Judith Esther Shapiro, a devoted community organizer, gifted artist, and passionate advocate for social justice, passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the age of 60, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on January 29, 1965, in New York City, Judith brought her vibrant spirit and unwavering commitment to equity with her when she moved to Montreal in 1998. From that moment forward, she became a vital force within the community sector. Her work was marked by a rare combination of analytical brilliance and heartfelt compassion. Colleagues and community members alike were inspired by her leadership and driven by the clarity of her vision for a more just world.
Judith’s professional life was deeply intertwined with her personal values. She cared profoundly about social justice and never hesitated to stand up for what she believed in. Whether marching in demonstrations to protect public healthcare or speaking out against inequities and injustice, Judith was always present—steadfast and unyielding. Her instinct to help others was immediate and sincere; no matter how difficult circumstances became, she consistently put others before herself. As the child of a Holocaust survivor, she grew up aware of the dangers of intolerance, hatred, and marginalization.
Her contributions to the CIUSSS Centre-Ouest were especially impactful. There, she not only led initiatives but also mentored colleagues who admired her dedication and insight. Her legacy within the organization is one of empowerment, empathy, and excellence.
Beyond her professional achievements, Judith was a creative soul whose artistic talents enriched every aspect of her life. She expressed herself through drawing, painting, crochet, and gardening—each medium reflecting her keen eye for beauty and detail. Her garden was often recognized for its splendor; it stood as a living testament to her patience and care.
Judith’s home life was filled with love and devotion. She is survived by her loving husband Kevin Callahan and their devoted son Daniel Shapiro-Callahan. She also leaves behind her caring sister Josine, brother-in-law Andrew Clateman, and their child Hobbes Clateman—all of whom cherished Judith’s warmth, humour, and wisdom.
She was predeceased by her father Eugene Shapiro and mother Leora Guterman-Shapiro.
To those who knew her—family, friends, neighbors, colleagues—Judith was a force of nature: resilient in adversity, generous in spirit, and tireless in pursuit of justice. Her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
May Judith’s memory be a blessing and a guiding light for all who carry forward the causes she held dear. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to support the Open Door shelter for the unhoused, click here; or the Canadian Cancer Society, click here.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at the Cotes-des-Neiges Cemetery 4601 Chem. de la Côte-des-Neiges.
“In sorrow we must go, but not in despair. Behold! we are not bound for ever to the circles of the world, and beyond them is more than memory.”
