It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gabriel (Gaby) Segal on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the age of eighty-five. Devoted husband of Sheila (Richler) Segal. Beloved father and father-in-law of Mona Segal and Brian Strasser, Frank Segal and Stefani Balinsky. Proud grandfather of Aidan Strasser, Spencer Strasser; Allison Segal, and Alexander Segal. Brother and brother-in-law of Joe and the late Ghita Segal; and brother-in-law of Benjamin and the late Carmalit Richler. Son of the late Florence Poznak Segal and the late Ralph Segal. Gaby will be missed by his family, friends, and all those who knew him. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. April Shamy, and her team, Dr. Chang, nurse Bernadine, and Gaby’s angels, Conie, Fe, Luz, Evelyn, Carla and Lovely, for all their care, kindness, dedication, support and friendship.

Gabriel was born in Montreal to two immigrant parents on April 14, 1940. Along with his brother Joe, Gaby was raised to live a life rooted in Jewish values — kindness, generosity, and devotion to family and community.  A Baron Byng alumnus, he refined his customer service skills during his free time working in his father’s food market, which catered to European immigrants, allowing him to learn a little bit of many languages. Gaby married his 'queen' on January 31, 1965, and soon after built his own company: a thriving business in Montreal’s shmata industry. As the industry changed over the decades, Gaby continuously transformed the business to great success. Later on, he built upon his passion of helping people in any which way possible, and launched a service to continue to help newer immigrants acclimatize to living in Canada. He was a larger-than-life character, who brought smiles to everyone as soon as he entered a room. His generosity knew no bounds, reaching out to all communities, even across the world.

Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W., on Sunday, August 24 at 2:00 p.m. Burial at the Young Israel of Montreal Congregation Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. Shiva will be observed at 6800 Macdonald Ave., Côte Saint-Luc from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. daily. Evening services at 7:15 p.m.

Donations in Gaby’s memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, (800) 955-4572 or visit click here, or to any Jewish charity of your choice.

May his memory live on in all the lives he’s touched, both family and friends. If he had one last wish, it would be if everyone he knew performed a simple mitzvah (a good deed) in his honour. May Gaby's memory be a blessing.

Baruch Dayan HaEmet.
