and patient. I am not ashamed to say I had a mini crush on him - something in his eyes spoke to this shy grade eight student. Years later I met up with the entire family on a trip to Israel. He was as lovely as ever. I have never forgotten him and am unlikely to do so. May he rest in well-deserved peace and may his cherished family know no more sorrow. With sadness, his faithful student, Sarah Reingewirtz

To the Gamulka Family - 11 days ago

There are some people, probably counted on one hand, that make a difference in our lives. Mr. Gamulka, one of my teachers in West Hill High School was one such person. I'm now 69 years old and still remember his soft demeanour, his unending patience and gentle way of speaking. He was a decent human being - a true mench. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, hours before enter Tisha B'Av. There is no doubt that your beloved father and husband will storm the Heavens in his own, quiet, sweet way, beseeching Hashem to send down peace and good health and may that happen before the fast. It was an honour to have him as my teacher.

Dear Ala, Beth and Wally, and the entire Gamulka Family: We are sending our sincere condolences to you, from just a few blocks away. But our family connections go back decades, to the old country, as we like to call it. The new old country. We have intersected on so many paths along the way.. Your dear husband, father, father in law and Zaidy was such a lovely sweet and wise man. I recall him sitting quietly on the chair as Ala told Jasmin her entire story of survival, immigration etc, etc.. he listened intently, admiring her storytelling (and shmoozing) for the zillionth time. And beaming at family sim has. So full of love for his incredible family; and a life very well lived. May his memory be a blessing to you all for years to come. Mr. Gamulka was such an encouraging, gentle and friendly teacher with a fine sense of humour. I remember him particularly in his role as our invaluable Reach For The Top coach in 1975, If only we had known of his own personal history and past when we were high school students, we would have been in even greater awe of how far he'd come in his own life! Arriving in Canada at the age of 14 not knowing a word of English, later becoming a high school English teacher, not even to mention surviving difficult circumstances during childhood, while keeping his amicable and supportive character intact. Heartfelt condolences to Mr Gamulka's extensive family and thanks and gratitude that he was a part of my life at Monklands.
