I remember her vibrance and energy during March of the Living 20 years ago. She has made it a lifelong mission to ignite sparks of Judaism everywhere she went - a beautiful legacy. I'm very touched to hear the news, extending her family and friends my sincerest sympathies.

Dear Pesi, Arlazar, Joey, and Family, I am so so saddened to hear of your beloved Hannah Eliashiv's, z'l, untimely passing. A lovely, kind woman with a ready smile. Always optimistic. I knew her through the years, and particularly after interviewing her parents for the Shoah Foundation. The family was optimistic and full of life and laughter, with a great sense of humour. The last we saw each other was at Federation in 2019; she was in a wheelchair, and with her characteristic optimism, she smiled off the situation: it was temporary. Hannah was not the kind to put people in down mood. She will be missed. May the many memories you have of her, and the contributions she made to our community, give you comfort during these difficult days. May you and your family be spared any further sorrow. Rachel Alkallay

I was so saddened to hear of Hannah's passing. I was one of her students at Bialik, and look back with great fondness on my regular interactions with her. She was one of the few teachers who I could talk to about anything. We had a lot of great conversations that have left an impression on me to this day....lots of lessons about life, and lots of wisdom. She taught me to love Judaism, to care about community, and to always always strive to be a mentsh - respect teachers and respect students. She had to be tough, but her tactics were effective. And the more I got to know her, the more I discovered her great sense of humor and her huge heart. Our wonderful Geveret Eliashiv turned our school into a home, and we mourn for the loss of our matriarch, along with you. Her memory endures as a blessing.

Dear Arlazar, Eliashiv and Zelikovic families. I read through these myriad heartfelt condolences each of which capture how I feel about Hanna. They are a true testament to Hanna who touched everyone with whom she came into contact, including me. Her humble, self-effacing manner and sense of humour made her an even more effective educator. I hope the memories will give you much comfort.

I was both shocked and saddened to be told of Hannah's passing early Friday afternoon. As a volunteer at Mount Sinai, I saw her practically every day, as she was so devoted to her lovely mother Pesi, with whom I practiced my Hebrew on a daily basis. As a co-member of the Mount Sinai Users Committee, she was always pro-active towards the residents welfare. Her Friday afternoon Oneg Shabbat Divrei Torah's were eagerly anticipated by the residents who gathered on the 4th floor to hear her beautiful renditions of stories from the "Old Country", always delivered in a manner that EVERYONE understood. It was a shock to open the computer on motsa'ei shabbat to learn of Hanna's untimely passing. She was one of the first people I met on arriving in Montreal, to assume my position in Herzliah. I remember her assistance, such as arranging orientation sessions to Montreal, guidance in the old "pedagogical library," or finding a family to sublet our apartment during our year sabbatical in Jerusalem. A tremendous loss for the Jewish community of Montreal, and for Jewish education. It was an honour to have known her, and to have worked with her. תנחומים לארלזר, לתלמידי היקר יואל, ולכל המשפחה תהי נשמתה צרורה בצרור החיים

Dear Arlazar and family, Irwin and I heard with great sadness about the passing of Hannah. Hannah was a unique person , with a total commitment to every thing she undertook to do, as an educator, as a community leader and as a friend. Hannah was a quintessential Educator par excellence, on her we say ”העמידה תלמידים הרבה״ She changed the lives of thousands of Montreal students, including our own children, instilling in them her love for Jewish learning and for Israel. There was no community event involving Israel, Holocaust education or Jewish Education that Hannah did not leave her indelible mark on. We will all miss her. Dear Tamar and family, what a shock. Over the last 2 decades on the board of JNF I would see Chana-she rarely missed a meeting or a party. She always asked after my children who were her students at Bialik, always had a pertinent comment, sage advice and a wry wit.Always the educator - I will never forget how she addressed the new board members telling them that the JNF blue box was not ‘tzedakah’ rather we were becoming partners in Israel. Her love of education was only surpassed by her love of Israel. May her memory be a blessing. Wendy Spatzner Sent from my iPad

Dear Zelikovic and Eliashiv Families, We extend our condolences and sympathies on this sad occasion. Our family and the Zelikovic Family go back a few generations, to the good old days of Montreal Leather. Throughout the years I heard of Hanna's impressive accomplishments in the field of education. She was a positive force for good in whatever endeavor she undertook. Her smile was always welcoming. I was so very shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Hanna Eliashiv. An ardent Judaic studies teacher at Bialik High School for many years, she was a mentor to many and a true friend. She was extremely committed to Jewish education in all its forms and languages and in particular the Shoah. As a co-chair of the Kristhallnacht Remembrance Committee, she invited the Bialik Yiddish and its alumni to sing at the remembrance evenings, and the Yiddish choir, including so many who graduated Bialik years earlier always came back to sing . Just a couple of weeks ago many in the choir called me and expressed their disappointment and sadness at not being able to perform during this pandemic year. The many assemblies, our trip to Jewish New York with the Yiddish department and so many much more, too numerous to mention will be with me forever. To Arlazar, with whom I often worked and her children who I taught, I extend my heartfelt condolences. May the wonderful and many memories sustain you at this difficult and may her memory be for a blessing. She will surely be missed by all who knew her.

