Passed away peacefully on Monday November 3, 2025 at the age of 88. Beloved wife of the late David Jonathan Marshall, with whom she shared 62 loving years. Devoted mother and mother-in-law of Susan Marshall and Brian Kasner, Adele Marshall and Michael Shapiro, and Alan Marshall and Andrea Yampolsky. Adored Grandma of Melanie Kasner and Benjamin Wohl, Danielle Kasner and Andrew Sherman, Max Kasner, Ariel Shapiro and Stephanie Feldman, Janna Shapiro and Mario Corrado, Jessica Marshall, and Harry Marshall. Great-grandmother of Zelda and Ashton Sherman. Cherished sister-in-law of Judith Marshall and the late Willy Olsen.

Lisette was born in the Free City of Danzig (today Gdansk) on the cusp of WWII. After surviving Kristallnacht, when stones thrown through the window landed in her crib, and her father’s business was destroyed, Lisette and her parents ended up in Warsaw. Hidden with her mother, she survived while her father escaped on a motorcycle to Lithuania and managed to get one of the precious visas to Japan from Chiune Sugihara. Somehow reunited, the family travelled by train across Russia and Siberia to Japan, alternately bribing and charming the various soldiers who boarded the trains looking for Jews. Arriving finally in Kobe, they spent six months trying to get visas to either the US or Canada – whoever would take them. Lucky for all of us, they ended up in Montreal.

Life as a German-speaking immigrant was not easy, and Lisette was determined to excel. She was an outstanding student and went on to get a BSc and a Master’s degree in Speech Pathology, unusual in those days. Life changed after a friend fixed her up with David; they were married 8 months later and inseparable for the next 62 years.

Lisette always considered her family to be her greatest achievement, and always talked about how proud she was of what she and David had created. Having grown up without a family, it was more important to her than anything else. Lisette will be missed forever by all those who were lucky enough to have known her.

Many thanks from the family to the team on 6 North at Maimonides for their kindness in looking after our mother, and to her devoted caregivers, Becky, Norma and Myrna without whom she would have suffered so much more these last few months.
