It is with profound sadness and immense love that we announce the passing of Henry Ruttner, a remarkable man who lived an extraordinary life filled with resilience, laughter, love, and unforgettable stories.
Born on May 5, 1929, in Czechoslovakia, Henry survived the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust. His strength, determination, and extraordinary resilience carried him through life's greatest challenges. He went on to build a wonderful life in Montreal, where he established himself in the jewellery industry. But of all his accomplishments, nothing made him prouder than his family.
Henry was truly one of a kind. Charming, generous, incredibly funny, and tough as nails, he had a larger-than-life personality. He was a gifted storyteller who could captivate a room, often leaving everyone laughing. His wonderful sense of humour, his kindness, his love of music, and his ability to find joy in life made him unforgettable to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
One of Henry's favourite stories was about meeting the love of his life, Sheila Ruttner, at a party. As he often told his family, the moment he saw her, he thought, "I'm going to marry this girl." And he did. Together, they built a beautiful family and a lifetime of memories. Sheila remained an important and cherished part of his life's story.
Later in life, Henry was fortunate to find companionship and love once again with Esther Matin. They met when they were both 88 years old and shared ten wonderful years together, proving that love, laughter, and companionship have no age limit.
Henry was the proud and loving father of Jeffrey (Dana), Larry, Elissa, and Shoshana (Martin), and the cherished grandfather of Dylan, Damian, Ashira, Juliet, Yisrael Zev, and Ethan. He also leaves behind many extended family members and loved ones whose lives he touched.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Jewish General Hospital. A very special thank you to Dr. Joe Raffoul, who has been an extraordinary advocate, source of guidance, and unwavering support to Henry and his family for the past 16 years.
Our deepest appreciation also goes to his devoted caregivers, Lani, Raquel, Barbera, and Grace, as well as the many wonderful caregivers who came before them. Their compassion, patience, and dedication brought Henry comfort, dignity, and loving care.
Henry's life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit. He endured what few could imagine, yet never lost his humour, his generosity, his love of music, or his ability to make people smile.
He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, countless memories, and a legacy of love and resilience that will live on through the generations.
