Dear Aviel Family, We were saddened to hear about the passing of your dear Shimon ז״ל. We go back many years in our aquaintance with hוm as colleagues, first at Even Shmuel regional school (1971-72) and then for many years in Montreal. The many condolences from his numerous students is testimony to the powerful impact he had on almost two generations of Herzliah students and beyond. May you be comforted in them memories of the good times you shared with him and the love and appreciation of his students and colleagues. Moreh Aviel was an unforgettable part of my high school journey, and has personally influenced much of my growth. He was a humble, joyful, and passionate mentor, teacher, and friend. Moreh Aviel taught me so much, both personally and professionally, and was a constant source of support. Under his tireless dedication and mentorship, we travelled across North America and succeeded in halachic case competitions year after year. We shared unforgettable moments of laughter and joy, and have forged timeless memories. His perseverance, belief in students, passion, and commitment to success have empowered generations of students to thrive. Moreh Aviel always far exceeded his professional responsibilities, and nurtured a personable, warm, and protective touch for the students he was dedicated to. Throughout high school, Moreh Aviel was committed to developing my expressive voice, and always had a strong sense of reverence for my work and belief in my potential. I will forever cherish all that he has imparted on me. I owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for his timeless dedication to my success. To the Aviel family, this is an unimaginable loss, the weight of which is difficult to bear. I wish you much courage, faith, and strength in mourning his passing. I am confident our Moreh Aviel watches from above, and continues to live through the generations he has impacted. Thank you for everything, Moreh Aviel. We will continue to make you proud. Barouch Dayan Haemet.

My deepest sympathies to the family. I learned so much from Mr. Aviel as a student at Herzliah in the early 80s. He taught me to love the Hebrew language, and he was my inspirational mentor when I led school plays. I will never forget him. May his memory be a blessing. Baruch Dayan Emet.

Sending my deepest condolences to the Aviel family. I’ve been lucky enough to have Shimon as my agent for the past 2 years and throughout this time I have learnt so much . One of the most wonderful things about Shimon was that he always gave emerging artists a chance, a rare thing in this industry. So when he took a chance on me I felt incredibly grateful. He always took his time with each of his actors and truly cared for them. I feel SO LUCKY to have been mentored by someone who constantly encouraged me with inspiring words and stories. He truly believed in me and I am SO thankful. May his memory live on. - Erin Yardley-Jones

My condolences to the entire Aviel family. Moreh Aviel was my teacher for most of my time in high school. He was brilliant and interesting and would make every effort to teach us something new and different. However, when I think of Moreh Aviel, one of the things I most remember is how kind he was. I think he remains one of the kindest people I have ever met. May his memory be a blessing.

My sincerest condolences to the entire Aviel family. My fondest memories of Mar Aviel are not from the Stage but from my 1980s Talmud classes at Herzliah High School. He taught us how the Halacha was the first zoning board to require fencing around rooftop balconies among other pearls. I am forever in debt to 11th grade culminating project where he challenged us to compare a debate/framework as presented in the Talmud with the parallel concept in another religion. My kids love hearing the story of my effort at comparing reincarnation in the Jewish tradition with that in Hinduism...and how I had the chutzpah to then submit that essay to Princeton University. ברוך דין האמת. May his memory always be a blessing.

For those of us who were students at Herzliah in the '80s, Mr. Aviel was a central figure in our high school experience. We both had the great fortune to have him as a teacher, and to also work closely with him on many school plays and song festivals. He had deep impact on a generation of young Montrealers. May his memory be a blessing.

