I am so shocked and saddened by Steve's passing.I was in his law class and we were rivals in academics- until he beat me, receiving the Gold Medal, graduating first in the class. We last met at our Law Reunion a year ago, laughed at our competition, agreed to meet in Toronto or Los Angeles for dinner. and began a correspondence. He was classy, smart, warm and utterly unique. I will miss him.

To the entire Heller family, We send our heartfelt condolences on the passing of Steve. Like others on this thread, we had a deep and meaningful history with Steve going back to our teenage years and lasting into grandparenthood. He leaves a powerful imprint on our memories and may you find comfort in your memories of him.

Monica Heller - 7 days ago

My deepest condolences to you all. Stephen had a special place in the heart of my father, Irving Heller, who was one of his older cousins; he took him to the park when he was little and watched him grow up with pride and pleasure.

Julian Heller - 7 days ago

My deepest sympathies to the whole family . My father Irving always introduced Stephen to me as his " kid cousin" . There was always great affection in the interaction. Sad to lose another Heller man . His brain power, sartorial attention, and love of baseball made Stephen a shining example of that group . Plus, he represented Rusty Staub -how cool was that !

LOST OPPORTUNITY and MEMORY: Lost Opportunity: -Never again being able to bait Steve by observing that any child could slash a band of paint across a canvas, so why would someone spend money on a Jack Bush?! Oh to have had a video camera for his ever-consistent reaction. -No longer deleting Steve's emails while hoping that he would finally come to realize that 'progressives' are (generally though not always) the hope for the future. If he didn't look so much like a Heller, I would swear he was adopted. -Not being there at Steve's arrival in heaven to see the ruckus he is going to create when he finds out there is no internet... and eventually understands never Trump, for the latter will ultimately reside FAR south of heaven. I confess I do smile thinking about how this bait will simply spark Steve to set up email from above just to try and set me straight. Perhaps it was always he who was baiting me... Memory: In 'Farthest Field: An Indian Story of the Second World War', Indian author Raghhu Karnad writes:"People have two deaths, the first at the end of their lives, when they go away, and the second at the end of the memory of their lives, when all who remember them are gone. Then a person quits the world completely." Steve's 'second' life is and will remain so vivid. Integrity, humour, legal brilliance, athletic skill, fascination with sports and a love for those close to his heart. May his memory be a blessing to us all. With love, Brian Heller

Sheila & Bobby Garfield - 8 days ago

Dear Arlene & Heller family The Garfield’s in Montreal send their condolences on the passing of Steve. We all remember Steve as a great baseball coach . He coached Mark & my son Warren plus a full team of kids to a championship. Steve was always very serious and I wondered how anyone younger than me could be so focused? Steve also worked for my Company & every time he told us to send money to the Government I used to ask him “Are you working for the Government or us”? He could always take a kibbitz. Steve leaves us all with pleasant memories. Love from the Garfield’s .

As the youngest daughter of the late Millie and Lew Lutter, lifelong friends of your parents, Sophie and Jack, I recall a few occasions when you and Steve would be visiting Montreal and we bumped into each other. We talked of each of our respective abd wonderful parents and their friendship. My Dad loved Morty and they would often see each other at the YMHA . I have no doubt Steve’s loss must be a devastating event for you , your children and grandchildren . I remember Steve as a handsome , fit , very bright guy with a wonderful dry sense of humour . Jane and Larry Plotnick - 11 days ago

Arlene and family, Our most sincere sympathies. Stephen had a long and noteworthy impact on our life going back to high school days. We saw each other infrequently but always had so much to talk about.. sports, politics, our careers, his move to Toronto, and of course, our respective art collections.Always positive. Always with a smile on his face. Always happy. The decades of thoughtful and pleasant conversations leaves us greater sadness in his passing. We are certain that Stephen will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him, as we treasure the many recollections of his friendship and life. We wish the family healing and the solace that comes from treasuring the gift of her life, the memories that make you smile, the strength in the friendships that share this loss, and the comfort with a love that is forever. May you all be spared further sorrow. Special blessings.

Heidi and Anita Lack - 11 days ago

Dear Heidi, Allen, Jeff, Cindy, Arlene, Mark, Robin and families, I am so sad to hear of the passing of Stephen. but what a wonderful obituary that fills in the generations of his vibrant life. Full of the work, joys, and legacies that connect him to the historical line of Hellers-our paths of which cross from the time of immigration. The collecting of and appreciating arts and antiques, the sports, finance, and love of the sun and of course, golf. I have never forgotten the opportunity to babysit 'the kids', one of my first jobs, when your aunt, the other Heidi, was unable. May you have many memories, and the eternal love to comfort you always as you reflect and support one another during this premature loss. And may you speak of him always with a smile and a twinkle. Sending Love and light, Heidi, Anita, and families.

Zavie Levine - 12 days ago

Dear Mark, Cindy, Robyn, Robert and Arlene Harriet and I were so deeply saddened by the loss of Steve. Our families go as far back as high school. We became very good friends at Mcgill, both in undergraduate school and particularly in Law. We ushered at each other`s weddings. We lived in the same apartment building in St. Laurent and took the same train to and from law school. Mark and Jeremy were born months apart and remain close friends to this day. Mark and Robbie, also good friends, live together at Woodfield. The families were that close. Unfortunately, Steve, Arlene, Harriet and I drifted apart and lost contact particularly after Steve and Arlene moved to Toronto. Steve will leave a very good legacy for his children and grandchildren. He was extremely intelligent and could talk knowledgeably about any subject. To all of Steve`s family, relish all the good memories as we will, and may he rest in peace forever. Harriet and Zavie

Dear Arlene and family. We are indeed sad to hear the news of Steve’passing. Since you came to Toronto we had the pleasure of good times together. His knowledge of Canadian art and his legal skills were evident to all. Our awareness of the sports business and US politics will never be the same! May you all know no further sorrows.
