I’m still trying to make sense of this tragic news, it doesn’t feel real that Neil isn’t here. He left a lasting impact on so many of us, showing the way of what it means to truly dedicate yourself to the greater good of our community. I learned so much from Neil in my years of working with him at FCJA. He always expected the best from all of the staff and volunteers alike and I’m grateful for the many lessons, the striving for perfection, and the incredibly good times we had. It doesn’t go without saying that the best thing he did was make everyone feel welcome and special. Neil created a feeling of inclusion and family, belonging to our community was available for anyone that wanted to put in the time. It is clear from all the many stories and notes shared by so many that his impact on us all will continue to live on in all of us. To the families, I am so sorry for your unimaginable loss and I wish you to be lifted and comforted by knowing how much good Neil has done in what most people don’t achieve in their lifetime.

I am so sorry to hear this awful news.... I have very fond memories of Neil going back decades when he was a teen -- he was a force of nature even then -- warm, upbeat, passionate, a real hoot to be around. And then, just two years ago I was in Toronto at a community event and who was there -- Neil -- i was hopping around North America that trip, and he was so welcoming, so kind, so solicitous, he made that trip a real highlight! (he also fed me very well too, as I recall).... Sending love from Jerusalem, and saluting a real mensch who always brought a smile to my face - and to everyone else lucky enough to cross his path... may you all be comforted with the mourners of Zion!

Dear Uditsky and Naiberg families- I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of my cherished friend Neil. We met in the summer of 1991 on an amazing trip to Israel that still to this day is one of the best summers of my life. And I have Neil to thank for that -full of life and enthusiasm, always with a smile and a hug, hilarious and passionate and an incredible friend. He made the trip unforgettable for all of us with his energy and aura. It’s been 29 years and he never missed calling me or texting me for my birthday -every year! I loved hearing about his beautiful children and family, and I remember my trips to a Montreal to visit with great fondness. My sister Magen and I are so deeply sorry for your loss. He was an incredible human being and he will always hold a special place in my heart. May his memory be a blessing.

Ernie D'Alessandro - 19 days ago

I am still in shock to learn this horrible news. From the moment I met Neil as his baseball coach in PeeWee and up through Midget he was one of the nicest and hardest working guys. As a teammate he was always there with a word of encouragement. Over the years we would run into each other before his move to Toronto and it was always that great big smile that greeted me followed by a hug. The world has lost a really good and nice guy and we are poorer for it. To the entire Uditsky family my heartfelt condolences. Rest easy my friend.

To the Uditsky family: I coached Neil in baseball for one year, when Neil played Midget AA and Ernie D'Alessandro was the head coach. Neil was a pleasure to work with, both as a player and as a young man. His enthusiasm for the game was palpable, and he was a wonderful teammate. I was both shocked and saddened to hear this horrible new. Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

Alissa Fefergrad - 20 days ago

Since hearing the news, I have been in shock and at a loss for words. Though we hadn’t been in touch in recent years, memories came flooding back. I met Neil when I was about 16 years old, but I only truly got to know him when he hired me at my first job out of university in the apparel industry. Over the years he became a friend and mentor. He was always ready to listen and give advice on anything and helped me through some difficult times in my life. To this day, he was the only person that I ever let call me “Lissy”, which he knew I hated, but did it anyway. I will miss his extremely loud laugh, his smile, his jokes (even the inappropriate ones), his big bear hugs… him. To the Uditsky and Lifson family, I offer my sincere condolences during this unimaginable time. Take comfort in remembering all the wonderful memories that you have of him and know that he was loved by so many people. May you all be spared further sorrow.

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Uditsky family, Elissa and their children, Robyn and her children. This is truly devastating news - the world and the Jewish community have lost a great human. I've known Neil, via my brother Michael (Wagar and softball) for longer than I can remember. 'Staaaaaark' was the warm and smiling greeting he gave me every time I saw him. Consistent and full enthusiasm and happiness always. I hadn't seen him in some odd 20 years but was so happy to be recently reacquainted with him at a mutual friend's Succoth lunch in Toronto (where I live now). It was such a cherished throwback. I got the 'Staaaaark' welcome and caught up like we had seen each other yesterday . It was just that easy to feel that way with him. I had the privilege of meeting Robyn that day too and they seemed so happy together. Neil and my husband Ariel Lasry got on so well that day with common professional and personal interests via UJA/JIAS that they went for lunch soon after and of course broke bread like they had been old friends because again, it was that easy with him. Baruch Dayan Emeth. May his spirit and beautiful memory be a blessing.

Essie Vineberg - 20 days ago

Dear Richard, Brad, Grace, Jamie, Elissa, Rob, Mike and family, It's hard to even think of the words to say. While I haven't been in touch in recent years, Neil was always special to me. He was a special friend, mentor and role model to me. He was a true leader, full of charisma and passion. I will miss running into him and hearing him greet me as "Sprouty" loudly. If anyone else called me that, I would get annoyed. But not when Neil did! To me it was always a reminder of our Campus Campaign days. To all the family, I offer my deepest sympathies. I hope you all find comfort in your special memories of Neil, and in the legacy that he left behind. Neil will be deeply missed by all who knew hime.

