Peacefully, at the age of ninety-two on Friday, March 20, 2026, in Ottawa, surrounded by her loving family and devoted caregivers. She also leaves behind three great-grandchildren: Romy, Nora, and Lyla. Cookie is survived by her sister, Esther Backman, and her sisters-in-law, Sharon Herlich and Molly Herlich, and her brother-in-law Stephen Maron. She cherished—and was adored by—twenty-two nieces, nephews, and their families. Predeceased by her parents, Lilly and Harry Herlich; her siblings, Ruth Sherman, Samuel Herlich, Israel (Tully) Herlich, Faygie and Syd Sandys; her niece Sandy Litwin; and by her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Murray Backman, Beverley and Stanley Horwitz, and Elayne and Teddy Gold; and by Harvey, Louie, and Reggie Maron. Cookie will be missed by George Gaty, by her family, friends, and by all who knew her.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Lilia, Mila, and Evelyn for their exceptional care, love, and devotion. Thanks as well to Rhonda, Claire, and Andrea in Montreal for their wonderful support. Much appreciation to the 5th floor and concierge staff at Amica The Glebe, as well as the Carefor palliative care providers.

Cookie was born in Montreal, Quebec, on June 1, 1933. A true entrepreneur, she owned and operated three businesses during her lifetime. She was the epitome of elegance, grace, and kindness.
