To the Bonder family: I was very sad to learn about your father’s passing. As a teenager, my friends and I loved visiting Bonder’s Books on Bernard. We would go simply to chat with your dad — about life, politics and sometimes even books! He inspired us with a thirst to know the world beyond our limited horizons and profoundly enriched our lives. His gift lives on in us to this day. Deepest condolences, Wanda

Dear Family of Mr. Bonder, Please accept my sincere condolences on your sad family loss. My late father used to bring me to Bonder’s Bookstore as a young boy many decades ago. My weekly visits to the bookstore were always part of my life while growing up in Outremont and had a marked impact on my future career. Mr. Bonder was a very good, kind and wonderful man with a gentle soul. Always with a ready and reassuring smile and willingness to answer questions, he was truly unforgettable. I will always be grateful to him and will always remember the impact he had on my life! May He Rest in Peace! Dr. Denis Caro

To the Bonder Family: I knew Mr.Bonder, though not that well, from the days when he ran the book store (s) on Bernard. He was always polite, kind, and helpful when I needed a book for my courses.Always had a good word for everyone. My late mom,Mrs. Eva Frajberg, knew him better and she used to go the store as much to talk to him as to buy her books. She used to spend hours discussing things with him-and yes buying books too.She always spoke of him with the highest regard-as did everyone else I knew.He was an institution in the neighborhood! On behalf of myself and my family,I offer the entire Bonder family my sympathies on on the loss of this kind and wonderful man.He was a mensch! (Mr.)Laine Frajberg

Dear Shelly and Eli, We were sorry to hear about Abe Bonder's passing. He was a kind man. I came into his bookstore almost every day on my way home from high school. He let me browse even though he knew I had no money. He even let me buy a book by paying him a little every week. And I never forgot that he let me take the book home before it was paid for. One of Nature's true genlle men. May you know no more sorrow. Gloria and Labe Brumer

Mes plus sincères condoléances à la famille de Monsieur Bonder. De dix à vingt et un an, Monsiuer Bonder m'a accompagné dans ma découverte de la littérature anglaise. It is so strange how synchronicity can guide you. I am in a process of writing a novel about a character who is influenced by Mister Bonder, to whom I wanted to pay homage. I have not met Mister Bonder for at least twenty years. In the process of checking if the name was Bonder or Bonders (with a possibility that my memory registered a ‘s, here I am today randomly checking for a confirmation, sent on the West island, suddenly omitting the word library for a simple Bonder Outremont: and there, shocked to see that Mister Bonder who introduces me to american and british and yiddish authors just passed away. His photo although of a man older than the figure I had in my mind has not lost a bit oh his goodness as well as sense of aptitude for humour. Although this story might seem of little wigth compared to the grief family and close friends surely feel, I think it points to your father and friend’ influence, to be added to the numerous testimonies that precedes this one. Be assured that Mister Bonder has a place in my life such taht something of his love of books continue to pass through. Again I offer my deepest condolances to members of his family and friends. ========================================

I too grew up in Outremont and remember with fondness hours browsing and calculating what book my allowance might buy. Mr Bonder never shooed me out, he was very understanding and occasionally offered a discount to match my funds. Rest In Peace Mr Bonder.

I grew up in Outremont, a few blocks from Bonders’ on Bernard. I would drop after school sometimes.I remember visiting the store with my mother when she wanted to buy a special birthday present for my brother, the inetellectual. He was twelve at the time. Your father knew his clientele by name, even the kids. When my mother questioned his suggestion of a book by Aldous Huxley; his reply “Hendrik, oh, this is not too advanced for him.” He was right. I remember your father with fondness. He was a kind, gentle man. My sincere condolences.

Having come in 1977 to work with Friends of Pioneering Israel, I found I found the Bonders always willing to host meetings in their home on Marcil, and to promote the ideals of Socialist-Zionism which are still relevant.

As soon as I saw the picture I knew who it was. I lived a half block away, and do now, in fact. I bought all my TinTin books from him, and my Ray Bradbury collection too. My first political science book, in a way. the Iron Heel, by Jack London. He was a gentle, patient man, and you were fortunate to have him as a father.

Dear Bonder family, I last saw Abe a year and a half ago, when I was moving David Zacharin, my brother-in-law, and everyone's dentist, into the Vista ,reuniting them as neighbours again as they where on Bernard. I worked for David for 5 years and would be in the bookstore many times a week. Then as now, some 60 years later, I could not remember the titles of the books I had read. Abe let me start them and if read, I could return them. Always a joy to see him and Sala. My condolences to the family on the loss of a very kind man. Goldie Kaplansky Warshawsky

Dear Family Bonder I am one of those youngsters who at 10 used my gift money during the year, bought books. I was kindly advised by Mr. Bonder what kind of book I am interested in. After some discussion, he said biographies are interesting because it gives knowledge of a famous person & what they have contributed. Till today this is my favorite category. I still have those books - Signature series - Helen Keller, Christopher Columbus, Clara Barton... Over the years I did stop in to the shop & buy books for my son's. 4 years ago I moved to Jerusalem, I took the books with me so my grandchildren can enjoy them Mr. Bonder was a smiling & soft spoken gentleman, enjoyed being an owner of a bookshop. May your memories comfort you during this difficult time.

I have vivid and warm recollections of Abe Bonder, who was a volunteer at the then-Canadian Jewish Congress Archives for many years. He has left his mark on the the numerous collections he handled here with his characteristic intellectual enthusiasm and attention to detail. It was always such a pleasure to spend time with him; I recall his gripping stories about his experiences as a soldier in Europe and as a pioneer in Israel, and I remember his devotion to his late wife Sala and his pride in the accomplishments of his children. I am so sorry for your loss.