Our condolences on the loss of you husband, father and grandfather. I had the pleasure of having had Shimon as a teacher when he first came to Herzliah in the late 70’s. I also spent many hours working together on his shows even after graduating, and maintained contact for many years afterwards. I had the pleasure of having him recite Kiddush at our home after services on Rosh Hashanah for several years, and we got to enjoy his beautiful voice. About 40 years later, my son had the privilege of having Shimon as his teacher, so we both were able to benefit from his wit and good nature. BDE

To the Aviel family, my sincere condolences on the loss of a very gifted and special man. Mr Aviel was my teacher at Herzliah Snowdon many years ago. His classes were organized and structured, and I use the grammar lists he gave us to teach Hebrew grammar to my kids. He was best known for his contributions to drama, but the "rest of us," who were not involved in drama, also remember him well. I was glad to see that he enjoyed his grandchildren. המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים

This is so very sad and such a tremendous loss for the community. Shimon had a true passion for the craft of acting, and he could often be seen at theatre shows and class presentations looking for undiscovered talent. He gave so many of us our first chance in the industry, and his guidance was very precious to me. It was always great talking to him, and I always walked out of his office with a smile on my face. He had a very positive energy and a generous soul. Rest in peace, Shimon. Your time with us was too short, but you did a lot of good for a lot of people.

Dear Aviel Family, Please accept my deepest condolences. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have Shimon as an agent. In the years I have know him, he taught me so much. It was always such a privilege to receive a phone call from Shimon. He would make me laugh and he would always push me to do my best. I would like to send my love and condolences to Tova, Shira and the Aviel family, he will be missed.

Howie Silbiger - 10 days ago

I first met Shimon when he commandeered my office in the Herzliah High School library to isolate a group of students who were working on their strategy for Moot Beit Din. When I approached the office, Shimon, who was sitting in the library got up from his seat, walked over to me and told me I couldn’t go in. This was the genesis of a great friendship. Shimon and I spent hours talking about life, music, art, movies, theatre, Judaism, law and so many other things. When I was organizing Shabbatonim, Shimon, while waiting for his perpetually late Moot beit Din Students would pepper me with suggestions on where to take the students, on activities to plan that would be fun and educational and most importantly (at least to him!) theatre suggestions for Toronto and New York. After my departure from Herzliah, Shimon and I would occasionally run into each other, each time turning into a half hour conversation. He was easy to talk to and always had great advice and fun stories. The last time I saw Shimon was about a year ago in the Jewish General Hospital emergency waiting room. Tova had gotten sick and he was worried about her. We spoke for a while, she was called in and as he helped her go to the examination room, he turned around and wished me a refuah shlema. I really enjoyed talking with Shimon, his loss is great. May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion.

Dear Tova, Ayala, and family, I am so sad to hear of Shimon's passing. He was a big influence during my high school years at Herzliah High School. He was my teacher, my director, and always my friend. Song Festivals and musical shows, performing at Expo Theatre just to name a few. He was always ready to put on a show, giving so generously of his time. And he would drive groups of us home in his old Cadilac. After high school, I met up with him again in Beth Tikva Players 'Once Upon a Stage', and then founded a youth theatre at Adath Israel Synagogue. He then became involved with DWYT, where out paths continued to cross. You will truly be missed. Rena

I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Shimon. Every phone call we had was full of kindness, warmth and inspiration. Not only was he a hardworking agent, but also a caring friend. On Friday, we shared a conversation that touched me profoundly; he articulated how important my kindness project was to him, and implored me to continue my journey as an actress, but also- "change the world with kindness." Now today, shocked with the news of his passing; I'm taking his advice to heart. I'll carry his wise words of empathy with every endeavor I embark on; kindness and acting alike. My sincere condolences to the family, for he talked about you all so often; he was always a father before all else. Shimon, you created a community of artists that will love, and cherish you forever. Rest in peace you kind soul.

Dear Aviel family - I was student of Mr. Aviel's at Herzliah Saint Laurent. He inspired us to learn key Hebrew texts and always employed a dramatic flare. He worked with our then student council to produce and direct plays (dramas and musical theatre) and gave so much time and energy to his students. I am sure that his loss leaves you all with much sorrow but please know that there are many students who continue to be inspired by his teachings and love for Am Israel.

