1968 or /69. I’m covering 2nd base and a line drive is hit right at me. I jump and reach full height and catch the ball. As I get back to the dugout, coach Ben Meltzer whacks me on the shoulder and exclaims ”Way to go! Our own little Felix Millan here”. That was the very first thing I thought the instant I saw Ben’s name here. Imagine someone affecting your life so much that 50+ years later you still remember one little remark they made when you were 7 or 8 years old? THAT was Ben Meltzer! I liked Ben before that, and I have loved and looked up to him ever since. He was a fantastic coach – full of praise and encouragement. And he was a fantastic person. A mentsch among mortals. Shirley, Michael, Donald, et al, I will miss your husband/dad very much. He was truly special. If anyone ever radiated warmth and caring, it was him. My sincerest condolences to all of you. Bryan

My sincere condolences to the Meltzer family. I have a distant, but vivid memory of Ben showing me his tropical fish collection when I was a little boy, more than 50 years ago. He patiently explained each of the fish and then let me feed them. Ben smiled generously as I tried (and failed!) to repeat the names of all the varieties in the huge tank he had. It was a wonderful experience. The following year I got a few tropical fish of my own.
