Dear Jodi and Sari, Our heartfelt condolences to you and to your whole family on the loss of your dear father. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this very difficult time.

The Harkin family, Ireland - about 18 hours ago

Dear Phyllis, Jodi, Sari and family We were so saddened to hear of Ian’s death and especially during this difficult environment we’re living through. Ian was one of those people who had such a large presence and personality, that you couldn’t contemplate life without him. I first met Ian in France during a visit to Mary (my sister) and Mitchell. He was taken with my Irish accent and wanted nothing better than to be entertained by asking me to repeat certain words. I was not amused and told him if he wanted to be entertained, then he could pay for it. Great start! I’m sure Ian was highly amused. Ian and Phyllis welcomed the Harkin family into their lives, and treated us like their extended family. The welcome I received on each visit was immense, not to mention their kind treatment of my son, Davin, who spent a year in McGill. Jesse kindly showed Davin around the city, brought him out socially, and I could go on and on. We always felt welcome and we so appreciated it – the love Mitchell and Mary had for each other certainly brought both families together in a good way. It is cruel irony that the family of a man such as Ian who was so respected and admired in the community and throughout were denied the act of celebrating his life through normal religious and social rituals. In normal times, we come together for the ‘removal’, we shake hands, we hug, we eat, we drink, we sing, we cry and we remember. But these are not usual times. We are living through a time in which no one will have the collective grief or the funerals they deserve — neither the dead nor the living. Families across the world will have to carry their loss within themselves. You are all in our thoughts and prayers, and thank you for extending an invite to your Shiva calls – this is greatly appreciated by my mother and her family. Love Margie x

My most sincere and heartfelt sympathies to you Phyllis and all your family. I have such pleasant memories of the times Ian and I played bridge together. He was so happy playing. As well, Ian and you were always so kind and generous to me and my family. I remember when we visited you in Ste-Agathe and the nice gatherings we had in Montreal. I will miss Ian. He was a great friend. He was and will always be an inspiration to me...

He sometimes kept a low profile but very alert of everything going on. Mr. Karper was an excellent Leader in this world - we are all blessed to have met him. RIP

Dear Phyllis & Family, I was so sad to learn of Ian’s sudden passing. During my tenure at the Y, I fondly remember taking minutes at countless early morning meetings of the Executive and Board; he was a cherished member of the group. It was my relationship with Ian and others that made my work at the Y so meaningful and rewarding. Those memories hold a special place in my heart. Ian was the lifeblood of the Y. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. May cherished memories of Ian be a blessing to you during this difficult time.

Dear Phyllis,Jodi, Martin, Sari, Jordie, Joy, RIchard and families This is truly a tragedy. The loss of a wonderful husband, father, community person and a great friend. Ian was my mentor at the Y. He was the one who trained me and insisted I become the first female president of the Y. Ian did not take no for an answer. He loved the Y, the camp and all community organizations. They all benefitted from his determination, and his wisdom. We have wonderful memories of times in Ste. Agathe with all of you. Being his friend was a real honour for us. Ian will be missed by all who knew whom. Much love Doreen and Gerald

Dear Phyllis, Jodi and Martin, Sari and Jordie, Jesse and Madison, Maya and Jonah and all the family, We are so sad to learn of the passing of Ian. He was a true gentleman and a leader both in industry and community. Having both worked in community for over 40 years, Lawrence and I got to know Ian well. To know him was to learn from him, to admire him, and to appreciate him. Phyllis I always smiled seeing you together, never imagining one without the other. Ian will live on in you and your children and grandchildren and will be part of your lives forever. Sari, getting to know you, doing a project with you, knowing your work ethic and humor, never left me doubting that you were Phyllis and Ian's daughter, a smile, a pleasure and kind! Lawrence and I hope you're all spared further sorrow. I will miss seeing Ian's magnetic smile and his arm on my shoulder when we saw each other so often at the Y. His Legacy will live on and the pride you feel will live on from one-in-a-million Ian. Sincerely Caryl & Lawrence

Dear Phyllis and Family, Irwin and I were truly saddened to learn of Ian's passing. I first met Ian in 1987 when we both sat on the board of the YM-YWHA country camp when Michael Crelinsten was the camp director. Ian would pick me up in his amazing sports car to go to the meetings. We met you quite often at the Beth El Shule and in Ste Agathe where you spent time at your cottage. A bonding experience that we had was at the 1998 March of the Living. We grieved together in Poland and rejoiced in Israel. My memories of Ian are vivid. We hope that you will find comfort in the virtual surrounding and support of family and friends and that you will find solace in the many memories you have of him. Fondly , Freda

