She was a pillar of Yiddishkeit at JPPS, her entire being was brimming with love for her students and teaching by example of how to be a true Mentsch. I have such fond memories of this special lady. Shirley touched so many lives during her Wednesday afternoons volunteering at Auberge Shalom. She would come to play with the children, but so often the moms would stay as she was so welcoming. Shirley seemed to bring out the best in everyone. As Child Care Worker I learned so much from Shirley. I will always hold special memories of our time together in my heart. I hope all the family find comforted knowing that their loved one lived life sharing her love and kindness whole heartedly.

I was extremely sad to hear about Shirley’s passing. Lererin Soreh was my Yiddish teacher in Grade 1 at JPPS, and I still remember her as one of the earliest and biggest influences on the direction my life would take. Of course she taught Yiddish, which I still speak over 30 years later. But more importantly, she taught kindness and empathy. Even at that young age, she taught us about social issues and social justice. I ran into her a few years ago and I’m glad I took the opportunity then to tell her about the huge impact she had had on my life all those years ago. I’m sure you know that she loved her students, but I hope you know that we loved her too, and her memory will live on in us.

Shirley was and always will be loved, admired by many. Our boys were fortunate to have Shirley as their Yiddish teacher at JPPS. They immediately gravitated to her warm smile, loving nature, and enthusiasm for life. Shirley also worked as the Arts and Craft director at the YCC. Her enthusiasm once again was witnessed by all who came in contact with her. Her program was quite unique at the time as she introduced beautiful junk to the staff and children (recyclable materials )and all had a whole lot of fun making art. Shirley was the epitome of kindness, sincerity, patience.... She was tireless when she had a job to do. And what ever she did, she put her all into it. We are so very sorry for your loss. She will be remembered by many as she left an incredible impression on all of us. H

Dear Family, I knew Shirley from around 35 years ago at YCC, where she taught A&C, I was the Camp Office Manager, and we shared adjacent rooms in the Summit Girls Rec Hall. She was a lovely and warm-person and I enjoyed her company very much. It was wonderful watching her in action in 'her' art room with the campers as I had been an A&C specialist in day camps some years previously and liked to drop in there. May your memories of her love and her life well-lived sustain you at this difficult time.

To the family of Shirley Nozetz, Shirley was my art teacher at the Y Country Camp (YCC) in 1984 when I was 9 years old. It was my first summer away from home. My mother, who was also named Shirley, was undergoing chemo treatments for breast cancer, and I being still quite young was obviously quite effected by what was going on back in Montreal. Shirley helped me to better cope with what I was feeling by helping me to create various art projects, which included a very thoughtful card for my mother. Her presence in the Arts & Crafts cabin, and the patience and kindness that she showed to be at a time when I most definitely needed it/that left a strong impression on my young heart and mind. It was only years later, when I met her in the Snowdon area where she was by then living, that we made the connection that we had been neighbours on Abbott (we lived close to the bend where Abbott crossed with Major). May her memory be a blessing for all of you that knew and loved her. Ira Salman

To Shirley’s family, I had the privilege of working with Shirley at JPPS and was witness to her incredible love for her students and her subject.
