Bev, Carl, David, Aunty Rozy: Uncle Joe was a huge part of my childhood and beyond, spending time at the country especially. I remember him sitting and eating mangoes when no one knew about mangoes. I also remember that, even as a teen and young adult, we'd have real conversations - he always made you feel like you were important and he'd be focused and interested in whatever I had to say. Mostly I remember him being a gentle soul with a huge heart, and, as everyone else has said, a true mensch. I am grateful we got to see him a few weeks ago on Zoom for David's birthday. He will be missed. xoxoxo

Bev and all of Joe’s family: We are profoundly saddened by the passing of our dear friend. Despite all the setbacks and hurdles he faced during the last year he never complained and always displayed an optimistic and positive outlook. Just days before his passing he again was praising the staff, service and treatment at St. Mary’s and the wonderful support and love being constantly demonstrated by his loving wife. Joe will always be remembered as one of those very rare persons about whom one could never utter a bad word; he was just such a good person. To the whole family, remember all the good times which you had together. We too will focus on the trips together, the hiking up north, golfing , dinners and of course the great conversations. We will miss his smiles and chuckles dearly and let us hope that in his new place he will have an ample supply of his favourite black licorice. Fondly, Michael & Cindy

Bev, Carl and David I am truly shocked and stunned by Joe’s death. I spoke to him last week, and, not surprisingly, he was upbeat about leaving the hospital and getting together for lunch when the Covid restrictions ended. Joe and I became friends through our respective professional practises and had monthly lunch meetings, golf games and I became a regular at his poker game for many years. Nothing but sweet memories as Joe always looked at the bright side and you couldn’t help but smile when you were in his company. I will miss Joe but I can only imagine what it means to you Bev, who was his rock of strength for many years. Also, My thoughts are with Carl and David and the grandkids as Joe was truly one of a kind. May you be spared further sorrow

Shaken by the loss of "Mr. Joe." There is only one Joe. Consummate gentleman. Steady sterling professional with the highest integrity handily creating diamonds under pressure. Patient guide through choppy waters. Father. Grandfather. Husband. Gibbys regular. Trusted fun ever-optimistic friend. I was blessed to have gotten so much of the best of Joe and his beloved Bevvy. Rest in Peace. I adore you and am grateful you are free of suffering. "When it all went down And the pain came through I get it now i was there for you... I see my life In full review It was never me It was always you You sent me here You sent me there Breaking things I can't repair Making objects Out of thoughts Making more By thinking not Eating food And drinking wine A body that I thought was mine..." Dear Bev, Joe’s children, and grandchildren, Reading the words of sympathy written by so many of Joe’s friends will give you an insight of what a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend Joe was. For the past year or more when Joe was battling this devastating disease we spoke two and more times weekly. He was the most positive, bravest man that I have ever met. Praising his nurses, doctors, for their exceptional care, Bev being by his side, children’s visits and the trips he was looking forward to take with his family and friends...”when he got out of here”. Though our conversations will be gone forever, we and all who knew him will never forget him. Hoping your fond memories will sustain you during these sad and difficult times. Rest In Peace my friend. Fondly shelley & Herb

To the entire Schlesinger family, How very sad to hear of Joe's passing. He was at JPPS ,the old Folk Shule on Waverly, at the same time I was. Joe remained, throughout his life, the pleasant, positive person, he was from a very young age. Joe was always ready to help, and was one of the most patient people i know, and one who never complained. His loss is felt by such a large number of people, but it is most difficult for you, his close family, whom he loved so much. May all your good memories sustain you at this most difficult time.