Max Adelson - 3 days ago

For Ian, My cherished, beloved and incredibly generous uncle. I'll always fondly remember times with Uncle Ian at Fernlea, Meritt and Ste Agathe for family events. One thing (among many) Ian was excellent at was his sense of humour dealing with his two Adelson brother-in-laws. I recall him describing Sheldon and Ronnie as very similar in personality and it was clear because "they averaged two wives each". Over the years the warmth that Aunty Phyllis and Uncle Ian have showed me serves as an example for how I'd like to live my life. I am lucky and proud to have had such an honourable man as my uncle and sad to see him leave us. Aunty Phyllis, Jodi, Sari, Martin, Jordi, Maya, Jonah, Jesse and Madison I am thinking of you and wish I could be there with you now. Love, Max

Dear Phyllis, Jodi Sari Joy, Rick, and Family , I never believed that I would be writing a condolence letter to you all for Ian. The last few days, I tried to process and focus on the beautiful times we spent together as friends and family. From our first trip to Israel where we met, to Australia and Papua New Guinea to bonfires and chip wagons in Ste Agathe. Jodi and Sari formed a bond with our family, and they stayed with us while you went house hunting in Ste Agathe, where we spent our time having fun, and watching our families grow. We enjoyed listening to your Mitchell telling us about his life and travels. Our kitchen bridge games in Boca, to bridge on a blanket in Tanglewood, and Sunday runs and brunches. We shared simchas and tragedies, breakfasts, golf, fishing, and bike trips. These are the memories that I believe we want to keep and think about. RIP Gloria and Herb

Dear Phyllis and Family I joined the Y to rehabilitate a bad back over 15 years ago. My first day there I ended up lying on my back stretching beside Ian. After some kibitzing and joking we formally introduced ourselves. Week after week we saw each other on the mat at the Y. We became friends, then good friends, then Ian became my mentor as I got more involved at the Y and community. His warmth, keen sense of humour, his kindness, love of the Y and commitment to the Jewish community was and continues to be a great inspiration to me. We will miss him very much. Our prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. Rick & Anne (Wajcer) Rubin

I’ve only known one Expos fan with greater passion, especially 30 years later. I have great memories of sitting with Ian in his seats on the third baseline, going to spring training in WPB or beating the speed record from Ste Agathe to TMR in a certain mustard race car. When I was younger, Ian gave me a signed autographed pic of my favorite ball player, only to find out 30 years later that it was signed by...him!! Thanks for the memories, I loved and respected him like a friend, a role model and a wonderful Zaida. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all of you who admired and loved this very special man, especially to Phyllis, Jodi, Sari and the entire family. We love you very much, Lara, Cliff, Kayla, Sisi and Ella

Dear Phyllis and Family. I knew Ian most of my life. Our mothers were friends . I still recall attending his Bar Mitzvah in St. Agathe Over the years Ian and I shared many occasions together, both happy and sad. We had many mutual friends, and enjoyed many of the same activities, as well as some business connections. Ian was successful at everything he did including business, community activities, or as a husband, father and grandfather. Ian's passing has left a great vacuum in all our lives which can never be filled. May you and your family be free from any further sorrow.

Dear Phyllis , Jodi, Sari and family. I first met the Karper family in the summer of 1979. Mitch was my bunkmate at YCC ( Jodi and Sari were campers ) and Mitch invited me to spend days off at the house in Ste Agathe. I so clearly recall the warmth and welcome that Ian and Phyllis provided. The same warmth and welcome that Ian exhibited whenever you met him. I had the great fortune of seeing Ian and feeling that warmth on many different occasions. Most recently , I had had the priviledge of serving with Ian on committees at the Y . No one cared more deeply about the Y and no one had greater appreciation for the importance of the community that is the Y . Ian will be greatly missed by so many people . My deepest sympathies

Ian, you will always be the quintessential "Y guy." I remember you smiling when I recently referred to you as a legend. Well, you are, and; legends never die. Dear Phyllis, Jodi , Sari, Joy, Richard, and families Please know that we are thinking of you at this terrible time and send you our deepest condolences. What a tragedy. Ian fought so long and so hard to beat so many health issues. His attitude and strength were amazing and certainly would have brought down a lessor man. Ian was a community person and gave so much of his time to support many causes- The Y , Federation, and Beth Tikvah just to name a few. Pearl and I have been friends with Ian and Phyllis for over 40 years. Ian and I have been playing poker every week , Ian and I went on golf and fishing trips and Vegas and Atlantic City trips, and the four of us have travelled together to many different destinations. We shared Bat Mitzvahs with our daughters, and we danced at each of our children's weddings. Ian can't be replaced. He was a true mensch, a giver, who enjoyed life and was a fantastic husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. Montreal has lost one of the great ones. Rest in peace our friend.