Dear Arlazar and family, I extend my sincere condolences on the passing away of Chana. She set for herself two great challenges: to advance Jewish education and Holocaust commemoration in our city. I especially remember her joy in Yiddish culture , in attending Yiddish Theatre and her pride when she watched Tamar perform in No More Raisins, No More Almonds about a ghetto during the Holocaust. May the memories of her warmth and accomplishments bring you solace at this difficult time.

Hanna was a wonderful teacher to us at Herzliah High School (where a great pleasure was her Jewish Cooking class) and she remained a warm and loving person for many years whenever we would meet. I am so sorry to learn of her passing and I'll remember her always. Manny

To Arlazar and the Eliashiv and Zelicovic families, With shock and deep sadness I learned of Hanna’s passing and extend to you my sincerest sympathies. Hanna and I were colleagues, friend and volunteers together for more than 40 years. She was so creative in developing programs and ideas and so warm-hearted. She cared about the individual and her energies were spent in making the world a better place. Hanna lived the Jewish values she taught and promoted: she was the “ real deal”, no affectation nor hubris. To me she was the face of Jewish and Holocaust education in Montreal and I bet that if you look up the term “Jewish education” in Roget’s Thesaurus, you’ll find the name of Hanna Eliashiv as a synonym. May you find peace in knowing that Hanna will not be forgotten. Yvonne Bensimom

Dear Pesi, Arlazar, and the whole family - no words can express the shock and dismay at the too-early passing of a wonderful, dedicated woman. I met Hanna in 1965 when we were both students at the Jewish Teachers' Seminary, on the 4th floor (walk-up) of the Shaare Zion Synagogue. We kept each other sane and we laughed at the same situations. Hanna went on to become one of the best educators in Montreal - it was her essence. As was her pride in her family and the accomplishments of each person, younger and older. Difficult situations only made her more determined to contribute all she could - and thus she became an example for us all. May her memory inspire us to never give up, and may her memory be a blessing. Rivka

My dear Tamar, May you and your family find the strength to overcome this most painful loss in your lives. To you, Tamar, I can only say that I am still and will be for some time, not just devastated and shocked, but in pain over the loss of your dear Mom, way too soon, a friend and mentor to so many! Whatever I may say, you already know. Hanna was an exceptional, one-of-a-kind most loving and loveable human being. No adjective seems adequate enough to describe her, always full of good cheer and humour, extreme generosity and affection truly felt by one and all. A beautiful and cheerful presence in the lives of those who knew her. I particularly miss Hanna’s regular presence even after volunteering at Mt.Sinai hospital was no longer possible due to the pandemic, through chatty phone calls with frequent references to the game of Jeopardy and ending with a cheerful “Shabbat Shalom” - the last one just over two weeks ago.... I must admit, Tamar, it will take me along time to accept that our dear Hanna (or as I used to call her affectionately Hanicka - the Czech equivalent) is no more. May her existence on this Earth remain a blessing on all those who loved and cherished her!

Arlazar, Yoey, Ozzy and Tamar: My sincere condolences on the passing of Hanna. It always seemed natural that she would play the many roles that she did in the community, school and beyond. I have particular fond memories of being on a bus with her as we were accompanying students to Washington. The bus got stranded for sixteen hours in an April snow storm in the Poconos. Hanna's genius as an educator prevailed there as she used every trick in the book to keep the group, cheerful, amused and safe. I remember running into her in Jerusalem and what a happy surprise that was. In my early years of teaching, she shepherded me and so many others in dealing with the challenges of teaching Judaic studies. The memories of her larger than life reputation have long been cemented. May time dull the pain of loss. Jeff

Montreal Holocaust Museum - 15 days ago

Dear Arlazar and Family, We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend Hanna Eliashiv. Hanna was an outstanding and committed volunteer and member of the Museum family. Over the last decade, she acted as co-chair of the Remembrance Committee and the Kristallnacht Commemoration Committee, as well as a former Board member. Her remarkable leadership and determination played a profound role in shaping how our Museum commemorates the Shoah today. Hanna’s lifelong dedication to education about Jewish history, culture, and the Holocaust has impacted countless young people and members of the public. Her meaningful involvement in diverse aspects of Jewish life speaks to her incredible talent, intelligence, and extraordinary loyalty to our community. As the daughter of survivors, Hanna understood the importance of Holocaust remembrance from an early age. For her, it was especially important that the voices of survivors and their personal stories remain at the heart of all educational and commemorative efforts. She was immensely caring for the survivors with whom she worked, and she was gifted at making others feel heard and respected. Hanna’s presence will be deeply missed at the Montreal Holocaust Museum. Her strength and impact will never be forgotten. The Board of Directors, volunteers, and professional team extend their sincere condolences to her family during this difficult time. May her memory be a blessing. Richard Schnurbach, President and Daniel Amar, Executive Director
