It is with great sadness that Maurice’s family announces his passing after a long illness on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the age of seventy-nine. Son of the late Michel and the late Edith Elia. Devoted husband of Ulli for fifty years. Maurice will be sadly missed by his sons, Olivier and Julien of whom he was very proud; daughters-in-law Caroline and Jillian, as well as grandsons Louis and Maxime. Loving brother-in-law of Trudy and Wayne, Madi and the late Kurt, and the late Karl. Beloved uncle of Karin, Ingrid, Geoff, Malinda, Derek and their families. Dear cousin of Gabrielle Elia (the late David Tawfik) and their daughters Jessica, Vivianne, Andrea and their families. He will also be missed by his cousins in England, Claudie (Paul), James, Roger and their families, as well as extended family in Israel.
Maurice was a French teacher at Dawson College for twenty-nine years, worked for fifteen summers at the Montreal World Film Festival, and wrote several novels. A sensitive and caring man, he was passionate about literature, the French language, movies, and travelling with his family. He will be deeply missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him.
Our heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and personal support workers at Mount Sinai Hospital and Maimonides Geriatric Centre. Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, August 15 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Baron de Hirsch Community Foundation Cemetery Section B24, de la Savane.
