I know that my father, for one, had a very special relationship with him, one that will never be forgotten. They loved each other's company, whether it was snow shoeing, biking, skiing, eating George's Hungarian cooking, or many other activities, they always had a great time together. Dear Phyllis Morty and I were so saddened to hear about George’s passing. We send our sincere condolences to you and your family. We remember George as a kind and caring man. He was so thoughtful when Morty lost a button on his new leather jacket and he asked George if he had another button like it for a replacement. George came by our home picked up the jacket and the next day he brought it back with the new button sewn on. We knew that this was what he was like in all aspects of his life. May all your wonderful memories help you at this most difficult time. May his memory be a blessing. Fondly, Phyllis and Morty

Phyllis, Greg, Kathy, Betty and Family; We first want to extend our deepest sympathies to all of you. George's passing has left a hole in our hearts, as it has with many people, especially of course your own family. George was an exceptional and extraordinary human being, a kind considerate and gentle soul with a great sense of humour. George gave me the opportunity to go into my own business when no one else did. George was certainly an anomaly in the needle trade. He was extremely well liked by both his customers and suppliers and he taught me that it is good to succeed but even better if you are a nice person in the process. Without a second thought, you all treated our family as your own and for that we are eternally grateful. Some of our best memories are from times spent at the lake house and at the stables. Mark, to this day reminds me that when I would not take him out fishing, George (his Godfather) did! Alex's love of horses and other animals came from spending quality time with George. Phyllis, both you and George were incredible role models for Cheryl and I. We were a young married couple with two small children and your love, respect and compassion for each other inspired us. Even when we moved away and returned to Montreal to visit, for us to see all of you was like visiting with our own family. Virtual hugs and kisses!

Dear Phyllis, Kathy, Greg and family, Betty and family It is with the most profound and overwhelming sadness that we offer condolences to your entire family, from ours. We have the very best, and most treasured memories of the time when we were all part of a group of young couples, starting out, building families, futures, enjoying life, and our friendship, and forming a lifetime bond in a way that only the young know how. George continues to live on in our hearts, as we recall his generosity, his unassuming ways, and his quick wit. George Kis wrote the book on how to elevate a ordinary life to the extraordinary, as his children, grandson and Rabbi so eloquently expressed this morning. May his memory always be for a blessing. With much love, Tommy, Julie and our entire family

George Varnai - 6 days ago

Dear Kis family: המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים!! We don’t know each other but I’m grieving with you. George and I met in the summer of ‘57, not long after we both arrived from Hungary. He was in fact the first friend I made in Canada. And then we both went to Baron Byng and our friendship continued. I left Montreal in ‘66 and we lost contact and didn’t reconnect until five years ago. Listening to his children speak at the funeral today I can say with certainty that George has left the best legacy a person can and that is something to be very proud of. Thinking of you!!! May you know no further sorrow George Varnai

Dear Phyllis, Kathy, Greg and family - We are so sorry to hear about your loss. For as long as I can remember, Phyllis and George would attend our many annual family celebrations. Whenever George showed up, I would be eager to strike up a conversation with him. His humorous view of the world, combined with his smile, laugh and of course his accent, was his hallmark and always made me laugh. His presence will be missed, but the lasting memories we all have, will always be remembered.

B'H If someone were to ask, 'Des G-d reside at Maimonides?' I would signal out to them Phyllis attending to George, side by side feeding him, coddling him, reviving him just to get a spark into George's eyes. Day after day, steadily, patiently, devotedly, reverently.. I had never seen such dutiful love . There was holiness in that central area where everyone gatgathered round about Phyllis and George. Then there was lockdown or more correctly lockout; I sought to reassure him. He wated for you, Phyllis, only to honour you. And you came. What strength and G-dly love.

Dear Phyllis, Greg, Cathy and families, All those good wishes and fond memories! Everyone seems to have lots to say about George. One thing about George that was not mentioned is the creative, and self motivated person he was. We had a lot in common, First we were both in the shmata business, where he styled garments, then we both had country houses, then we both had dogs(Kelly) that he took care of so well, and we both had the synagogue to meet and discuss,we both had houses on the same street, and we both loved up north. The way he took handicapped children horseback riding was a real mitzvah, right from the heart. Phyllis we will miss him a lot.
