Yvonne Hazan Totah (née Sasson)

Yvonne passed away peacefully on August 21st, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

Beloved wife of the late Jacques Hazan Totah. Treasured mother of Maurice, Rina, and Claudy. Mother-in-law of Melda Cermi and Howard Novick. Cherished grandmother of David, and Sasha Alcoloumbre, Jacob, and Justin Novick, Sarah, and Jack Hazan. Sister of Selim, and Odette Sasson, as well as the late Stella, Fortunée, Shella, and Frida Sasson. Sister in law of Andrée Sasson and of the late Elie Hazan, Fortunée Dana, Bahia Lisbona, Lucie Halabi and Joe Hazan. She will be lovingly remembered by all her nieces and nephews, her extended family and many dear friends.

After many years of working as a teacher in Lebanon, Yvonne and her family moved to Canada in 1972. At age 40, she went back to school in order to teach French and Math in elementary school while raising 3 young children and working as a substitute teacher. She taught in several schools and impacted the lives of hundreds of children with her playful approach, warmth and benevolence through a career that spanned over 40 years.

She will be remembered for her deep and unwavering love for her family and close friends, outstanding Jewish Lebanese cooking, boundless generosity, and sharp wit. 

She especially cherished gathering family and friends around her dinner table. She single-handedly hosted Shabbat dinners every week, keeping the family united until the very end. 

Special thanks to her family doctor, Dr. Lynn Cohen, for her extraordinary care and to the staff at the Jewish General Hospital for the quality of their care throughout her many admissions.

The family is grateful to Nicky, Faye, Aisha and Nenita for taking such good care of her over the past couple years.

Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, August 23rd  at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Beth-El Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva at her home.  Donations in Yvonne’s memory can be made to the Jewish General Hospital at the following link (click here).

Yvonne s’est éteinte paisiblement le 21 août, entourée de ses enfants et petits-enfants.

Épouse bien-aimée de feu Jacques Hazan Totah. Mère dévouée de Maurice, Rina et Claudy. Chère belle-mère de Melda Cermi et de Howard Novick. Grand-mère adorée de David et Sasha Alcoloumbre, Jacob et Justin Novick, Sarah et Jack Hazan. Sœur de Selim et d’Odette Sasson, et de feu Stella, Fortunée, Shella et Frida Sasson. Belle sœur d’Andrée Sasson et de feu Elie Hazan, Fortunée Dana, Bahia Lisbona, Lucie Halabi et Joe Hazan. Elle laisse également dans le deuil tous ses neveux et nièces, sa famille élargie ainsi que de nombreux amis très chers.

Yvonne et sa famille se sont installées au Canada en 1972, après avoir travaillé pendant de nombreuses années comme enseignante au Liban. À l’âge de 40 ans, elle a repris ses études afin d’enseigner le français et les mathématiques à l’école primaire, tout en élevant ses trois jeunes enfants et en travaillant comme remplaçante. Au cours de sa carrière de plus de 40 ans, elle a enseigné dans plusieurs écoles et a marqué la vie de centaines d’enfants par son approche ludique, sa chaleur et sa bienveillance.

On se souviendra d’elle pour son amour profond et inébranlable pour sa famille et ses amis proches, sa cuisine judéo-libanaise exceptionnelle, sa générosité sans limite et son esprit vif.

Elle aimait tout particulièrement réunir sa famille et ses amis autour de sa table. Elle organisait seule les dîners de shabbat chaque semaine, maintenant ainsi le lien familial jusqu’à la toute fin.

La famille tient à remercier son médecin de famille, Dre Lynn Cohen, pour ses soins extraordinaires et le personnel de l’Hôpital Général Juif pour la qualité de leurs soins durant ses nombreuses admissions. 

Le famille est reconnaissante envers Nicky, Faye, Aisha et Nenita pour nous avoir aidé à prendre soin d’elle ces quelques dernières années.

Les funérailles auront lieu le dimanche 23 août à 11 h chez Paperman et fils : 3888 rue Jean-Talon Ouest. L’inhumation suivra à la section Beth-El du cimetière Eternal Gardens, à Beaconsfield.