Sue Carol Isaacson - 20 days ago

Dear Uditsky &Lifson families My heart goes out to all of you This is a difficult note to write . His endearing personality had everyone gravitate toward him and to know him was to love him . His death is a great loss to his children , to whom is was a special father , to his whole family , and to the Jewish Community in which he gave his all May his memory sustain his family and inspire us all

Rob Rosenblatt - 20 days ago

To Robyn and the Uditsky family - I only knew Neil for a little over a year but he always put a smile on my face after every encounter. He was that type of guy. Funny and witty and never taking himself too seriously. I had the pleasure of golfing with Neil a few weeks back and still laugh at his antics on the course. Bigger than life. Just one of those guys who made life a little better. My favorite line: Neil, do you know so and so? Neil's answer: "Maybe I do or maybe I don't. He will be sadly missed.

Michael Steinberg - 20 days ago

Dear Uditsky Family, My sincere condolences to the entire family. I am still in shock and saddened. Neil was a classmate of mine in high school. I am thankful that I was able to see him at our 25th reunion. I am so sorry for your loss. He will be missed. May his memory bring you comfort.

Esther Bing (Matthew Elms) - 20 days ago

Neil was my cousin, as I’m the eldest daughter of “Uncle Ron”. I remember Neil as “larger than life”. He worked hard and played hard. You always knew when he was “in the building”! It was surreal to hear Neil had passed always so suddenly without being able to say goodbye. My heart goes out to everyone who was close to him... Robyn and kids, Elissa, Brad, Grace, Jamie, my Uncle Richard and my cousins, Mike and Rob, as well as their families. We can’t be together physically at this time, which is so ironic, given Neil’s love of people. But at least we are together in spirit. Rest In Peace cousin Neil. ❤️

Dear Richard, Michael, Robert, Uditsky and Lifson families, Please accept our sincere condolences on the tragic and sudden passing of Neil. A family of new immigrants from the former Soviet Union, we came to Montreal in the early 90's. We were welcomed here so warmly by the Uditsky family, who helped us during every step of the transition and become our dear friends as we celebrated Jewish holidays in their beautiful home, where we met Neil. Neil was bright, supportive, energetic and enthusiastic. Always happy with his irresistible smile, finding a way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. Neil made a huge contribution to the Jewish community and will be sorely missed by his relatives, friends and the entire community. May all the beautiful memories of Neil and his accomplishments comfort you and help you through this difficult time. We are grieving with you with all our hearts. Natasha and Mark Smagorinski.

It is clear and confirmed by the tremendous outpouring of love that Neil was way beyond your average mensch. Some of these thoughts go back a while, but I remember plenty of enjoyable kibitzing; that he lifted spirits with his memorable smile and always created a great vibe when he was in the room. He embodied community sprint and made you feel you belonged to something special. Undoubtedly, he will be sorely missed. Neil was a giant of a man on so many levels. He had a unique ability to connect with people and to do the work that so many of us could only dream of being able to do. I had the pleasure of spending two years in the Wexner program with Neil and he personified that valuable lesson of Na'asseh v'nishmah, he would do and then ask questions later. I pray that the community supports you, his children, the way Neil supported our community. Baruch dayan emet.

Dear Uditsky Family, I was so shocked and extremely saddened to hear about Neil’s sudden passing! I have many Great and Fond memories of the times that we spent together at HIllsdale playing golf, on the board and most of all the fun that we had together at many of the parties! Neil was extremely smart, mature and hard working beyond his age! I always enjoyed the early morning phone conversations that we had while he was in the apparel business which always left me with a smile on my face and laughing. Neil’s laughter was infectious, his smile lit up a room and those are the things that I will always remember when I think of him! Dear Richard, Michael, Robert, and the entire family. I am totally shocked and devastated by Neil’s sudden passing. Your family has been our family for as long as I can remember and what I wouldn’t give to be back around your dining room table on Edgemore, circa 1980, with our two families intact and enjoying Canadian thanksgiving together. Neil’s humor, big personality and amazing warmth have always been infectious and he was the connective tissue for so many of us old family friends. I will really miss his annual missives... bragging about his three incredible kids and honoring Evy in such a beautiful way. My mom, Lisa and I are sending love and strength. You are all very much in our hearts... Cindy (Loo Loo)

His warm smile and zest for life are the qualities that I will always remember. He had such a special bond with my dad. My dad always loved his birthday because he knew that a some point in the day Neil would definitely show up to wish him a happy bday and give him a hug and a rub on his head. Neil was a passionate mensch. As this year's co-chair of the Toronto UJA campaign, he made my job easier every day, despite the continual threat of a global pandemic. He attended to every detail of our community needs with passion, commitment and a overriding need to make everyone feel that they were the most important person in the world while always keeping his focus on making our jewish community stronger. All I can say, is that our global jewish community is much weaker since Tuesday. The consummate sparkle in his eye and infectious smile never be forgotten.

