Ellen Steinhart (née Rost)

With great courage and dignity on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at the remarkable age of 105. Cherished wife of the late Gerald Steinhart for 43 years. Step- mother and special friend of Sheila Lackman and the late Phillip, Brenda and Sorin Gluck of Toronto. Proud grandmother of Jodi and Felice Lackman, Barbara, Rebecca and David Gluck and great grandmother of 15. Special aunt of Mark, Earl and Brian Steinhart.

Born in Berlin, Germany in 1920 to the late Julius and the late Ernestine Rost and moved to England in 1936 where she was a nanny, then studied nursing. She pursued her career in Edmonton, in Montreal at the ER of the Jewish General Hospital and later in life, in New York State.

Ellen was a master scrabble player and made the most delicious trifles out of a cake that flopped. She always acknowledged all family members birthdays with a home designed card which she made with love. For special occasions she would write masterful poems and give meaningful speeches.

Our deepest gratitude is extended to her most devoted caregivers, Tess, Nicole, Yolanda and Anne who enabled Ellen to enjoy a quality of life she deserved.

Enormous gratitude to Phil Coombe for his over 40 years of friendship, devotion, guidance and kindness, always thinking of Ellen and Gerald’s best interests, considering them as family.

Funeral service from Paperman and Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W., on Sunday, December 7th at 10:00 a.m.  Burial at Gan Shalom Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O.