Dear Aviel family, It has been my honour to know Shimon Aviel as an educator for a decade. It is common among educators to teach students curricula, engage with them in learning and advance their knowledge in the disciplines of learning. But Shimon is not a common teacher. Shimon has demonstrated the capacity to teach students not the unit of study alone- but most importantly, how to think. This requires inductive and deductive reasoning, and an empathetic approach to students that simply sets him apart. Shimon has the ability to bring wisdom and love to texts and students. For this his students come away with the added gifts of an inspirational education and a model of inquiry based learning. Shimon brings with him the passion of an artist and the tools of a pedagogue. The world needs his uncommon presence. We are all at a great loss now. Baruch Dayan haemet

I cannot believe you're gone, dear Shimon. But yesterday, after hearing the sad news, I took a walk, looked up to the sky and took a deep breath... And yes, something was painfully missing. You have left us and the atmosphere will never feel the same again. I am so deeply thankful, Shimon. Thankful and so lucky I had the chance to learn with la crème de la crème of agents, the rare kind who's emails are worth being printed and pinned on my fridge as a daily reminder. Thank you Shimon, for always believing in me. To have encouraged, and tough loved and even told me off when need be. I only knew you a few years, yet you were such an important pillar in my life. Can't imagine how your daughter and wife must feel. Sending you so so much love Shimon, wherever you are now. שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָֽד

Dear Shimon, there are no words deep enough, warm enough or loving enough to express what a difference you made to me, and to so many others. My heart breaks at the thought of never hearing your voice on the other end of the line again - I left ever conversation feeling happier and warmer inside. Something about you, your realness, your passion, your wisdom and genuine caring left a mark every time we spoke. Thank you for everything, for caring, for believing in and pushing for me and so many artists. I will always remember nervously telling you I was pregnant and would be stepping back from acting for a while, and your beautiful response: "Tara, these are the beautiful moments in life. We will dance around this". And dance we did. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. As so many have already expressed, you were a true Mensch. I will miss you. Dear Tova, Shira, Ayala and all your family, my deepest condolences to your husband and father. We are wrapping you in love and warmth during this difficult time.

I was shocked and saddened to read of Shimon's passing. I first met Shimon during a parent interview night at Wagar high School. I was teaching his daughter Ayala at the time and during the interview Shimon asked me for some of the material I was using in Ayala's class. He impressed me as a serious educator who wanted to present his students at Herzliah with new material. Years later, I was principal of Herzliah High School (Beutel/St. Laurent campus) and Shimon was a member of the faculty teaching Drama in Hebrew. He taught his students various methods of expressing themselves using improvisations. This got the students to think. A worthy goal for any educator. My condolences to the family.

So devastated and heartbroken to hear yesterday of the sudden passing of dear Shimon. My deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. Shimon was the definition of a mensch... a man who acted with honour and dignity, who was kind and considerate, sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. He loved the theatre... could always be seen at every show. He loved his clients... would promote them fiercely. He was a mensch among mensches... a gutte neshuma... a good soul. He will be deeply missed by our community and those fortunate enough to have a little of his wisdom come their way. I feel blessed to have been one of those people, and these are some of the words he shared with me so very recently... “The world has changed. People don’t talk to each other. They message, they text, they Zoom. Every baby is born with a cellphone in his/her hand. At least in the performing arts we talk to each other, we look at one’s eyes and we can feel and care for each other.... We must give thanks for what we have. Not to be unhappy for what we don’t have. I hope you, and everyone who is dear to you, will survive this difficult period and will see the light coming closer to get all of us out of the miserable present. 💝 Faithfully, Shimon” May you Rest In Peace dear friend, May your memory be a blessing, and may those who were fortunate enough to know you, carry the torch of love and light that illuminated you. I have just got the news. I am so incredibly sad to read this. Shimon Aviel had a very big influence on my life. He taught me in high school over 40 years ago. I also had the pleasure of starring in 3 shows (2 of them in high school, one at a local synagogue). I did not even know what a stage was when I started. But he had a wonderful patience with me and drew me out more and more, allowing my confidence and my personality to grow. He was an exceptional teacher and director. But he was also a friend. The last time I saw him was at a high school reunion in 2016, 35 years later. He was the only teacher that made it a point to drop in. I had not seen him in many years but he was easily recognizable and I gave him a big hug. We reminisced for a few minutes about the old high school days. To this day, I still consider him a very important person in my life, even though I never became an actor.