His work with the Jewish community in Montreal and more recently in Toronto was outstanding and it's sad we'll more longer benefit from it. May his family be spared further sorrow and may they only experience joyous occasions.

Richard, Michael, Rob, Joni, Rudy...Grasshopper Lane was ours, as was Ogunquit Beach (and even to this day)! I have so many wonderful memories spent in the company of the Uditsky and Rutenberg families as a kid! I absolutely remember Neil's rocket of an arm, as we threw the baseball around with sand under our toes! To this day, I still have a picture saved on my phone of the 3 brothers and only my face, as they buried me alive at the beach...one of our many pastimes. "Caning" is another memory that has always stuck with me! Keep the memories of Neil close to all of your hearts and he will be with you forever! My sincerest of condolences! xo

Our most sincere sympathies during this extreme sorrow. It is impossible for us to feel how truly difficult it would be to lose someone so close, and at such a very young age. Neil was unique. Always positive. Always a smile. A community leader. Always vocal. A productive and intelligent young man. His passing is an enormous loss. We are certain that Neil will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Although it is impossible for us to feel the true extent of the loss that his many personal friends, and of course his family, are enduring, we are confident that he has left behind a thousand moments that will live in your hearts forever. May you all find peace and comfort; memories that are yours to cherish always; and, strength in the family and friendships of those who share this loss. May special blessings be with you and yours today and always.

Dear Uditsky Family, Our deepest condolences to you on your inconceivable loss. Neil's special gift of connecting with people is one that is embedded into the memories of those lucky enough to have crossed his path. His hugs and his smiles were like the man himself- big, warm and wholehearted. If you were on his team, you always knew he had your back. Whether that team was his family, friends, the greater Jewish community or on a baseball/softball field , there was no better teammate than Neil. A natural leader, he knew when the mood needed to be lightened or if somebody needed to be lifted up. When it came time to get things done, he was a doer. And when he got a hold of a ball, it was a beautiful sight. As you mourn his passing we hope you find strength in how much Neil meant to so many and the impact he made in his life.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the Uditsky Family and Elissa Lifson. I honestly didn’t know Neil very well but the few times we spoke, he always had a very inviting and friendly smile. Just last week I saw him as he was dropping off his kids and I noticed his license plate said 5142416. I asked him if that was a phone number and he replied “No. Montreal to Toronto “. We shared a laugh. When I heard of this tragic loss this morning, I was devastated and it really affected me a lot more than it should have for someone I barely knew. That is a testament to the kind of person he was. Much too young and very sad.

Dearest Richard, Mike, Robert and all the Uditsky, Lifson and Naiberg familiies, my sincerest, heartfelt condolences go out to you all at this tragic time. It is hard to find the right words to help relieve the profound grief you feel from this premature loss of Neil. Since I learned of Neil's death this morning, visions of him through our shared life's milestones from infancy to adulthood replay before my eyes. To those of us who knew him beyond that "larger than life "image he presented, we recognized that beneath it all was a man with an incredibly kind heart. That was the underpin that propelled him in his commitments to family, friends and his community. I like to believe that Neil will soon be with our beloved Evy once again. May you find strength in your memories. With all my love.

Dear Richard, Mike, and Robert, please accept my heartfelt sympathies and condolences on the tragic loss of Neil. I fondly remember the CJA campaign leadership retreat at CBB in the early 90’s, the first time we met. From that time I always considered him my “community son” and whenever or wherever we’d meet there was always a deep and meaningful hug. He will surely be remembered and by many with a fond smile and know our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family at this difficult time.

As I read through the comments, I'm equally in shock of Neil's passing, as I am in awe by the number of people he's touched in his time on this Earth. What a spirit, and a bottomless zest for living well. He was boisterous, shamelessly funny, and endearing in his frankness -- political correctness be damned! Neil, I'll miss doing l'chaims of scotch, in your office, and that wise relationship advice. I've thought a lot about our last conversation, and only wished we stayed connected, after your move. I love you and admire you, my friend. To Rob and your family: Please accept my deepest condolences. I'm so sorry for your loss. Neil's echo is a loud one, and it will live on in each of you. Dear Uditsky Family, We just wanted to express how sorry I was to learn about the shocking and untimely death of Neil. Such a bright light in so many ways. I wish there were these perfect words to say that could magically help ease the pain of such a significant loss, instead I find myself struggling to discover the appropriate sentiments that might help in some small and meaningful way. In the words of Morrie Schwartz (from Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Alboim) "As long as we can love each other and remember the love that we had, we can die without ever really going away. All the love that we shared is still there, all the memories are still there. They remain in the hearts of everyone we have touch and nurtured while we were alive...death ends a life, not a relationship" I know with all the love and support of so so many good friends and family, you will find your way through this. Our thoughts are with you, Fondly, Corrie & Andy
