Dear Linda and family, It is with great sadness that I have learned of Earl’s passing. Earl was my colleague for many years, a mentor and a valued friend. He was a man of remarkable intelligence, deep knowledge, great integrity, generosity and culture, and he had no age. He loved his family and demonstrated the highest human qualities and values in every circumstance. I am grateful for having had the immense chance of knowing him and having been able to learn so much from him in the legal profession. My sincere condolences to you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you in these difficult times.

Dear Cohen family, I was very sad to hear about Earl's passing. I first met Earl as a summer student at Mendelsohn and got to know him quite well during my 9 years at Mendelsohn/McMillan. He was an exceptional lawyer and a great mentor. He was a friend to all the young lawyers. His calm, patient demeanor was inspirational. I consulted him on many occasions on various aspects of the law, usually at the end of the day, with his classical music playing in the background. We would also often walk together in the evening to the same parking lot and have great discussions along the way. I cherish these memories. I recently had a meeting at his current firm and allotted an extra 15 minutes because I was planning on popping into his office to say hi, but unfortunately he wasn't there on that particular day. Know that he had a great influence on so many lawyers at Mendelsohn, and elsewhere, and that he holds a special place in their hearts. I hope that a lifetime of your own memories will offer some comfort for your pain during this difficult time. John

Dear Linda, Terri and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Earl's passing. I fondly remember when we were both 10 and attended Camp Cayuga. I went through law school with Earl, who was in the top 15% of the class each year. Earl was, to my mind and to all the "guys", the best president who ever held the position at Elm Ridge. He was such a hard worker, while always remaining calm, cool, and collected. He very much enjoyed being part of our Tuesday golf group, and we all delighted in playing with him. We will sorely miss him. Allan and Terri

I knew Earl from McGill Law School. Although he was a year behind me, we were in the same Bar Admission class because I took a year off to study in Paris. Linda, you probably don't remember that day in 1966 when Marsha and I bumped into you and Earl on the Champs Elysées! I had not seen him since the early 1970s when we moved to Ottawa, but I remember him as a very nice guy. I am sorry to learn of his passing.

Dear Cohen Family, I was very sad to learn of Earl's passing this morning. Earl was a great lawyer, a true gentleman and a kind and thoughtful person. I remember my interview with Earl as a course aux stages candidate as though it was yesterday. Even though I was beyond nervous, Earl made me feel as though we were equals and that I had as much to bring to the conversation as he did. I will always be grateful and humbled by that experience. It was an absolute privilege to have met Earl and then to have had the opportunity to work with him. He was a true model of wisdom and integrity. Sincere condolences for your loss.

John Wiseman - 5 days ago

I was privileged that Earl occupied the office next to mine. I always knew when he was present because of the beautiful, low volume (Earle was always considerate), classical music wafting from his office. Whenever you approached him he was always warm and welcoming and when asked for his opinion he would preface it with “I probably don’t know any more than you do”.......of course he did; but humility was, but, one of his many great qualities. He was witty, heart full, appropriate, the consummate professional, unassuming, accomplished in many areas of life......a true “renaissance man”, and always generous with his time and knowledge. He has been (for the last year) and will continue to be sorely missed. R.I.P Earl. John

Dear Linda, Catherine, Matthew and families, We were so sorry to hear the sad news about Earl’s sudden passing. Earl has played a central role in my dad’s life since well before I was born, and I grew up inspired by the length and depth of their friendship. When I heard my dad say “Myeeeez” (sp??) on the phone, I immediately knew who he was speaking with! We always knew that the Cohens were not just friends, they were family. And although I am less in touch with you now than I was when I was a kid, I know that still to be the case. Our families have shared so many happy, and less happy, times together. When I became a lawyer, Earl was always so kind and supportive. It was always great running into him at Lord Reading and other such meetings. Over the years he always treated me like a valued colleague. I’m sorry that we are unable to come express our condolences in person. We are thinking of you and sending you big (virtual hugs). Max Mendelsohn - 5 days ago

Dear Cohen family, I was shocked and saddened to read of Earl’s sudden and untimely death. Earl was first and foremost a mensch. He was also a lawyer with a high degree of integrity, professionalism and skill. Earl’s partners and clients, held him in the highest esteem, as did whoever else had the good fortune to deal with him. One would be hard- pressed to conjure up anything negative they had heard about Earl. It is also difficult to come up with the appropriate words to adequately express what a good guy he was. However inadequate, a few of them are the following; great friend and partner; low key, friendly and straight shooting. Earl’s passing is a great loss to not only to his family, but also to his wide circle of friends and professional colleagues. Please accept my sincerest sympathies. May the family be spared further sorrow.

Linda and family I usually, ( as you know) can always find the words but this time I am struggling. I knew Earl from the time I moved to Roslyn. I lived on Bonavista and he was on Victoria. He was a year older. He was a quiet guy. I was(am) a big mouth. Through grade school, Junior high , Westmount high and McGill we were friends. Though opposites in a lot of ways we stayed friends and he was my lawyer for a long time. He was a good golfer, me not so much. I will miss him terribly but cherish the wonderful memories of dinners, golf and especially the golf trips with "da boys". Love Cynthia and Kenny