Dear Tova, Shira, and Ayala, Through the years, I so much enjoyed visiting Shimon in his office. It was truly a pleasure to be assisted by a mensch whose advice to actors was always spot on. I have had a much more interesting life than I would otherwise have had thanks to the knowledge, skill, and good will of Shimon and the kind, well-informed assistance of Tova and Shira. I remember the fun I had at your wedding, Ayala. Please accept my sincere condolences for your great loss.

Shimon you will be missed by so many. I can’t believe that I’ll never hear your voice again on the phone. You had such a passion. For this industry & my God, you loved your work! I’ll never forget your response when I first saw Shira in the office so I asked if you were going to retire soon & you replied, “Who’s retiring? I’m not retiring” so I said, “Well, at some point you’ll retire, I mean it’s only natural” & you said, “No, that will not happen anytime soon.” That’s when I realized how much you loved & cared about your work. I so wish that you were still here Shimon. You were the only agent that went to every single local theatre performance. You adored every single part of this industry including the stressful parts. Thank you so much for being my agent, my supporter, your patience & your belief in me all these years. “All the best” to you Shimon. My deepest condolences to Shira, Ayala, Tova & the rest of the family 🙏🌹

It's with a heavy heart that Eloise and I say goodbye to Shimon, one of the most generous, loyal, talented and supportive artists, agents, and friends I have known. Our connection began with Shimon and Tova attending our many productions at Centaur and staying to chat and share his insights afterwards. Then later in my tenure he became my agent and was so up until the day he left us. Tova and family, may the memories of Shimon's remarkable life bring light into the darkness of your grief. He was a good and wise man. We'll miss him very much.

Shimon (or Mr. Aviel as I used to know him) was one of the most memorable teachers from my time at Herzliah. After years of knowing him as our drama teacher, he became our Talmud teacher, and turned that subject into a favourite for many of us. Very few of us in high school knew about his work as an agent. It was only 10 years after I graduated that an actor friend of mine mentioned that he was their agent. He positively impacted the lives of thousands across Montreal and beyond. May his memory be a blessing.

Dear Tova and family, Shimon’s passing is a great loss for all who knew him. We will feel it on opening nights when his usual seat is left empty, we will miss him at the Segal Centre. I’m thinking also of all the incredible young artists that Shimon mentored and encouraged- often being the first to see their potential and to champion them towards a career in the performing arts. Always warm and caring and hard working, I know the entire industry is shaken by his sudden passing which is a testament to the role he played in so many lives and the impact he made in our community. Our deepest condolences to the entire family. On behalf of the Segal Centre, thank you for giving us the opportunity to honour Shimon. We look forward to opening our doors again and celebrating his legacy with some of the things we know he loved- great theatre and fabulous actors, many of them your clients. May his memory forever be a blessing, baruch dayan emet

Dear Tova, Ayala, Shira and the rest of the Aviel family, my deepest condolences on this sad and sudden loss of Shimon. Such a sudden, sad and shocking loss. Shimon was my only agent.....he was the one who convinced me to even consider becoming a professional actor after a long business career. I thank him for his caring, his devotion to the art of acting, his mentorship and his belief in what he saw in me. I never would have enjoyed this "second career" I now have without his constant support, encouragement and hard work on my behalf. Thank you Shimon from the bottom of my heart, may you rest in peace and may your memory be a blessing to your family.♥️
