Holocaust Survivor

Peacefully, in Montreal, on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Beloved husband of Tina, whose love, support and strength helped him accomplish so much in his later years, and the late Helen Smart. Kind and devoted father and father-in-law of Faith Segal, Lorne Smart and Sharon Pearl, Anthony Katsoudas and Krystina Caponi. Proud Zaidie of Tara, the late Jay, Brandon and Emily, Adam, Luka, and Leo. Predeceased by his parents, his little sister and sixty-two other members of his family, who tragically perished in the Holocaust. Dear brother-in-law of Angelo and Nina, Mary and the late Tony, and Frank Russo. Max will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He arrived in Canada with nothing and went on to build a remarkable life—a loving family, a successful career as a real estate developer, and recognition as an author, artist, and media personality. His acclaimed book, The Boy in the Woods, inspired a full-length documentary on the HISTORY Channel and a feature film shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. His story, larger-than-life personality, and boundless energy captivated audiences, leading to countless interviews and articles.

Funeral service from Paperman and Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W., on Friday, October 30, at 2:30 p.m. Burial at the Shomrim Laboker Congregation Cemetery, de la Savane. Private shiva at his home. His difficult childhood and his accomplishments late in life are an inspiration to all of us not to dwell on the past but to fully embrace the future.
