It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Zara Gurstein, on January 26, at the remarkable age of 109, with her children by her side. Zara was the wife of the late Morris Gurstein; devoted mother of Mimi Goldenberg Bercovitch and Matthew Gurstein; cherished mother-in-law of the late Marvin Goldenberg and the late Danny Bercovitch; loving grandmother of Francine Goldenberg (Gary Glassman), Mark Goldenberg (Marla Karpman), and Lara Goldenberg; and proud great-grandmother of Kimberly, Scott, Evan, Jillian, and Isaac. Sister of the late Naomi Lyman and Gertrude Wippman.
Born on July 26, 1916, Zara lived a remarkable life spanning more than a century. Together with her husband Morris, she ran Gurstein Furs with great pride, which they established as a well-known fixture in Saskatoon. Remembered for her vibrant personality and unmistakable energy, Zara was a well-known and respected personality in her community and her synagogue, where her dedication, presence, and impact can still be felt.
Zara's remarkable health and determination allowed her to live independently for over a century. She often credited her longevity to her stretching exercises every morning and her glass of sherry every evening. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff and caregivers who helped ensure Zara's final years were comfortable.
She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
May her memory be for a blessing.
The Funeral Service will take place at the Jewish Community Centre in Saskatoon on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 11:00 am followed by burial at the Agudas Israel Cemetery and a Meal of Condolence at the Edwards Family Centre.
