We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Allan Laine Kagedan on October 30, 2025. Beloved husband of Barbara Laine Kagedan, father of Daniel (Heather Poushay) and Elizabeth (James Rathbone), very proud sabah of Ethan, Xavier, Logan, and Dashiell (Dash); predeceased by his father Joseph Kage, mother Miriam, and brother Ian (Shoshana); survived by his brothers Steven (Amy) and Tom (Marcia), and sister-in-law Joanne (Mark), and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Allan studied at the University of Toronto and then received his Ph.D. in history and Russian studies from Columbia University in New York. A scholar by nature, he published two books and many articles. He taught at Columbia, Harvard, McGill and Carleton. He never stopped reading and thinking—in his last weeks, despite his increasing struggles with ALS and inability to speak, he was working on a new project.
He worked for decades in national security and intelligence for the Government of Canada. Upon retirement, he became an investigator with the Office of the Information Commissioner, marrying his knowledge of national security with his commitment to opening up Canadian history to Canadians.
Allan lived in joy. He loved travel (he spoke six languages and understood several more), music, good food and wine, nature, and learning new things. Most of all, he loved his family. He touched so many lives, always with his smile and deep dimples, and quiet intelligence, grace and dignity. Truly he was good to his core. He leaves a hole that can never be filled.
A life well lived. And a life to be celebrated.
Heartfelt thanks to Maribeth Torrejon, the staff and patients of 5 North at Saint Vincent Hospital, and everyone at the ALS Clinic of the Ottawa Hospital.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday November 3, 2025, at the Jewish Memorial Chapel 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa. Interment will follow at Jewish Memorial Gardens, 6549 Herberts Corners Road, Greely.
