February 5, 1944 – November 11, 2025

Peacefully in the early morning of Tuesday, November 11, 2025, (20 Heshvan) surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of Gitel Elkin. Devoted father and father-in-law of Shalom-Zion Elkin and Susana Taylor, Abbie and Steven Samuels. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Irene and Stephen Lipper, JJ and Barbara Elkin, Brahm and Marilyn Elkin. “Saba” will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his cherished grandchildren Zachary and Jaydon Elkin; Leba and Maya Samuels; and by his nieces and nephews Gregory, Andrea, and David Lipper; Jon, Chantal, and Daniel Elkin; Lisa, Rosetta-Sarah, Joshua, and Jeremy Elkin and their families.

Born in Montreal on February 5, 1944, Rabbi Elkin pursued a life devoted to faith, education, and community. After high school, he traveled to London, England to begin his rabbinical studies, and later continued his education in Israel for two years. He graduated from Yeshiva University and completed postgraduate studies at the Staten Island Yeshiva.

He began his teaching career at the Hebrew Academy of Seattle, where he also earned a master’s degree in education and counseling from Seattle Pacific University. Returning to Montreal, he served as Vice Principal of the Hebrew Academy’s elementary school, later teaching Judaic Studies at Akiva School. He went on to become the Educational Director of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim and served as a chaplain at four Montreal hospitals. Rabbi Elkin also led services for residents at King David and Montefiore senior homes.

From 1997 to 2012, he was the Rabbi of Beth Israel Synagogue in Kingston, Ontario, where he became a beloved spiritual leader and mentor.

Rabbi Elkin was a passionate activist and humanitarian. He advocated tirelessly for Soviet Jewry, raised funds to support Ethiopian youth in Israel, and championed both Jewish and non-Jewish causes with compassion and dedication.

Funeral service from Paperman and Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Wednesday, November 12 at 2:00 p.m. Burial at the Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem Congregation cemetery, de la Savane.
