CHOBOCKY, Magda (née Sauber)
On Saturday, July 20, 2024. Magda was born in Eget, Hungary on June 15, 1924. Beloved wife of the late Hanus (Hans) Chobocky for over seventy years. Daughter of the late Herman Sauber and the late Estelle Kaff. Magda had a brother nine years older and a sister six years older, who both perished in the Holocaust. Magda’s parents were older when she was born, and, at the age of fourteen, she lost everyone when Hitler’s army marched into Hungary.
Magda and Hans met when she was in her early 20’s, they lived in Israel for many years, went to Paris to await documents to start a new life and immigrated to Montreal in the mid 1950’s. Magda and Hans were very caring for each other. Although different in many ways, they were a good match. Magda never had children but took care of many children at the hospital where she worked in Montreal and at daycare centres. She loved being with children and often approached parents of young ones and made endearing remarks. She lovingly doted upon her friends’ children. It was her one regret – not having any children of her own.
Magda was a very independent person, very active and often called herself "Road Runner” as she was always on the go. Magda insisted on serving coffee and cake upon arrival at her apartment and set a beautiful table. She remembered birthdays and special times.
She would not accept help from anyone and, in her last years, did so reluctantly. She was a force to be reckoned with – petite but mighty. Magda loved to sing and listen to music, she was one we all wanted to visit with, she rarely talked about herself or her past as it was too painful. Chocolate was a favorite of Magda’s, and she often hid it in drawers and got up during the night to have some. Magda’s caregivers knew of her love of chocolate and often provided her with her favorites.
Sincere gratitude to Magda’s wonderful caregivers, Lani and Marcy, as they made each day count with sincere compassion. Special thanks to the staff of King David Residence and of the Jewish Eldercare Centre. Magda will be remembered by her friends, Joseph Braun, Evelyn Ammar, Jane Shadley, Helga Kohler and Bobby Kleinman, who all helped in ensuring she was cared for in her final years.
