Dear Rhoda, so sorry to hear from a former Nortel colleague about the loss of Bert. I worked with Bert in the early 90s when I travelled often from Toronto to work with the Quebec sales office. One fond memory was when you and Bert joined my future wife and I at the time on one of John O’s Labor Day canoe trips (this one in Algonquin Park). May he rest in eternal peace.

Dear Rhoda, I just heard from a former colleague at Nortel of the sad passing of Bert. Bert was one of my early bosses at the company and such a great person. While we lost contact I have several wonderful memories. He introduced me to the off-the-beaten-path films at the Montreal International film festival, the joy of fountain pens (with copper ink) which I still use today :) and his wonderful advice on wine. I think one of my early assignments with him was putting his wine collection into excel :). A true Gentleman's Gentleman he will be missed, but I am truly fortunate to have known him.

The world has lost a bright spirit with Bert's passing, and to his family my deepest condolences. Bert was a friend and colleague at Nortel when, along with his dedicated work, there were fun times to be cherished like sales conferences in Montebello and dinners in Montreal where we relied on Bert's wine savvy for the right selection and his wit for many laughs. He will be missed but not forgotten by those whose lives Bert influenced.

Dear Habert Family Bert was a good friend and neighbor in Northmount, classmate in McGill, a frequent doubles tennis partner and a fierce squash opponent in our marathon two hour sessions, which continued even after grad school. Bert was an usher at my wedding. He had an amazing demeanour and an incredible memory. Over the years we lost touch. The last time I saw him was at our 25 year reunion, which of course he organized. Hoped to see him when he organized the 50th this year, but the fates unfortunately intervened. Sad. He was one of the good ones.

Dear Rhoda, my sincerest condolences on Bert's passing. He and I had been friends since high school days and were classmates in McGill Engineering. We both learned how to play bridge at Rhoda’s knee in an epic learning session during the great Montreal snow storm of 1971 when she said “I’ve got you now – you can’t escape”. We played nonstop for 24 hours and caught the bridge bug. For some reason we were fascinated by the first convention we ever learned – Fishbein! Bert and I continued as occasional partners for many years. He was one of the brightest and cheeriest guys I’ve ever known. Without skipping a beat he would recall my parents' telephone number, Klaire and my St. Laurent telephone number and our address in DDO. Today he would be called Mr. Google. I can still see his wonderful smile as he extended his arm in his signature backhand handshake. The last time I saw him was just before his diagnosis when we shared a wonderful Rib’n Reef dinner, indulging in a great martini, a juicy steak and delicious Caesar salad, accompanied by a bottle of vintage wine selected by none other than Bert, the skillful connoisseur. We vowed to make this an annual event but sadly, he never got to enjoy a redux of that moment. May he live on through our cherished memories of him.

Dear Rhoda We are shocked and greatly saddened by the news of Bert's passing. Of all the people in the bridge world, Bert stood out as a smiling, fun-loving, talented person. I still remember our early day dinners with Bert's award winning salad dressing! Although we have lost touch, we will miss him and cherish our good memories.

Dear Rhoda, Bert and I spent five wonderful years together at McGill. We were inseparable and I was happy to have been part of his life's journey. Throughout these years I was always awed by his incredible memory, his joie de vivre, and by how he was able to breeze through every course at McGill effortlessly. I lost contact with Bert after I moved away to Toronto, but we got together many years later during one of my trips to Montreal and, Bert being Bert, he delighted in telling me the number of the license plate of my the car I had in Montreal, and the number of my McGill ID card. Lynda and I are sorry for your loss yet relieved that his suffering has ended.

Dear Rhoda, We are so sad to hear that Bert has left us. What wonderful times we all shared together, the travels to many new lands because of our world championship bridge experiences, and how proud he was of your accomplishments , in those glorious days gone by. Hang on to your fabulous memories, we had a good run, we were so blessed. Bert loved you fiercely, and not many people have ever been loved liked that, you were given a real gift G-d bless you dear, and give you peace. Barbara and David Saltsman.

Rhoda, Only really got to know Bert recently when we played bridge. We shared so many laughs and it was truly an honour to play with him. He outclassed me in every aspect of the game but had this unique humility of making me feel special when it was always him that was the special one. I will miss him and today the world seems that bit darker
