Peter F. Trent - 23 days ago

I just learned that Dan is no longer among us. It came as a surprise, because to my way of thinking, a man like Dan should magically continue on this earth as long as the things of beauty he loved so much would last themselves. He lived for beauty; beauty kept him going. I remember, fifty years ago, buying objets d’art from Max, when Dan was still learning his trade. Afterwards, I would always seek out Dan’s shop when I wanted something for a special occasion. Other times, while walking along Sherbrooke, I’d simply drop in. Dan and I would talk while he proudly showed me his latest acquisitions. Rest in peace, my friend. Peter F. Trent, Westmount.

Dear Klein Family, My deepest condolences on the passing of Dan Klein, z'l. To walk into La Petite Musee was to walk into a world of history, and Dan, like his late father, Max Klein, z'l, made antiques come alive. My late mother Tova Alkallay, z'l, had many fascinating conversations with Max. I hope the shop they both cherished and treated like the jewel it is continue to thrive. May the many good memories you have of your father comfort you during these difficult days. May you and your family be spared any further sorrow. Rachel

Dear Family of Dan Klein, It is with sadness and regret that I learned of Dan's passing - regret that I haven't reconnected with him for many years, although the intention was always there to do so. We shared many escapades in our early twenties - I can still hear his mischievous laughter. In 1966 I found myself in Israel, with a letter of introduction to Dan's mother and the address of her Jerusalem antique shop - the cave of Ali Baba! When she learned that I was an emissary from her son, she closed her shop for the afternoon so that we wouldn't be interrupted and put out her famous sign: Back in 10 minutes - I hope - Rebecca. Dan always had a greeting for my mother as well, tapping on the window of the Petit Musee if he caught her passing by. Thank you for the memories Dan - and for those you have given your family and friends, xoxo Marilyn

Dan was so special and he and his father were an integral part of what made Montreal so special as a cultural and social centre. I met him shortly after he and his dad arrived and the memory of all their apartment contained, the books, the artifacts, the art is forever imprinted. It was always a special occasion to touch base with him over the years. What a loss. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Sandra Rafman

I had the immense privilège to work at Petit Musee as a personnel assistant for Mr. Klein for 12 years. He was my mentor professionally and in my personal Life; I am an antique dealer today because of him. Mr. Klein was a great man and I am the most grateful person having had the chance to work and learn with him for over a decade. My warm regards to Elana & Jeffrey. Simon Bergeron maison-bergeron.com

Dear Klein Family. I am saddened to read about your fathers passing. Dan and I have known each other for years. My wife and I were recently in the shop and bought a red coral necklace. Negotiating with him was an art. I dropped by quite often just to smooze. He was always positive and said business was great. He will be missed. May your family know no more sorrow. Irwin

I am saddened to learn of Dan's sudden passing. I worked at Petit Musée in the 1980s for Max and Dan, researching and writing appraisals of antiquities and objets d'art, serving Sachertorte delivered from Vienna to special clients. It was an education and a privilege. Dan was very kind to me on the many visits I made to see him on Sherbrooke Street, always taking an interest, sharing advice and showing me a new special precious treasure. I will miss him.

What terrible news we’ve received today, Dan was our very special friend , we loved to hear his stories of long ago and more recent, he taught us to better appreciate his wonderland of prized antiques. Our dinners, lunches and breakfasts were kaleidoscopes of conversations directed by this maven of many topics. May you find peace in remembering his unique person. Peggy and Gerry
