Esther—known to many of us as Tata, Tity or Titine—passed away peacefully on Friday, June 20th, in Florida. She was so many things to so many people: a devoted sister, a loving aunt, a true friend, and even a grandma to some.
Sister to Marc z’l, Gad z’l, Jules z’l, and Sidney z’l, Esther is survived by her sisters Suzanne Abitbol and Simone Cohen and her brother Jacques and many loving nieces and nephews!
Esther’s love for her family was fierce and unconditional. She never missed a family gathering, no matter how big or small, and always found a way to stay connected with family throughout the world. Whether it was a joyful celebration or a difficult time, Esther was there—with a pot of soup, a Moroccan dish, stories about life and family in Morocco or just to listen to what was happening in your life.
She had a way of making everyone feel welcome, and her home was always open. Her generosity, her love of food, and her big-hearted nature drew people in. And if you ever found yourself in a conversation with her, you’d quickly discover her passion for politics and her sharp, lively spirit.
Esther came to the U.S. from Morocco as a young woman, mastering the English language and building a life and a career at the United Nations, where she formed friendships from people of all nationalities that lasted a lifetime. She started in the payroll department and moved to the Executive office of the Department of Conference Services preparing and supporting staff on official missions. She retired in 1992 and moved to Hallandale, Florida where she spent the rest of her days.
Even as her health declined in recent years, her strength and warmth continued to inspire those around her. She endeared herself to the people taking care of her.
We will miss Esther “fiercely “, but we hold close the many memories we shared with her; her laughter and her intense love for all of us- a love that we never doubted. She will always be in our hearts.
A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. at the Baron de Hirsch Community Foundation Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva private.
