May 6, 1953-February 4, 2025

We are devastated to announce the passing of our matriarch and North Star, Joan Simand.

Beloved mother and mother-in-law of Leah and Matthew, Jacob and Ann, and Ben and Emma. Adored “mamama” of Zac, and Zoe Zeitz, “gigi” of Loretta, and Leland Saltiel. Predeceased by her cherished parents Mel and Leila. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Bernie, Carol and Peter Seidman, and Anita. Proud aunt of Shaina and Justin, Rachael and Matt, Troy and Josh, Sarena.

A relentless adventurer and trailblazer, she was always on the pursuit of the next challenge. She loved fitness, the arts, travel, and giving back. She was passionate about her career in social work, and with every retirement would immediately start a new chapter to continue advocating and contributing wherever she could. Last spring, she volunteered for Sar-El and was eager to return to Israel and the mission.

Her wit, keen, analytical mind, and joie de vivre were unparalleled. She was everyone’s favourite person for an intellectual or ethical debate, deeply personal conversation over a delicious homemade meal, or a light conversation in dry humour paired with downright goofiness. She delighted in her family and friends, we all delighted in and were enchanted by her. We are grateful for the tremendous care of the first responders, the wonderful Emergency Room team at the Glen, and for the outpouring of support.
