Herschel Gordon Gavsie, age 78, of Delray Beach, Florida passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
Herschel Gordon Gavsie, known to friends and family as Hershey, passed away in Delray Beach, Florida, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s dementia. He was 78 years old.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, on December 26, 1946, Hershey was the youngest child of Dr. Bill Gavsie, a pioneering pediatrician, and Emily Gavsie, a dedicated teacher. Raised in a household that valued education and service, Hershey grew up alongside his older siblings, Phyllis and Ronnie. As the youngest by several years, Hershey developed a strong sense of independence and resilience.
Hershey’s early years were marked by a search for belonging and self-discovery. He left Montreal at 16 to attend Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he thrived academically and socially. His innate curiosity about people and their stories led him to pursue law at McGill University, returning to his hometown with renewed confidence and ambition.
It was during his law studies that Hershey met Karen Firestone, whom he married in October 1969. Together, they welcomed two sons, Adam and Daniel. Hershey began his legal career in Montreal, but the shifting political climate in Quebec prompted a bold move to South Florida in 1977, where he rebuilt his career and life, earning a second law degree and passing the Florida Bar.
Hershey’s professional journey was one of continual reinvention. He practiced law, managed family businesses, and later returned to legal work, specializing in immigration law. His career took him between Montreal and Florida, always guided by his adaptability, determination, and genuine interest in helping others.
In 2006, Hershey married Susan, gaining a loving partner and, stepdaughter, Lauren, and in-laws Ellen and Murray. Lauren eventually brought Josh into the family and they had two children Dylan and Ethan. Hershey and Susan built a welcoming home in Delray Beach, where Hershey enjoyed years of companionship and community.
As a father and grandfather, Hershey was known for his warmth, generous spirit, and distinctive bear hugs. He cherished family gatherings and took great pride in the accomplishments of his sons, Lauren and Josh and all his grandchildren. Though life brought its share of challenges—including professional setbacks and personal transitions—Hershey faced each with perseverance and optimism.
Hershey’s later years were marked by declining health, but also by the steadfast support of his family, especially his wife Susan, and dedicated caregivers. Even as his memory faded, Hershey’s kindness and affection left a lasting impression on those around him.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; sons, Adam (Hope) and Daniel (Rochel); stepdaughter, Lauren (Josh); grandchildren Maya, Jonah, Chaya, Devorah, Dylan and Ethan; siblings, Phyllis (the late Robert) and Ronnie (Rhonda); and extended family in Canada and the United States.
Hershey’s life was a testament to resilience, reinvention, and the enduring power of family. He will be remembered for his humor, his hugs, and his unwavering pride in his loved ones.
A private memorial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
Rest in peace, Hershey. Your story, your warm heart, and your love will not be forgotten.
A graveside service for Herschel will be held Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo (Kendall), 5900 SW 77th Ave, Miami, FL 33143.
