Penny Fine was an amazing woman. She died of complications following recent major surgery.
She leaves her devoted husband Hugh Furneaux with whom she shared a loving and special relationship for more than 50 years. As one of the best mothers ever, she died on Mother's Day, leaving her dearly loved daughters Adrienne Fine-Furneaux (with Brian Radnoff) and Arielle Furneaux (with Chris Bolton). Penny leaves behind her beloved sister Wendy Fine (with Harry Shizgal). She will also be missed as grandmother, grandma and gamma by her wonderful grandchildren Noah, Leo and Kaya. As part of her extended family, John and Nick Furneaux also share the grief.
Penny was filled with curiosity, energy and vibrancy. She was stimulating to be with and lit up the lives of so many people. Her working life included a decade in textbook publishing. In the 1970s, she was responsible for developing and editing the first successful textbook about the changing face of Canada's growing multiculturalism. A favourite part of her career in the 1990s was being a program producer at TVO. As well, she worked as a curriculum consultant for the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Penny was passionate about making connections between people and building strong communities. She had a creative mind and a wide variety of interests that included history, travel, literature, and theatre. She was a devoted friend and attracted people to her with a warmth and generosity of spirit. More recently, Penny's many achievements included developing and producing successful programs for the Israel Engagement Committee at City Shul. Unfortunately, developments in Israel over the past couple of years made her very sad and discouraged about the country she was so passionate about. Penny was born in Montreal, the beloved daughter of Jean and Moe Fine. Services will be at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel at 2401 Steeles Avenue West at 9:30 am Tuesday May 13. Shiva will be at 903-55 Prince Arthur Avenue 1-5pm and 7-9pm, beginning on May 13th and continuing until May 15. Donations may be made in Penny's memory to the JCC Toronto or City Shul.
