In Loving Memory of Georgette Cohen-Mekies
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Georgette Cohen-Mekies, on Monday, July 14, 2025, beloved mother of the late Marcelle, Saul (Marcia), Gabriel, Anne, the late Helen, Isabelle (Bill), and Irene. Cherished grandmother of Nicole, Juliete, and Anna; Erika, Adam, and Olivia; Erik, and Jeremy. Proud great-grandmother of three. Georgette was the matriarch of a family spanning five generations and continents.
Born in Algeria, Mrs. Cohen-Mekies lived in Algeria, Morocco, Israel, France, the United States, and ultimately Canada—always striving to provide a better life for her children. A proud Sephardic Jewish woman and mother of seven, she faced many personal tragedies with grace, dignity, and silent strength, always placing her family above herself.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband David, whom she was married to for fifty-one years and lovingly cared for at home during his final illness. Her dedication and loyalty to her family and heritage were hallmarks of her life.
Mrs. Cohen-Mekies continued to inspire those around her with her resilience and inner strength. She was proud of her volunteer work at the Cummings Center, where she had dedicated over two decades of service and was adored by those she touched.
Her Jewish identity was deeply rooted in her spirit. Always celebrating Jewish holidays, she lived her values through kindness, endurance, devotion, and deep love for her family, community, and steadfast support for the Nation of Israel— an embodiment of the Jewish mother in its truest, most soulful form.
She leaves behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and devotion that will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, dear friends, and all who were fortunate to know her.
Graveside service on Wednesday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Ahavath Schulom Congregation Cemetery, de la Savane.
May her memory be a blessing.