When I think of uncle Ian, I will always picture him smiling, asking “how are you?” and never forgetting to remind me that Montreal is the world’s greatest city. Among his jokes that MTL is home to incomparable bagels and smoke meat, he truly made the city a better place with his philanthropy and commitment to the community. To me, uncle Ian was so special because he took the time to help in any way he could. He is the reason I was able to attend YCC, a camp which changed my life and gave me lifelong friends in Montreal ans the among reasons I went to McGill. Every Jewish holiday was better because of the happy celebrations at Uncle Ian and Aunty Phyllis’s house in TMR. I remember him touring us around the Adorible Junior factory when I was just 4-years-old and letting me pick a coat - it was my forever favourite. To his beloved.... Aunty Phyllis, my heart breaks that your beloved has passed during this untimely period of history. You were an incredible team - having lots of fun in great times, staying by each other and and approaching your challenges. Please know that your marriage leaves a strong legacy and that has encouraged me to be as good a wife to Spencer as you were to Ian. Jodi and Sari, what can I possibly say to convey my sympathies? You two bare so many resemblances to your dad - in terms of of family commitment, love and of course, making sure to celebrate the happy times with laughter. It was clear to me even as a youngster that you dad loved you both so much, which is one of the reasons I look up to both of you to this day. To Rick, Joy, Madison, Jesse, Jonah, Maya, Martin, Jordy and everyone else who was able to proudly call Ian a sibling/Zaida/father-in-law and more, my sincere thoughts go out to you right now. With all our love, Erica and Spencer

Peter Kalichman and Lori Weitzman - 6 days ago

Dear Phyllis, Jodi, Sari and the extended Karper family. When I first met Ian over thirty years ago, he was more than a little intimidating. Already a legend in the Jewish community and the Y, in particular, he cast a long shadow. When we had our first disagreement around a boardroom table (the first of many), I was struck by two things. The first was that when Ian felt strongly about something, as he often did, he did not mince words. His voice thundered and his passion was palpable. The second occurred a few minutes later as we shifted to another topic. Ian stood up, walked behind my chair and planted a kiss on my head. Throughout the many years since then, I cannot remember a single time that I saw Ian when I was not greeted by his beautiful smile and his questions about me, Lori, our growing family and our careers. He wasn’t just asking, he was genuinely interested. I always had the strong impression that Ian was proud of me and that meant the world to me. It still does. Even though we were of a different generation, we were friends and I will miss him terribly. You have our deepest sympathies on the loss of a true giant of a man. Peter and Lori.

Martin Surkis - 6 days ago

Dear Phyllis and family. It is with a heavy heart to learn of Ian's passing. Ian was exceptional. He was a leader among men, smart, talented and a mench's mench. From the earier days at Beth Tikvah through the years we worked together at the YM-YWHA and especially YCC, he was a person to look up to. His efforts at the YCC resulted in many success stories. He was instrumental in assisting me (then Chairman) in making the Huberdome a reality out of a dream. He greased the wheels to ensure the speediest approvals needed to start and complete the process in lightspeed time. Ian would not take no for an answer when he knew it was the wrong thing to do. When budgetary restrictions were about to limit the number of tennis courts to only three, he worked tirelessly with me and my associate, the late Frank Pogato (vice president of Mondev International Ltd), in both finding the right contractor who then built the four courts for the price of three. Not only were they built, but they were built right, without cracking for more than thirty years. Ian was very special. He worked well with all our volunteer leaders on the various boards to which he was a member. He had a great disposition and always did his very best on behalf of whatever organizations fortunate enough to benefit from his endevours. He will be sorely missed. May your memories bring you comfort and may he rest forever in peace. Condolences. Martin Surkis

Louis and Karen Grossbaum - 6 days ago

Phyliss, Jodi , Sari and family both Karen and I are deeply saddened on Ian’s most unfortunate passing this evening. What a great guy your husband, father, father-in -law and grandfather was. No one was more devoted to community then our friend Ian and no one was near to him in his ability to raise funds for the Y that he truly loved being a part of. He was President, he chaired every possible event and he did it with such zest that it totally inspired us to join his team and raise funds like he did. Ian was a fierce competitor in all he did. He hated to lose and that is why he excelled at what he undertook including the competitive bridge games. We are truly going to miss him and miss the many opportunities we had to have a good kibbutz when we saw each other. A true mensch and a real good friend who inspired others. May the whole family be spared of any future sorrow and Rest In Peace our dear friend. Unfortunately for all of us gone but you will never be forgotten Your Good Friends——Karen and Louis

Dear Karper Family, I am so saddened to hear about Ian's passing. I have so many amazing memories of fun times together which began in the summer of '81 during a mission to Israel. Growing up, Ian was my second father and admired friend. Fishing, frog hunting, test driving his latest roadster, and softball games were always memorable. Ian's larger than life personality made him fun to be around in any situation. Ian's philanthropy, community involvement and business success will always inspire me. Ian is now reunited with his beloved Mitchell. Each of you and Ian are in my heart and prayers, Love Mitch (or as Ian called me Mitchaleh)
