Helga Ehrmann Loevinsohn passed away on Friday, December 26, 2025, peacefully, in her sleep. Two days earlier, she celebrated her 101st birthday surrounded by family and her devoted care team, more alert and responsive than she had been for months – an inestimable gift.
A survivor of the Holocaust, she was brought to safety by the Kindertransport. Together with her husband, the late Walter, a fellow refugee from Nazi Germany, whom she met in England, she was a lifelong supporter of refugees who struggled to come to Canada from wherever. They were both critical Zionists and strong supporters of a just peace in Israel-Palestine.
She continually sought what was meaningful and expected of her children that they do no less. In whatever pursuit, Helga persevered: she continued to place one foot in front of the other even as she complained she could go no further.
Helga was the mother of Ernest, Michael and Benjamin, grandmother of Daniel, Gideon, Jesse and Giselle, great-grandmother of Leah Ru, and mother-in-law of Kathy Guy, Wenny Ho and Anne Ellsworth.
Charlotte D’Souza, Maria De Santis, Cynthia Moyo and Ryan Hatch provided Helga affectionate and skilled care that enriched her life.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W. on Wednesday, December 31 at 12:00 p.m. Burial at the Shaar Hashomayim Cemetery, 1250 chemin de la Fôret, Outrement. A private shiva will follow at her home. Contributions in her memory may be made to the UNHCR, click here and the New Israel Fund Canada, click here.
