Heidi Barkun - about 8 hours ago

My deepest sympathies on the passing of this extraordinary man. I am a visual artist and I had the pleasure of creating an artwork for the Avmor collection in 1999. It was the first commissioned artwork I had ever created, and I remember bringing it into the Avmor offices and having Mr. Morrow tell me that it was the most unusual work in the collection. He told me that while every artist regardless of notoriety receives the same amount, in my case he would make an exception and put a little on the cheque. I have no idea whether he said that often or never before, nor it didn't matter. I will never forget his generosity and the confidence he helped to instill in my younger self as I embarked in the world of art. May his memory be a blessing.

Celia Brickman - about 11 hours ago

Dear Juli and Dora, My deepest sympathy and sincere condolences for your loss. What an exceptionally kind, generous and fun-loving man Avi was! Many years ago, your home was a haven for me as a teenager, and I was delighted, decades later, to learn what a generous and avid supporter of the arts he was, funding scholarships at Concordia University’s Department of Fine Arts. When searching for a venue to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday, it was suggested to me that I contact him: he instantly remembered me after a 40-year hiatus, and without hesitation made his unique and beautiful gallery in Old Montreal available to us for our landmark event. It is wonderful to learn of all the ways in which he helped so many people over the years– truly an open-hearted life well-lived.

Riva Fenster - about 14 hours ago

Dear Dora and family of Avi, A true mensch, Avi was a great supporter of our seniors at the craft centre at the former Golden Age( Cummings centre) We so appreciated his generosity in the arts. Together, with his support, we created and published a book of art by our senior artists for the millennium . As well, he hosted a vernissage for our artists with a meaningful 5 a 7 at his gallery. May you be comforted by your many cherished memories and may he Rest In Peace, Riva and Roger Fenster

Rachel Alkallay - 7 days ago

Dear Dora, Julie, Arthur, Rebecca, Molly and Family, Sharing in your sorrow on the passing of your beloved husband of 71! years, father, father-in-law and grandfather, Avi Morrow, z'l. " A friend tells you that you have lipstick on your teeth." That was one of Avi's favourite quotes, and one that I tell people to remind them that a real friend tells you when you are screwing up your life - and I always credit Avi with the saying. Avi had a fund of these marvellous, self-inspired quotes which he generously passed onto people. He didn't need to say much; one sharp observation or a single wise comment could clarify a seemingly complicated situation. He said it like it is and suffered no pretensions from others. His yearly gift of Passover horseradish was a highlight of the holiday. An original who was a philanthropist without seeking the glory; a man who truly enjoyed helping others. His museum is a testament to how he helped support artists, and to his quirky collections. The twinkle in his eye will be missed; so will his wisdom. May the many years of happy memories you have of him comfort you during these difficult days. May you and your family be spared any further sorrow. Rachel

זכר צדיק לברכה Mr. Bikeman taught us all life lessons we will never forget. His generosity was equal only to his humility. His just works will continue to resonate in every heart that was gladdened by this righteous man. Mr. Bikeman was a light unto the nations . He made the world a better place. Thank you. May his family continue to live as he did, and may the memories of this unique man sustain them through their mourning.

Deborah Levine - 7 days ago

With sadness I read of the passing of Avrum. My Father, Seymour Levine was a classmate of Avrum's at Baron Byng, and then at McGill School of Engineering. Their friendship spanned close to 90 years. My Father died in October 2018. Over the years my father shared Avrum's art books with me, always so proud of his friend. The Levine family were "receivers" of the Passover Chrain. My father couldn't wait to share with me the artwork on the bottles, or the tube of packaging all important to the Chrain and of course the Passover greetings. I am so sorry for your loss.

On behalf of all the kids - 8 days ago

To the family of "Bikeman", I grew up reading in the Gazette about his good deeds year after year, always wondering who the anonymous donor was. I knew it had to be someone extremely special, to give so much joy to so many & not want the recognition & honour in return. After all these years, it is time to say "Thank you Mr Morrow for giving so many underprivileged children something that hopefully brought them as much joy as it brought you when you were a kid". To Mr Morrow's family, may you be comforted by the thoughts of the huge positive impact his actions have had on so many people. Barouh Dayan Haemet, may his Neshama have a complete aliyah.

Dear Mattie and family, my sincere condolences on your loss. He truly was a great person and a real mensch of a follow. Every time we saw each other he had a story and it was always interesting and had real meaning. I remember well when he gave me a tour of his art gallery in Old Montreal. And those Passover sedars were special with the Chrain delivered to the door. May he rest in peace and may the family be spared of any future sorrow

Gary Bernstein - 8 days ago

Avi pulled the same five dollar stunt with me after I had promised to donate some McGill memorabilia to his museum. He ripped the bill in half and gave me half, put the other half in his desk drawer. He taped them together when I returned with the museum artifacts. Truly a nice and generous man. He donated the use of his museum so that I could throw a graduation reception for my daughter. So thoughtful.

Stanley Diamond - 8 days ago

Dear Dora and Family: As the last of his generation in our extended family, Avi carried the torch of Menschkeit with grace and purpose. His parents Bertha and Ruby of blessed memory, their siblings and the entire clan can only look on with pride and wonder at Avi’s legacy. There is no doubt that he inherited and more than exemplified the kindness and deeds for which his legendary great-grandmother Basham Miriam was well known. Those of us who knew the stories behind the outward appearances can only marvel at the dedication Avi had to make a difference in this world and the manner and dignity in which he embraced tikkun olam. May you and the family take comfort from Avi’s legacy and may you have no further sorrows.

My sympathies to the family of Avi Morrow on the passing of a great man. "Mr. Morrow" was a touchstone for me for almost 40 years. He was the rarest of individuals; an eccentric and a role model. He was what we all aspire to but what few can achieve. He was occasionally gruff and always droll. He was as generous as he was demanding. More than anything, "Mr. Morrow" was the consummate mensch. I am very grateful to have known him.

We met at a JGH reception man years, we started talking about art and fundraising. He took out a $5 bill tore it in half and told me to bring one half and come and see his art collection at his place of work. We spent two hours taking about art and philanthropy. At the end he asked me to offer him one non-profit that is relatively obscure that he could support. He was not full of pretension but genuinely believed in helping people. Before I left he taped the $5 and told me to offer it to the first person that put his/her hand out. I will never forget that day nor Mr. Morrow's kindness and generosity. My sincere condolences to his family. Montreal has lost one of its finest.
