Robert Czerny - 25 days ago

Dear Stephen, I remember Walter with great fondness. My parents Egon and Winifred Czerny relied on him from quite early in his professional life (the mid 1950s, I think). When he came to our house, his warm personality and lovely Viennese accent made a strong impression on me. In the 90s, after Dad died and I started helping Mom with her financial affairs, I was impressed with the careful plans and management he had exercised. (Later you took over and I really appreciated your sound advice too.) In my mind I associate Walter strongly with my parents as people who kept some wonderful sensibilities of caring, courtesy and manners (and accents!) from a Mitteleuropa that also had its terrible darkness -- while succeeding in living exuberantly in their new homeland. He made the world a better place.

Dear Fischer family, Most of my more recent memories of Walter came through my Dad and all the stories he told about the great ski trips in Europe. It seemed as if those trips would never end. When I did bump into Walter, he was always very warm and engaging. My sincere condolences on your loss.

Stanley Kirsh - 25 days ago

Dear Stephen and Family, It has taken me a little time to fully absorb the news that Walter is gone. The man I knew for the past 30 plus years seemed indestructible. The first I visited their home, Stephen, (you were late arriving) there he was, larger than life, sporting a great big smile and a twinkle in his eye. He immediately opened his arms wide and welcomed me in, even though he did not know me from Adam, because, as your friend, he already considered me part of the family. That is just the kind of guy he was! It will never be the same without him, but please take comfort in knowing that he will forever be remembered fondly in all our hearts. Thinking of you at this difficult time Love, Stanley & Family

Walter was my father's very good friend. As children, we don't often pay attention to our parents' friends. But I remember my father speaking fondly of Walter, bar mitzvahs, weddings, good things... After my father passed away, I got to know Walter personally as a friend and a mentor. Maurice and I will truly miss our great conversations with Walter. To Anita, Bruce, Lorraine, and Stephen, and all your families, our very sincere and deepest condolences on the loss of this lovely person.

Let me join Barry and Fran's lovely sentiment of condolences. I have many delightful memories of Mr. Fischer coming to our house and all of us going downstairs to discuss business. Mr Fischer was always the epitome of clam and had a European air of discrete civility. He was a wonderful presence of kindness in our family and I will always remember Walters's laugh. My heart goes out to the family.

Larry Jacobson - 26 days ago

Dear Lorraine, Marc, and Fischer family, I was saddened to hear of your father’s passing. I have fond memories when I would see him during a bus commute to work. We would talk shop (accounting) but also about family and politics. He was always entertaining and had a wry sense of humour. Even when he put a person down, like myself, he would have a glint in his eyes, letting on he wanted to have some fun. He had such pride in his family (deservedly so). I share your sadness. So sad to read about Walter’s death. I worked for him in 1974. I share a story about my 1st meeting with him. I was interviewing with his accounting firm and had prepared my resume with everything I had done in my short 18 month career out of college. Walter joined the interview and after looking at my resume asked me how long I was working as an accountant. I proudly said 18 months. He laughed and said. It’s taken me 20 years to do all this. And with that, he hired me. It was an honor working for him. He taught me everything that wasn’t on my resume. RIP Mr. Fischer.

Our sincere heartfelt condolences on the loss of Walter. He was a towering figure, a trusted advisor and friend to my parents and myself who shared his wisdom like it was basic common sense. My father still tells the story of when he wanted announce his retirement, Walter advised him not to, otherwise my father’s only client at the time would not pay a large receivable owed if they knew my father was retiring. My father waited, kept his intentions quite, finally collected his outstanding bill, then closed shop and retired. The client went bust a few months later.

To all of the Fischers: My sympathies to your whole family. You will always be my neighbors of the Briardale street neighborhood. Countless mornings I walked over two houses to the Fischer's house so that Lorraine and I could walk to West Hill High School. Anita assured that Lorraine was ready to leave the house. She would holler up the nearby set of stairs. Looorrrrraaaaiiinnneeee! Walter was outside, getting his car ready, shovelling snow or insisting his kids do it! He was organized, head strong and always greeted me politely. I was always welcome at the Fischer household. This family is a devoted one and protect one another. Admirable traits, and clearly modeled by the Fischer parents. I will remember always, skiing with you all, having meals in your kitchen on Briardale, hanging out on the private balcony above the yard. Lorraine and her parents were one of those alternate families to go to when you wanted to be somewhere else other than your own home. You have been a wonderful daughter to your pop, Lorraine. Your love and caring is exceptional and with full committment. Walter will certainly be missed, but well remembered.

MARTIN SURKIS - 27 days ago

Dear Fischer family. Please accept my sincerest condolences on Walter's passing. Walter was the partner of the late Maurice A. Miller and the late Haskel Blauer in the partnership called Miller, Blazer and Fischer Charteted Accountants. Walter was a huge influence in my life. I remember the day when he called me into his office and asked me the following question. "Marty" he asked "do you want to be a good Chartered Accountant?". When I replied yes, he said " to be a good Chartered Accountant, you first need to be a good bookkeeper". He then took me under his wing, sending me out to his numerous accounts who relied upon him for bookkeeping and auditing services. I will never forget his words and advice. At the time I was a senior in his offices and went on to become a C.A. two years later. Walter was a mench. He was kind caring and understanding. It is now almost fifty five years later and I still am thankful for his caring and concern. May your happy memories help console you and may Walter rest in peace.
