Dear Eugene, Sima, and Family, My deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved father, father-in-law and grandfather, Arthur Schwartz, z'l. Arthur was a delightful, spirited character. His upbeat personality belied the tragedies and hardships he had survived. A lovely man to be around. Though it has been many years since we last saw one another, I remember him well at the dinner table, when he and my mother entertained each other with stories of life in Europe. He will be missed. May you and your family be spared any further sorrow. Rachel

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Arthur Schwartz, Holocaust survivor and volunteer Museum speaker. Arthur was passionate about Holocaust education and dedicated many years of his life to sharing his testimony with Museum visitors of all ages and backgrounds. He was born in 1923 in Kosice, Slovakia and was the eldest of two brothers and two sisters. In early 1944, Arthur was drafted into a forced labour battalion of the Hungarian army. When the German army invaded Hungary, Arthur and his family were forced into the town’s ghetto. In May 1944, Arthur was separated from his family. During the brutal winter months, Arthur and his unit were forced to perform grueling labour outdoors. As the Soviet army approached, the prisoners were forced on a death march to the Austrian border. The Soviet army liberated Arthur in April 1945 in Sopron, Hungary. He later learned that his two sisters had survived, but his brother, parents, and grandmother had been murdered in Auschwitz. Through the assistance and resourcefulness of his brother-in-law, Arthur managed to come to Montreal on the War Orphans Project in 1948. The testimonies of survivors like Arthur constitute a precious legacy and represent extraordinary lessons of resilience. Arthur’s story will live on through the countless young people he inspired at the Museum and the thousands of people around the world who continue to https://museeholocauste.ca/en/survivors-stories/arthur-schwartz/. Just last year, Arthur’s remarkable life story and precious family photo were featured in the award-winning virtual exhibit https://witnessestohistory.museeholocauste.ca/explore-all-portraits/arthur-schwartz-a-unifying-photomontage/ The Board of Directors, volunteers, and professional team extend their sincere condolences to Arthur’s children, Eugene and Gloria, and to his grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. May his memory always be for a blessing, Richard Schnurbach, President, and Daniel Amar, Executive Director.
