Morley and Chris Swan, and Judy Swan Knight - 22 days ago

Dear Carole, Please accept our condolences. My brother Morley sent this story. Norman, Richard Lord, and our brother, Richard, were about the same age and they all played hockey together at Westmount High. At the end of their high school years, Richard Lord and Norman went off to different American universities where they had won hockey scholarships. As fate would have it, they got to play against each other during the season. At Richard Lord's funeral a few years ago, they recounted Richie's remembrance of one game. He said that at the end of a play, as he raised his head, "the lights went out". When his great buddy helped peel him off the ice, Norman had a big smile on his face and laughed, "Sorry about that."

To Norman: It’s so sad to see you go. You leave us with our memories of you; of your smile and your wonderful, good nature. You made us feel special and loved. You showed us you cared. You were an original; there wasn’t anyone like you. You were funny, kind and told the best jokes. You loved a good bargain and when you found something you thought was great, you got so excited about it, you would buy 10 of it, because you wanted everyone to have one too. You were simply the best: the best father, the best grandfather, the best father in law and everyone’s best friend. Rest In Peace dearest Norman. ❤️

On behalf of McGill Athletics & Recreation, please accept our condolences. May you be spared from further sorrow. We have posted the following obit on our website: OBIT: Former McGill hockey player Norm Lupovich was 89 MONTREAL – Norm Lupovich, who played hockey for McGill University in the 1950s, passed away in Gibsons, B.C., on March 13. He was 89. The son of Florence and Moe Lupovich, he was born Norman Lewis Lupovich in Montreal on Aug. 8, 1931. His early education was at Westmount high school, where he captained the football team. After earning a hockey scholarship to the University of Denver in 1950-51, at the same time that future Alouettes quarterback Sam Etcheverry was playing for the Denver Pioneers. Lupovich, however, transferred to McGill the following year, where he skated for two seasons before earning a commerce degree in 1954. A multi-sport athlete, he was also on the McGill boxing team and the intermediate football squad. "Norman was a happy-go-lucky guy on the team but once the puck dropped, in a game or in practice, he was all business," recalled veteran broadcaster Dick Irvin, who was a teammate during both of Lupovich's seasons at McGill. "My main memory of him as a player was his intensity. He never stopped digging and never stopped skating." Under his grad photo in the 1954 Old McGill yearbook, he chose the expression: "Friendship can only exist between good men." After graduation, he operated a sporting goods business for over 40 years in the old Mount Royal Arena in Montreal. He loved sports, especially hockey, golf, cycling and swimming, but he was also an avid art collector, and loved jazz and big band music. A liberal and progressive thinker, he was renown for having a warm and young-at-heart personality, with a great sense of humour. Predeceased by his wife Ruth and brother Jack, he is survived by a sister (Carole), son (Stephen), daughter (Jane) and 11 grandchildren, in addition to an extended family in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and the United States. Due to the on-going pandemic, a private graveside funeral will be held in Montreal. Condolences may be left online. Dear Stevie and Janie, I knew your dad from the time he worked with my late father, Leonard, at Ideal Dress, over sixty years ago, When I was about ten, Normie would take me to his Sunday "old-timers" hockey games, letting me skate during the warm-up and between periods. He would skate up behind me, exhort me to skate harder and harder, then would explode by me with his powerful stride, which I would try to copy. I haven't seen your dad for many, many years, but I remember so well his athletic ability, his youthfulness, his smile, and his kindness. With my deepest condolences, Michael Rubin
